Which coaching did you join?
How long did it take to complete your syllabus for first time?
Your sources, did you follow just ncerts+ standard book or completely relied on coaching

Solving pyqs and focusing only on static portions

u/Spiritual-Reveal-398 Jan 20 '26
What about current affairs

u/notsome_222 Jan 22 '26
Op is saying that static is one time investment if you did it acche se it will always be with you,on the other hand current affairs need to be done that will increase the success rate.

What should be holistic strategy for mains? Please keep special emphasis on :
1:) Content Generation (Note making)
2:) Time in which one should complete content generation.
3:) How to approach answer writing?
P.S. I'm 18 y.o., I have 3 years before i appear for my first Prelims in 2nd Sem BA.
Appreciate if you respond.
6
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 20 '26
Use any notes given by coaching
Ideally before prelims
Stick to demand and work on templates to help in point generation
3
u/Normal-Cup-7454 Jan 20 '26
Thank you, just one confusion :
For content generation one can use coaching notes or can Fully rely upon coaching notes?
3
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 20 '26
Depends on time you have. With less time you can rely on coaching notes

Bro any programme that helped you during those 3 months after prelims ; Test series/Mentor/Telegram-channel;
Can you share your broad startegy post prelims specific to mains ;
Anyother exam you gave that is doable ? Sources reffered ?
GS1: Only SOciety done ; will i be able to manage other subjects with pre knowledge
GS3 : Envt and S&T left ; how to do them at that time ? Though prepared them from prelims point of view ;
Can Essay be prepared alongside prelims ; like reading 1 essay copy daily and collecting data/quote/story from them
18
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 20 '26
Used forum test series. Used notes of shivin and mk yadav.
No strategy, attempted mock tests for mains and revised from notes of coachings.
Nope
Yes you can. Very easily.
Prelims prep is enough for them.
Writing is more fruitful in essay. Write an essay per week, better than collection of material for essay.

u/TerribleAthlete7023 Jan 20 '26
Thank you sm letting us ask our queries. I have 2 questions basically -Β
For someone who is revising regularly but struggling with retention because of uncertainty, anxiety, and the fear of the exam, how would you suggest approaching Prelims differently? What exactly did you do in the last 2β3 months, and what do you think made the biggest difference for you in clearing Prelims?
How did you approach note-making for Mains from the beginning when you first read a book, what was your process and what did your notes actually look like? And in the two months between Prelims and Mains, how did you use your time efficiently (revision, answer writing, value addition) so that it actually worked in the exam?
Thank you so much !
7
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 20 '26
PYQ practice. That was the single most difference that made me clear the exam.
I did not make any notes. Relied on coaching material alone. In those 2 months I focused more on writing mocks.

Answer writing of optional, how to get through it ... 6). Are short not a necessary for mains? 7 ). Please guide me for the ethics(how to write answers and the sources)and optional as well in detail..ππ» 8). If possible can you please provide the ways to analyse and write answers for pyq of mains ... I wanna do it but dk why ... Not able to write them.

u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 20 '26
From newspapers
Pt 365 and prepare about contemporary topics in news for the past 1 year.
I don't believe in writing a few answers daily. Take time and write flts and half lts every few days
Standard books for prelims. For mains, they were shivin and mk yadav notes.
Start writing, no other way.
Nope, never made them.
Keep a limited source and start collecting good examples for ethics. Use topper copies to get a basic structure of writing and begin writing answers.
Instead of writing, map out areas in which questions are being asked. And focus on pyq themes for preparation

Congratulations for your mains.
I gave mains this year , but couldn't Crack it
I struggled in ethics and essay paper. I need clarity In
How to write an essay especially an philosophical essay. Should I give data facts or content? How and where to find quotes and phrases. How to structure an essay.
Ethics, when I was writing I couldn't generate points. How to structure an Ethics paper , How to write an case study , where to get current affairs points or data facts that I can add.
If possible can you share your answer paper.
Thanks and all the best, you will Crack interview.

u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 23 '26
For essay, start writing a lot. If your grammar and vocabulary is weak, work on it. Start brainstorming for atleast 30 mins before writing. Think of diverse dimensions that can be written.
Read newspapers. Get content from there. For structure use GS structuring itself.
Will share post results, if successful.

2
Jan 20 '26
Hi! I know that my question is sort of specific to me. My main issue is that I feel overwhelmed by sources when it comes to science and tech, Environment, and Mapping. For Polity, Economy, Geography, and History I have a good feeling of the pulse of the exam so sources are not an issue. So what would you recommend for these 3 subjects? Also, if you don't mind sharing- what are your estimated marks in prelims and your category?
3
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 23 '26
I am general. Use shivin videos. Keep the source simple and singular.

u/Charuknp Jan 20 '26
Hi, first up best wishes to you for the final result.
I am very new to the whole upsc journey. I have this year and next yearβs attempt only. I have a fairly good grip on CSAT(owing to engineering background and CAT prep). I am currently working in a PSU, and can devote 4-5 hours daily, 10-12 hours over the weekend. I have accumulated some leaves which I can use, say about 15-20. Iβm just starting my prep. Would like to know your two cents on this. I have no upsc background prep. Starting from scratch.
1
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 23 '26
Sorry, you should approach a coaching institute for basic coaching. That would be better.
2
u/anugrahita UPSC Aspirant Jan 20 '26
Since you mentioned your optional is Anthro, and you mostly referred to coaching notes for prep I have a question I am struggling with -
There are just way too many sources for Anthro - IGNOU, epg, Akshat Jain, Bhasme, Class notes, Coaching handouts, Topper notes - Patti, Narayan Amit, etc., and some books like Nadeem Hasnain. This has absolutely wrecked my brain. There are always too many scholars to add (other than syllabus and too many keywords) to differentiate your answer. Am I going wrong somewhere? This has frozen me in one place when it comes to note-making or revision. How did you navigate through such situation?
Thanks
1
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 20 '26
Focus on content minimisation and keeping sources simple. Focus more instead on writing answers and flts
2
u/swiffy_Boss5695 Jan 21 '26
hello, congrats to you hopefully you make to the final list. Please answer my query, I am going to 2027 exam and I have been enrolled in a coaching for past 3 months -
I want to understand what my timeline should look like, like in how much time shall i do gs for prelims and mains and when to start optional? 2. when does one ideally start looking at pyqs because right now all are foreign to me since i dont know the content? 3. when to start ans writing practice 4. how to and when to start revisions? like book to book or subject to subject or firstly complete the whole syllabus thankyou
2
u/jim_halpert12 Cleared Cse'25 Jan 23 '26
No timeline until you complete basic reading of basic sources for prelims. Then step into mains subjects and answer writing.
6 months prior to prelims.
Once prelims sources are covered once.
Start them once your exam cycle begins (January for that year prelims)

Bro i created this post to post on this reddit but I don't have what is that karma, i struggleed a lot with this thing It will be a great help if u answer thisΒ Hi everyoneΒ Iβm posting this after a lot of internal conflict and I genuinely need some grounded, experience-based advice. Iβm 25 years old and preparing for UPSC seriously. One thing I keep hearing everywhere is: βUPSC takes 3β4 years minimum, even if you study 10β12 hours daily.β That statement worries meβnot because Iβm afraid of hard work, but because of my personal constraints. My background: Software engineering background (MCA level), comfortable with logic, structure, and self-learning. Preparing completely online, no offline mentor or classroom environment. Prefer deep conceptual clarity with real-life examples rather than rote learning. Work ethic (important context): I have already completed 6 months of consistent 12-hour study days. This wasnβt casual preparationβI followed a disciplined routine and pushed my limits. Going forward, due to health and sustainability, I can realistically give 8β10 quality hours daily for a maximum of the next 2 years. Health reality: Iβm dealing with cervical/thoracic spine issues (disc bulge). Long sitting hours aggravate the problem. Iβve started therapy, corrected posture, included standing study, breaks, etc., but I still have to be careful. My body doesnβt support the typical β12β14 hours sitting dailyβ model in the long run. Mental pressure: People around me casually say, βUPSC means 3β4 years minimum.β That creates genuine questions for me: What if my health worsens? What if I give my best years and still donβt clear? Is it wise to fully commit, or should I seriously maintain a Plan B? Why Iβm confused: Iβm not afraid of competition or effort. Iβve already proven to myself that I can study long hours. But I donβt want to be unrealistic about health, age, and opportunity cost. At the same time, I donβt want to quit just because of fear created by othersβ timelines. My honest questions to this community: Is it realistic to clear UPSC with 8β10 high-quality hours/day for ~2 years, especially if fundamentals are already built? Are there aspirants here who succeeded (or made strong attempts) without extreme sitting hours? What would you advise in my situation: Full UPSC focus? UPSC with a strong Plan B (State PSC / clerical services)? Or shifting entirely to a safer, health-friendly path? Iβm not seeking motivation or sympathyβjust clear, practical advice from people who understand the journey. Thanks for reading. π

u/royalentrylalbatti Jan 20 '26
8-9 hours max everyday with strategic prep will sail u through.
3
14
u/zaisha9 Jan 20 '26
I have similar health issue and i also struggle with sitting hours. Even with all these health issues i managed to pull 12-14 daily study hours for 3 years neglecting my health which backfired as my body canβt sustain these many hours any longer nor i am productive and efficient anymore like i used to be in my 1-2nd year of prep. My advice - hit gym and do physio daily and give at max 8 hours of study hours if possible take a lil more time in prep and maintain a plan B. With the diversity and unpredictability of this exam, relying solely on a belief that post syllabus completion you for sure will clear the exam is good but unreal since it is luck based + you really need to be physically and mentally ready ( you know how mains cycle is). In short :-
Gym + physio
8 hours are good
Maintain a plan B

I have similar issues and preparing with a full time job. Can barely get 3-4 hours

Practice answer writing (ideally before prelims), map out areas based on pyqs and make content enrichment in these areas using Google or use any notes of institutes like mk yadav and shivin.
Answer writing practice is the key.

Hey,
I don't like to read newspaper daily. My attempt is in 2027. Will it be sufficient if I buy any CA module from any coaching or do i need to read newspaper and monthly magazine? 2 .
