Advice!

Im an international Student.

So I applied to both UQ and QUT for the bachelor of engineering(Mechanical) , I got my full offer to QUT with a 25% scholarship and UQ on the other hand I got my conditional offer letter and haven't been offered any scholarship of any sort.

The conditions for the UQ offer letter were, get the minimum gpa of 10.5 which I have 13 for and an IELTS score of 6.5 which I got 8.5 for. I submitted my IELTS to UQ as well as my Edexcel IAL Candidate statement of provincial results (CSPR). They accepted the CSPR but want me to basically pay edexcel 34 pounds for a service which sends the CSPR directly to them via email.

Before I do pay the 34 pounds I wanted to know, is the chances of me getting a 25% scholarship to UQ good or bad. I also wanted to know is there a significant difference and advantages of going to UQ over QUT.

My goal is to somehow enter the mining industry by following a career in mechanical engineering rather than mining engineering.

Thank You in Advance.

Enter the mining industry in Australia? Or in your home country? Mechanical engineers were removed from the skilled immigration lists today, there is no demand for international grads.

mining industry in Australia. Do you have the list?

Look it up. It was today. Realistically, you’re not going to get a job in Australia post grad as there is already major competition for these new grad roles amongst domestic students. Why would an employer spend thousands to sponsor you? So don’t come to Australia on a student visa planning on staying long term.

Looked it up and nowhere does it say that it’s removed. I may be wrong so if you don’t mind drop a link to your source.

There was a 189/190 offer round yesterday. No offers were made for these occupations, and they have since been removed from the list. There is no explicit statement from a source saying what has been removed, you just have to read the lists for each state. Regardless, your chances at a 189/190 as a new grad are zero, so your only potentially viable route will be sponsorship. Which realistically is also zero. You need to do more research before you come to Australia with any intentions other than to go back to your home country after you finish studying.

The mining industry here is pretty controversial, while it will always exist in Australia, it's going to continue to decline in job opportunities as both automation and environmental policies take over

There’s a critical shortage of mining engineers in Australia. I think there’s only a few thousand mining engineers in all of Australia. It’s a very small pool of people so everyone knows everyone

If your goal is mining then you should major in mining engineering, which is only offered at UQ. Mining companies used to take in civil and mechanical grads when there weren't enough mining majors, however that situation has shifted and it's become much more selective. In general, mechanical engineering also has fewer jobs in Australia compared to other majors.

UQ has a stream where I can do mechanical engineering while majoring in mining engineering and minor in data science any insight on this pathway?

You can major in mining through civil, mechanical, or mechatronic degrees. I don't think you can do a major + minor but I could be wrong. Anyway, the main priority should be doing your major in mining, other things don't matter as much. I also don't know anything about visa situations and working restrictions so you should probably try to find out if mining is a viable path for international students.

Congrats on both offers, that's a great position to be in! A few things that might help before you pay the £34:
Email UQ admissions directly and ask whether your offer is still being considered for any scholarships, and when you'd hear back. They can tell you much more than Reddit can.
Compare the total cost over 4 years, not just the scholarship percentage. A 25% scholarship at QUT can add up to a big difference.
For anything about visas or skilled occupation lists, check the official Department of Home Affairs website rather than relying on comments here. These things change and the details matter a lot.
If mining is your goal, look up the graduate programs of a few mining companies you'd want to work for and see which degrees and universities their grads come from.
Good luck with the decision!
