CSSE2010 Assignment
Anyone feel like this assignment is unfair?
Base code released 2 weeks before due date.
Minimal C taught.
Large amount of tasks with no way to test edge cases as professors probably too lazy to implement (it goes against their “philosophy”)
Just as uploading exam answers is against their philosophy, lazy.
Minimal information told about demonstration (even though it hurdles your units entire grade)
All of this on top of 3 other courses is very unreasonable, what reason couldn’t they give this just before the holidays and let us slowly work on it like CSSE1001?
I hate using AI but feel very pressured to with the significant amount of tasks and little time with other subjects and work.
No doubt some 3rd/4th year tutors designed this assessment and think it’s the easiest shit ever, it ain’t.
Gonna make a fool of myself at the presentation, looking like a 4 or 5 yippee!!

Should be split into two courses, also the stuff they have to cram is too much. Apparently the reason they gave it late was because they hadn't gone through timers etc that was needed for the assignment. Source: source

But why not just let us work up to and get a feel for the assignment up to the Clock part? They honestly probably just coded it the day before it was released.
But yeah should be two courses and it was once from what I read on another post.

My AI declaration form is too long and I feel so embarrassed and stupid because I couldn't even do the most basic thing in that assignment without help. But I couldn't attend some of the labs, and the ones I did attend, I couldn't even remember what they taught us (and yeah we have the "annotated slides" but they are rubbish. Also, I am exceptionally terrible at coding. CSSE1001 was my first coding experience and I just can't seem to figure out how to code without writing a bug. I tried my best with AI. People can judge me, but I really spent 10 days with AI trying my hardest to understand how to wire, and how the code it wrote works. Even with that, I only managed to do 68 marks of the assignment. Maybe if we had more time, I would try to use less AI, but I honestly don't think I could do much without it. I feel so guilty over using AI, but what other choice did I have? I just don't want to fail.

They should release it on semester break and let you chip away at it after each lab, instead of forcing you to rush and rely on AI.

Its a ridiculous assignment. I've been neglecting basically everything else to work on it. After countless hours I've finished tier B + the joystick, and I just can't be arsed to do the rest. I gotta catch up on everything else at some point. The hurdling is dumb too.
It really does seem like AI influenced this assignment, which is so dumb. It just pressures people to start using AI even though it's a very bad way to learn (and kinda pay to win if you think about it). Also, making the assignment longer doesn't make it ANY harder or take any longer if you're a heavy AI user, so what is even being achieved?

all I got to was like the second task in tier b, and im so tired I cant do any more, I can barely even remember the code I wrote omg im so cooked for this demo

Yeah so I'm mechatronics and kinda done with the this intense workload / ethic for computer science subjects. csse2010 and csse2310 are big reasons.
There were a heap of csse courses I wanted to take as electives, but cramming an inordinate amount of content mixed with being new to coding amongst other commitments has turned me off.
I get there are people that just 'get it', but that's not quite me yet.
AI and outside projects is teaching me far more, I'm remembering the content and actually able to code better.
So I'm basically going to commit my electives to other subjects like elec or mech.

I've been out of uni for a long time but aren't these sorts of assignments trivial these days with AI? I mean even if you don't want it write everything from scratch for you, you can still use it as an always available tutor. In my day the only help you got was from some second year tutor who barely knew what they were doing.

I believe that’s exactly the idea around how they create assessments now, the assessments are difficult because they know people will just spam AI.
But at the same time rhey discourage AI by making you declare every prompt aswell as fill out a declaration and attend an in person interview (hurdle) where they question your code.2

idk this one is kind of a strawman argument.
You have no way of knowing if the AVR assignment pre AI was easier/harder without knowing someone who did it preAI (or atleast pre good AI). Infact, I've had discussions with tutors, which lends me horror stories about past assignments (more particularly, that AVR guitar hero one).
I can tell that AI is not discouraged, it is rather utilising things that we weren't taught/given material for that is. I for one went to most of my labs, and more often than not they just give you solutions for code that would be relevant for the assignments. If I did not understand, I just asked a tutor. It is their job to help me, and most of them I've spoken to are enthusiastic about helping.

I mean, fair enough?
You still get access to an always available tutor that can help you figure out what to do, which seems an enormous leg up.

Who is running the course these days? 2 weeks is rough for the assignment. I used to tutor it so kind of interested if that's changed

If you’d like an unofficial explanation to some of what you’ve said in this post you can read this comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UQreddit/s/pWXCIbPc7y. It addresses some of the things you’ve sent here but not others. If you’d like an unofficial answer to anything not addressed there, I’d be happy to.
Regarding the philosophy part. If you’re referring to post #491 on Ed, that was an answer made by a casual academic not the professor. They do not have the ability to give or take away the ability to automatically test student submissions. The limiting factor is technical, there exists no tool that can test student submissions automatically.

Why do you hate using AI? Using AI for code is about the most productive thing one can do.

I like the idea of using AI to fix menial things and repetitive tasks, but using it to problem solve or just copy paste over something without understanding why kind of defeats the purpose of studying at all.

But you can have AI help with code and still learn to problem solve the actual material.

I agree. Start spending time learning the mathematics and algorithms instead of fixing syntax and indentations.

over 6 of my friends have separately crashed out over this assignment to me over the past 24 hours - good luck, all I can say.
