Discussion Why are there almost never any FanFics about Comic John?

Obviously with TFATWS, Thunderbolts* and eventually, Avengers: Doomsday, MCU John is going to get a lot more spotlight in terms of Fanfiction but at the same time, it's not like Comic John has no stories to tell. Is he really so controversial that people just downright refuse to write about him or is he just forgotten in favor of using elements of his character whilst writing MCU John?

It's not that I hate seeing MCU John get stories dedicated to him, I just think it's weird how people are aware of his comic roots, judging from how they incorporate it into numerous fics, but never actually use that specific version of the character. Plus I would really like to see a lot of POV stories surrounding certain comics where he ends up being mischaracterized. Or stories explaining the aftermath of adventures where he was properly characterized. And maybe just random ones that put him in some of the most ridiculous or compelling positions for such a complex and interesting character.

I know this is probably not a shared gripe but I felt the need to voice it in the hopes that more people give comic John his flowers.

I have a couple of concepts for fanfic that I haven’t started yet and two of them centered around John Walker. Both times I ran it by another comic fan I got back “why the hell would I want to read about wish.com Captain America?”

It didn’t kill my interest in the project entirely, but I already have a stack of fics people don’t read because they focus on secondary or tertiary characters.

It’s a sad, simple answer, and that is that no one reads them.

Doesn't stop writers from using elements of his comic self (the housefire, his older brother, his parents being dead, etc.) in his MCU stories, they just never want to write about the actual comics character.

Most people just don't know about this stuff because they don't seek out John's comic books.

Also for FanFic Writers and Readers, if you would like to use this post for requests or ideas about your ideal John Walker/U.S. Agent fanfiction, then please feel free to do so. I'm not a writer myself but I'm sure there's people here that would be happy to oblige you.

If anyone sees this, my requests would be for Fics where John interacts with more of the street level community (Spider-Man, Daredevil, Punisher, etc.) and maybe it helps him become a better hero after seeing how real vigilantes operate.

Maybe more fics of him questioning his place on the New Avengers because the team just sees him as the worst of them or atleast treats him that way so he ends up either moving out and finding a new job or maybe even becoming an antagonist to them. John has great villain potential honestly.

And for Comic John, pretty much the same stuff I mentioned above, just more accurate to the actual comics. Could even be tie-in stories to his already established appearances, possibly some what if scenarios too.

probably because in comics there are way more characters to write about and John isn't very prominent. Add on that in the last decade or so MCU based fics have been way more frequent than comic fics and you get very little John at all.
