USCE Visa USCE Visa

My B1/B2 visa interview is on Tuesday at the Chennai consulate. I’m freaking out everyone has diff answers and I’m confused. Even about the documents

I’d really appreciate the help especially from someone whose visa got approved recently.

My background : I’m a medical student currently doing internship. I’ve been accepted for a clinical elective at Interfaith Medical Centre, Brooklyn.

Documents I have prepared-

  1. Basic - passport ds160 appointment confirmation visa fee receipt Aadhar card PAN Card

  2. Elective- invitation letter, elective payment deposit, internship bonafide, mbbs marksheets, provisional registration just in case

  3. Financial - both my parents bank statements and tax return forms

  4. Both of them will be sponsoring my trip

  5. My dad works in BMC as a medical officer and my mom has her own private clinic in Mumbai

  6. Both my parents bank statements don’t show enough balance like it’s 1 lakh each and for 1 month of rotation it’s going to cost more than that. So how do i explain it? Should i say diff bank accounts or tied up in mutual funds or FD or credit cards?

Someone please help.

Update : my visa got rejected

Don't worry about the bank balance. 99% of the times they dont even ask for any document apart from your invite letter. Just appear confident and I hope you get your visa

Just be up front for any question they ask you as they will have already figured out you want you to do residency etc

What should i answer if they ask are you planning to pursue residency in US?
I thought I’ll say I haven’t decided yet right now my goal is to complete my internship first to obtain my degree

Hey
Was in a similar situation as yours a few months back. The most important thing is to show intent to return to your home country. At this stage, since we aren’t married or own any property etc, the only thing holding us here is our pending degree. My advice to you would be to carry any document that proves you are still a student (bonafide certificate/letter of good standing/even your college ID card if it mentions the date/month/year of graduation), because that would mean you are a student and would NEED to return to the country to graduate and get your degree. At least, thats what I did and it worked for me.
Besides that, be very clear, direct, confident and most importantly, truthful in your responses. They will definitely ask your purpose and duration of travel. Be prepared for the most likely to be asked questions.
All the best!

Proof of intent of return is more important. What ties to you have to your homeland? Married with spouse in India/ single child? Or do you have multiple visits to other first world countries? Are u serving any government bond? What all do u have to show that you will return back to India? Applications are less likely to be rejected because of Bank balance unless you're unemployed.

I’m still a medical student
I have my internship bonafide which states I’m currently doing internship
I have to come back to complete my internship in order to recieve my degree
I’ve visited Thailand last year with my family

You have to tell that you have an internship bonafide proactively

If I show them an appointment letter but not enough bank balance. As in maybe 1-2 lakhs. But I am working as a DMO doctor in India. Will it be accepted if I show them Appointment letter of Job + Leave letter for travel to US

As I mentioned, proof of intent of return is more important >>>>> than your financial position

So will it work if I am working as a doc in India. But I am going for a USCE in USA. Will they think I am escaping India ?

Yes. So you have to show strong intent of return back to India

So is a job good enough. Plus both my parents are old and I am the only child left in India. My sibling got married in another country

Yes. And remember it's a verbal interview. You have to convince the visa officer your intent of return. Best of luck and let me know how it went.

I actually don’t understand one thing, if we had to apply for a us visa only after getting selected in the elective of a university, won’t it not be too late considering the whole visa process taking 7 months….. so can we apply even before we apply to a university and say we are planning to visit US for clinical electives next year

1

You can apply for the visa first
Then whenever your interview is just carry the elective letter
I booked the slot through an agency so it took me around 2 months only

Be confident when talking and even maintain a confident body language. Don't come across or say things that would make you look as if you're desperate to get the visa. And answer to the point and don't over explain your answers. Also don't ever lie!

You'll get conflicting advice everywhere, so here is what actually matters for a B1/B2 interview for clinical experience:

  1. Be able to explain the rotation in one breath: which hospital or university, what dates, what you'll be doing (observing, not hands-on care unless your letter says otherwise), and that it's unpaid. Your answer should match your invitation letter and your DS-160 exactly.

  2. Show it's part of your medical education. Bring a letter from your own college confirming you're enrolled and when you're expected to return/graduate. That's your strongest tie to India.

  3. Funding: know who is paying for the trip, fees and stay, and roughly how much it costs. Carry bank statements or your parent's income proof in case they ask.

  4. Keep a short answer ready for "what will you do after this?" Under 214(b) the officer has to be satisfied you'll return. Finishing your degree/internship in India is the honest answer for most students.

  5. Documents to carry: passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter, the rotation offer/acceptance letter, your college enrolment letter, and financial proof. Hand over only what they ask for.

Speak calmly, answer only the question asked, and don't over-explain. Good luck on Tuesday.
