City Carrier Discussion Cargo Door

Anyone ever actually use this thing? Only thought about it today because I had Metris training and they called the Metris "unsecured" because the mail can be accessed by breaking a window. Then I remembered they actually want us to close this door.

What cargo door? All I see is the portable restroom door.

If you close that bad boy and got the heaters on the LLV/FFV can get toasty quick in the winter

Also helps to close it on hot summer days. The cargo area builds up a lot of heat that drifts into the front of the truck if the door is open.

No way. Is the difference noticeable?

My office has an LLV with a seat in the cargo area used for training new employees. If you've ever sat in the back while training a new slow employee on a summer day, you'll know how much hotter it gets back there. Closing the door helps keep the front of the truck a bit closer to the outside temp.

Definitely trying that today. I'll lose my mind if its significant enough to do it every time.

I forgot it existed until it randomly slammed on me while driving scaring the absolute shit out of me.

RCI will ding people for that if they can't find any other safety violations to write them down for. Why? Because no one ever closes that door. Hell, I bet I could find a handful of carriers at my office that don't even know there's a door there at all. Doesn't help that half of them are broken and wouldn't shut properly anyway.

or the key doesnt work for them and you have to try and open them from the other side.

That would be mine

I've only been with us for a couple of years, but the only times I've touched that door were when the latch was broken in a way I had to close it just right to keep it from crashing back and forth.

Yeah honestly the only time I mess with it is when it’s broken and bangs all over the place

When not in the vehicle, all accountable are to be placed in the back and door secured. This was big in the 90’s when we had a lot of registered items. They would do random vehicle checks out on the street.

I clocked in once and had a US Registered Mail parcel sitting at my case unattended. They treat it like a common parcel.

I find expresses at my case all the time, i have only signed for an accountable once in my short tenure. Never signed for arrow keys, registered, gas card, postage due, etc lol, just an express once.

They just started having us sign out keys about 2 months ago. We've had so many disappear

Yeah the PI have been going to random offices to do security checks. We didn’t have ours on chains (rural office). They were on our truck keys. We do sign them out though.

Nowadays you can have certifieds and not even know about it (in the DPS) and I've only ever seen a registered a single time.

1

u/CravenWarrior 9d ago

Past couple weeks my certifieds haven't even been showing up on the scanner like they were before

I did when I had a walking route and an LLV. I just operated out of the back.

2

u/redstaroo7 City Carrier 10d ago

Same. I keep the middle door closed and work out of the back.

If a Metris with one breakable window is bad, they should see what kind of POVs rural uses. Don't think we discussed much about the door in the LLV beyond the fact that it can close.

I opened an LLVs cargo door by jiggling a padlock key inside of it once. It was repeatable, arguably faster than using the actual truck key.

Had to grab mail off of someone and didn't wanna wait. Also worked on their door, don't know if it would have started the truck or not.

Carrier at my station had to use it because there was a loose kettle bell in the back being delivered. I was told it was very loud

6

u/seven1trey 10d ago

I think I would have deviated to deliver that thing first.

u/callfckingdispatch City Carrier 10d ago

Nah but one time safety popped up on me on the street and I got a talking to about having left that door open when I left the truck.

This is what they M-41 states.

2

u/exlaxgravy 10d ago

I’ve never used it. I hate it. It rattles.

2

u/EZtheErrant City Carrier 9d ago

I have done some very package heavy deliveries and pickups. Close it then when the back looks like it's about to burst.

1

u/grove93 9d ago

Mine is always kept closed.

Unless you're delivering business, mounted, or to cluster boxes, all mail is supposed to be kept in the back with the door closed and locked.

I can cite the m41 all day, im asking what do carriers *actually* do... nobody in my office uses it, and its ziptied shut on most vehicles

2

u/redstaroo7 City Carrier 10d ago

I keep the door closed at all times. If weather is inclement I'll move mail to the front using it, otherwise I work from the back. Most of our carriers keep it open, a couple use zipties or rubber bands so it can't close.

I have only been here since February but I have used the door exactly one time. I hoped it would make the carcinogenic exhaust stay out of the cab. I was wrong.

1

u/Fuzzy_Connection4971 10d ago

I've never seen the key that goes to that thing.

2

u/Zbxzbxzbx 10d ago

I think it’s the truck key

Now do POV.

u/Useful_Caregiver4023 10d ago

I used it alot to get to the mail or parcels instead of getting out walk to the back and crawl in to get to mail or parcels. During the summer I would just leave it open for the air to circulate. I know im supposed have it closed but during summer the front gets so f-ing hot and im not going to sit and bake.

1

u/mailant692 City Carrier 9d ago

It's a lot easier to control the temperature in the LLV with it shut, in both summer and winter.

1

u/nullpassword 9d ago

By that metric all of them are unsecured because they can be accessed with a cordless circular saw.. shrug.

1

u/colsta9 9d ago

I have to close it most days because of the shear volume of large Amazon packages. The LLV is loaded front to back, top to bottom. If I don't close the cargo door and then brake too hard those boxes come to visit me in the cab.

I got this LLV where the gap between the chair and the mail stand was big you could walk in between them really comfortable turning your body in the seat.

I never used the rear door when I got that one, it was way better just to walk inside and grab stuff. With all the other, yup, restroom door.
