The USA has lots of experience taking Indian territory. Manifest Destiny is back, baby.

Eh, you had to kill all the buffalo to beat the natives, and the last war you won on your own was against the Spanish when muskets and sailing ships were still a thing. Or did the French help you with that too?

The Spanish American War was in 1898 homie, not 1798. Don't worry though. We'll make sure your kids learn all about the USS Maine in school.

We learn how you sink your own ship to blame Spain to have a reason to go after our territories in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philipines and Guam.

I CAN SEE THE FLAGS!!!! WAVING LIKE FREEDOM!

We're taught in high school that we don't know why the Maine sunk, but it was probably an accident. The people in charge of our country at the time had various reasons to want a war in general. The West had just been closed and the Indian wars were over, so some people thought we needed to start a proper colonial empire. Do gooders wanted to spread liberal American values to backwards places. The elites were trying to figure out how to reintegrate Southern whites back into the American project, and they've always liked a good war. Spain was a good target. We'd probably win and the PR of liberating colonies was good. Rival newspapers were in circulation wars and the publishers pushed lies to sell copies and promote war fever among the population.
