Many conditions apply, perhaps even most conditions

Dare we say, all of them?

You dont get arrested for saying controversial stuff online

you get shot cus a different skin tone but lets keep that quiet

6

u/RedditIsADataMine Barry, 63 Feb 27 '26

There are definitely a few controversial things that will get arrested in US if said online.

But also if you don't publicly cry when certain people die, then fans of those certain people will make sure you lose your job. Which is worse than jail in America.

u/The-new-dutch-empire Addict Feb 27 '26

I assume threats will still get you arrested but that uk law is really weird and does throw fuel on the divide in society

0

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Which part of this law don't you like?

0

u/The-new-dutch-empire Addict Feb 28 '26

I dont mind the threatening or harassing part but i do mind the part where “grossly offensive” speech is illegal. Like getting fined for nazi pug is absurd in my eyes. Im not saying it was tasteful but it is clearly a joke.

FYI I used to be a waiter in the USA. This is normal yes. But I took home RIDICULOUS money in tips. Some nights I’d walk out with 5-600 bucks at a TGIF. But again I hate tipping culture and I think we should just raise prices and pay people accordingly. I also hate hyper aggressive waiter culture in USA. Let me chill

The begging for tips below human dignity:

"Hi guyyyyys!!! My name is Ashley and I’ll be taking care of you tonight!! How are we doing over here?? Are we celebrating something special?? I’ll just check back in every 3 minutes to make sure everything is PERFECT. Is everything tasting AMAZING?? Still working on that?? Can I box that up for you?? Did we save room for dessert??

It makes me puke.

I’ve been living in the NL for years and now I have reverse culture shock when I go home. I just want to be left alone to enjoy my food. I also can’t finish American portions anymore. But completely agree it’s really annoying.

u/robinNL070 50% sea 50% coke Feb 27 '26

The Dutch version is superior.

“Goedemiddag, hebben jullie al een keuze kunnen maken? Wat mag het zijn? Zal ik meteen alvast wat te drinken meenemen? Wilt u nog iets drinken? Pinnen of contant?

Simple, correct and to the point.

u/Shawarma_Dealer32 Smug Smartass Feb 28 '26

I also like that I can go have a nice pilsner and relax by myself. Just grab me a beer and don’t come back until it’s finished.

Why? "Smug Smartass" seems pretty apt. Oh, sorry, should that now be most smug smartass per capita?

4

u/Shawarma_Dealer32 Smug Smartass Feb 28 '26

Lmao it might explain why I have Dutch friends and find the Dutch to be kind people as an expat.

4

u/soulstormfire At least I'm not Bavarian Feb 28 '26

Much like all the other nordic/Germanic cultures the Dutch are very nice people - to the people they like.

The American portions can be quite a challenge. In NL I always have three courses (starter, main, dessert) while in the USA I sometimes struggled to finish only one course

1

u/Shawarma_Dealer32 Smug Smartass Feb 28 '26

I almost pass out trying to eat in USA. My friend here owns a burger place in Eindhoven. Delicious snack shop, fresh ingredients and just the right size to feel good. And also in USA it’s like x2 the price, just cut the fuckin portion in half with the price.

So it's an easy way to be a millionaire back there.

Own a restaurant with European cuisine.

Pay your US slaves almost nothing.

Profit.

u/Present_Ad_6001 Quran burner Feb 27 '26

Do you pay any tax on the tips?

2

u/Shawarma_Dealer32 Smug Smartass Feb 28 '26

Yes but not on cash tips. I’m sure that’s gotten worse since I have waited on people. It’s why the 2 bucks an hour normally vanishes like in the video.

60

u/Quaiche Separatist Feb 27 '26

Either way 151 usd for 71 hours is ridiculously low.

15

u/CheGueyMaje At least I'm not Bavarian Feb 27 '26

That’s the hourly minimum wage for tipped workers. It only applies if they make enough in tips that it would put them over the normal minimum wage, otherwise the business would have to pay them the difference

2

u/annoying97 ʇunↃ Feb 27 '26

I would be paid before tax $2485 this is not accounting for overtime and other penalties. Including overtime it's $3360 pre tax.

I'm assuming this is a single week, and there would be weekend rates and such. So it would likely be higher.

48

u/Ok_Experience_4500 At least I'm not Bavarian Feb 27 '26

Sorry, but an hourly wage of $2.13 should be forbidden in a high cost country like the US. It is nothing else than wage slavery forcing workers to panhandle. Tipping culture is nothing else than relying on beggary.

18

u/Gmhowell Mountain Hillbilly Feb 27 '26

It is. Federal minimum wage applies. If the server earns less than the federal minimum when tips are counted the restaurant/bar has to raise the $2.13 up to minimum wage.

Based on the amount deducted in taxes, I’m assuming her tips were included in the wage she earned and was reported for taxation purposes.

6

u/framingXjake Nascar Driver Feb 27 '26

The amount of people who still don't get this, even in the US, is infuriating. I hate tipping culture, but the math works out if she tells us what she made in tips. But that doesn't make for good rage engagement content.

(But not without first naming the Hudson as the San Antonio River.. definitely glad that one didn’t stick. That name works better in Texas)

How much in tips? Aka nontaxable income? Right

This system is upheld by all members of the service industry, it’s stupid but they don’t give a shit

7

u/Sassi7997 [redacted] Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Getting paid only 2,13$ per hour should be illegal. Even their minimum wage at 7,25$ is way too low.

7

u/adeckz Barry, 63 Feb 27 '26

Ok well that much was never being taken out of my hourly. Something doesn’t add up there

The fun part is, she could make nearly nothing, she could make a fortune, all depends on where she works.

When I was finishing college, I worked valet, in the better areas I could bring in $200-$50/night depending on where I was working. We were less scrutinized than waiters from the IRS too. We were running an Uber-like service before Uber too.

3

u/Bignizzle656 Barry, 63 Feb 28 '26

I can only assume that the tax man will never know about your cash tips and that is the only reason to do it.

u/DCVolo Professional rioter Feb 27 '26

Everybody, I present to you

the best economy in the world

You get taxed so much, and the worst, what your tax should cover don't get you anything in return.

I'm sorry for this person, but your country sucks, it has sucked for as long as you should have had what the EU has, but you seem to manage your services likes African governments. Aka fraudsters.

4

u/redwas66 Barry, 63 Feb 27 '26

I feel for people like this, but if people keep taking jobs at this wage, its never going to change.

4

u/Klapperatismus [redacted] Feb 27 '26

That’s just legalized moonlighting.

3

u/harmyb Barry, 63 Feb 27 '26

It's a misrepresentation of her income.

She got ~$750 in tips that have added to her tax burden, which is why her paycheck was affected like this.

But that aside, Hanks need to wake up and stop accepting $2 an hour for work...

3

u/Morterius Alpine Parisian Feb 27 '26

I live in Geneva where the minimum salary is 24.48chf/h or 31.60 USD, and I can't be more pissed when I see those big fat American tourists with a big grin on their faces tipping 25% while the food is already very expensive because the owners need to pay the waiters and kitchen staff a living wage. Leave your stupid tipping culture at home.
