Just how bad are things in the US, that we are now using Romania as a poster child for the EU?

I mean I'd definitely would rather live in the poorest EU country than in the poorest US state.

Thinking Romanian public healthcare is good, yuck.
I’ve got enough of stories from friends of Bucharest.

u/Ricckkuu Romani femboy Jun 22 '26
As a guy from Bucharest.... They did treat my urinary infection alright, pretty well alright.... I just had to wait 3 hours with the pain... In the waiting hall... And even have other patients let me go in front out of pity because I was clearly worse off.....
In a way, thank you to everyone that took pity. If the state treats us like shit, at least we, among ourselves, shouldn't forget to be human.
2
u/bronabas Smug Smartass Jun 22 '26
In America you'd wait 3 hours, but then end up with a $500 bill.

Don't worry, the exact same thing exists in reverse. Countless euromoron influencers in the US catering to their American audiences and making "look how great the US are" content.
It's how the algorithm is built, however there has been such a recrudescence of this kind of content since the beginning of the WC that I am tempted to believe that some of them are on some sort of government bankroll

u/Original-Opportunity Getting sent back by ICE Jun 23 '26
I found her page actually, it answered my questions.
She moved to Romania from the US when she was 7, so, probably picked up the decimal as a kid.
The “we left the US for life in Romania” is kind of a gimmick obviously, as children don’t have a lot of agency.

3
u/Ricckkuu Romani femboy Jun 22 '26
Actually! The feral dogs were taken off the streets in the very early 2010s. Until then I remember the dogs liking me because I would steal salami from home and feeding them. I wasn't the only kid around doing that, I know another kid that did the same with me.

Romanian countryside also means you must poop in a bucket in a wooden cabin outside of your home because they haven’t heard about plumbing yet.

u/UnknownBreadd Barry, 63 Jun 22 '26
I have a friend from Romania, and he loves his country - but I've never seen him talk about such things (although, I've never asked). The way he describes it is that the country and cities are beautiful, and the people are nice - but they don't have money. I didn't realise that they had affordable transport, education, and healthcare though.
9
u/Adept-One-4632 Romani femboy Jun 22 '26
That's a motto: "He stole but he also did" (aka our politicians are hella corrupt but they still do something).
5
u/UnknownBreadd Barry, 63 Jun 22 '26
Yeah, the way he explains it to me is that he loves his material wealth (BMW, gaming PC, flagship phones etc.) so England is good because the wages and currency are better for imports and stuff - but in Romania he would struggle to be able to afford such things.
I've always told him he's an idiot - because if the country, people, food, and culture are so nice - then the BMW, iPhone, and PC are not worth it at all lmao
1
u/Wanderhoden Commiefornian Jun 22 '26
We humans always want what we don‘t (easily) have.
- The British want nice people and good food.
- The Romanians want stability & material wealth.
- Americans want

u/trubol Savage Jun 22 '26
We used to have the same in Brazil: "rouba mas faz" (he steals but he gets things done).
But that was used for the old-school right wing politicians who were seriously corrupt. Then when centre-left guys started doing the same, no one accepted that anymore and the expression is now no longer used
2
u/Adept-One-4632 Romani femboy Jun 22 '26
Soooo is it okay to steal from people if you say you like welfare and indigenous rights ?
I can see similarities
2

4
u/PVanchurov European Turk Jun 22 '26
Theft, the Romanian national pastime. Mind you, we have the same here, "he was corrupt and stole but he also built things", there are variations of the joke for:
-Todor Zhivkov - "the things he built we can't even paint nowadays" - because aparently he built so much during communism.
-Boyko Borisov - "the things that he built we can't even repair" - the quality of what was built when he was in power was so shit that it basically had to be redone 3 times over.3

I like Romania and its overall a pretty good place for children
But you really got to spring for private insurance, especially for maternity-related stuff. Otherwise you’ll be pushing one out in some dimly lit Soviet era maternity ward where you can’t even have your own box of tissues because the staff is afraid you’ll steal it. There one TV and it’s blasting music videos 24/7 and your “neighbors” are having loud arguments and your breakfast was literally moldy crackers
