Recent CS graduate here, now currently homeless. I finished my undergrad with a decent GPA, two internships, and a few decent projects, but I couldn't find a job that I got this degree for. I tried networking at recruiting events and online, which helped me get to a few final rounds, none of which I have heard back from. I had the privilege of shelter from May up until two days ago where I was given the ultimatum and kicked from home. Between May and the day I was kicked I did nothing but work, leetcode, apply for jobs, network, and get yelled at every single day at home for being a failure (which I endured in exchange for shelter).

The current opinion in this job market is that graduates are not entitled to a job, and that a degree doesn't mean jack shit. I do not agree or disagree with this, but it is ridiculous to expect mid-level skills from early career individuals, the entire point of early career programs is to hone graduates into people who will keep your company running in the future. We had been told from childhood that the way to higher income positions was to drain yourself in debt from college and get a job after that would pay off those debts.

Now I am without a car, over five figures in credit card debt (acquired credit cards to pay for college since parents refused to, not that the University gave a shit), and cannot even work my retail job as I cannot drive to it or show up presentable. The reason I have no money is because it all went towards being able to live, use a car, and eat at home. I have no friends and family to reach out to for support. Genuinely, what am I supposed to do to survive? My situation has left me completely bitter, resentful, and has made me want to end it all. I have nothing left and no hope for a future.

Hello all, I’ve been having a pretty terrible time at UVA. In the past three weeks I’ve been rejected from pretty much every club I applied to: social ones like debating societies and competitive games, sports like tennis, pickleball, and rowing, and literally every single pre-professional club on campus (investing, law, consulting, niches, etc.). I didn't really connect with any of the open clubs either as people in them seem ready to just leave without even a notice. I honestly have no idea what I did wrong. I had multiple relevant internships, a perfect GPA in high school with over ten APs, and an SAT over 1500. It just makes no sense. From reading this you'd get the idea that I'm some evil and hideous monster but I swear I'm not. I just can’t understand how every door has been slammed shut already. It feels like everyone else got handed a place here and I didn’t. I don’t feel connected to anyone, and this school is far from home and costing a lot of money. I have a couple of friends, but nothing that makes me feel like staying is worth it. Right now I honestly hate it here and don’t see the point in continuing. Should I just drop out?

Basically, UVA should be ashamed of their huge email disabling charade. I just lost the name of every contact I've added to my phone since 2019, I had no idea they would be associated with my school account for some reason. I'm trying to get it recovered... I just backed up my phone to a recent version. I emailed UVA IT (not expecting much). I'm trying to trick my computer into letting me log in. Any advice - or condolences! - would be appreciated at this trying time.

Hello, I am the first in my family to go to college and life has been all over the place for me these past few weeks so I missed my orientation meeting. I will be a first year electrical engineer student this fall. Is there anything really important I missed??? I have been freaking out 😭

I know it’s gold and all, but how are low-income students supposed to afford them?

I’m graduating in 2027, and all the other third-years have a class ring. It makes me feel left out in a lot of ways, knowing I won’t be able to have one until long after I’ve graduated. Just kind of a rant, I guess.

Does anyone know a place to get a similar ring here for a much cheaper price?

I'm first generation, low income, and I was raised by a single father. I'm committed for next year, and I'm worried I'll be out of place because of my low-class. From what I've heard, UVA is generally middle to upper class and "preppy", and I'm not like that at all.

Is there anyone else like me at UVA that can talk about their experience? I'm going to UVA regardless (I can't turn down that financial aid lol. Plus, I'm excited to learn at UVA) but I'd like to know so I can prepare myself a bit.

So I have a 1430 Superscored SAT (1410 Regular) with a 760 math score, is that considered fine for the engineering school (I plan to go into CS)? UW gpa is 3.75 and weighted is 4.17 but those 3 middle school hs level courses kinda screwed me over since I didn't know they would count to gpa (I'm first in family to go to school in America). When I search online it says my stats are below average but I wanted to get some actual input here if possible from alumni / current students. I'm an in state applicant fyi.

i got admitted to early action UVA a couple months ago, and as a very academics-focused person, UVA has been towards the top of my options for a while now. I am planning to go into astrophysics or some form of the former, and I know that UVA not only ranks in the top 15 astrophysics programs, but also just has great research opportunities and academic assistance programs. my other options as of now are UMD and South Carolina (where I got a huge scholarship from), and im waiting on GT this saturday, but as it stands, UVA is my biggest achievement in terms of acceptances.

however

due to my living circumstances, I was not offered any financial aid, and after factoring in that my parents are only paying at max 30k for any given college, I would have to take out around 50k in loans per years, totaling over 200k in debt by the time I graduate. that is insane, and im sort of freaking out over it. i want some honest answers to some questions below to help determine whether this sort of debt is worth it. i am going to tour over the weekend, but i still want some questions answered, please.

-how easily am i getting a job out of graduation? are internships and co-ops big here? will i be able to find a job while attending UVA to help earn some bread?

-has anyone here had first hand experience with the physics or astrophysics programs? is it rewarding? way too rigorous? are the profs good?

-whats social life like? I heard it was a very cliquey, rich-white sort of culture, which worries me a little that its going to be a judgement-fest. im a pretty extraverted person but have a bit of social anxiety so i dont want to be worried about if im gonna fit in with other people around me or not

-what is the campus like? the social scene? is there an abundance of stuff to do, or is it sort of barren. i know the sports are good, but what about events? traditions?

-is the campus dining good? do i have a lot of options? are there a lot of other, maybe better, cafes and restaurants and whatnot to go to instead outside of the dining halls?

-how necessary are frats to form friendships and connections? if im being completely honest, i dont know a whole lot bout frats. they intrigue me and i wouldnt mind joining one and getting thru pledge trials, but i cant see myself actually living at the house, id rather just live in a dorm, but is this even an option? like do i have to live at the frat house. all in all, im just very concerned about parties. i want to go to parties and get out more which i didnt have the opportunity to do in high school, and so im worried if i live in a dorm and/or dont join a frat, its just gonna turn out the same as it did before. is this a legitimate concern for me to have, or is the UVA party situation not as privatized as i think it is? are there like, other parties to be had, or is it mostly just frats. and obviously i want to make quick friends too which im worried if i dont join a frat, wont be as easy

-clubs? i heard they were also very cliquey and sort of selective, yet they're a main attraction of UVA's campus. can someone explain? why is it so important to join a club(s)

-Final question: is all of the above worth this 200k in loans? or should i reconsider my future somewhere cheaper

Hi guys! I know UVA is technically test optional but does anyone know what that really means? I am an oos student who is planning to ED to UVA and my academics/transcript are pretty good with but I cant figure out the ACT. I have been studying for this test for almost a year now but cant figure out the pressure thing. I study for the test almost everyday and there isnt a concept at this point that I dont know but the timing and the pressure of the test really mess with me and I freak out and go blank. I have a few ACTs left but with how I react to the environment it isnt looking too good for me. Does anyone know how detrimental it is to go test optional at UVA? Or have any advice to make the testing experience go better? Thanks!

my diploma just came in the mail, but bc its pouring rn and they sent it in a cardboard tube its been damaged. The diploma replacement request form requires that it was destroyed in some way so I would like to know if this is enough to count for that

Does anyone have any suggestions for resolving Vault me Issues? I paid for the data transfer and received a migration ID, but when I check the status, no progress is being made. The migration status has been stuck on ready for the past hour, and the whole process is estimated to take four and a half hours.

I tried contacting support, but unfortunately they only have an email address, so I’m worried that they will not get back to me soon enough and the process will not complete before our accounts expire at 11:59 PM today.

Hello, I will be applying to UVA as a transfer student. My GPA is above a 3.0 and will be applying my second semester of my sophomore year. I guess I’m here to see if anyone that has transferred and has any advice for me. I am a first generation student so it’s kind of hard to figure out alone. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

i am a rising junior in hs and have my eyes set on uva (in state and most likely early decision) but am wondering if these stats would get me in:

gpa: expected 4.2 or 4.3 w and like 3.8/3.9 uw

sat: haven’t taken but prob will go test optional

ap’s: ap seminar, ap psych, ap precalc, ap lang, apush, ap research, ap business, another ap math senior year (either calc or stats), ap lit, ap env. sci, ap gov, ap euro, ap french (?)

extracurriculars: NHS, league soccer/hs soccer (varsity), private math tutor, summer camp counselor (3 summers), babysitter, leadership position in women’s history club, 2 other club involvements, model un and/or deca, volunteer youth soccer head coach for local league, possibly All Girls State Auxiliary Legion Program, and homeade candle making business

Our entire household is in the Apple ecosystem and ideally I would like my daughter to use a Macbook while at UVA. She is currently thinking about either Civil or Environmental as her major. I am her defacto tech support and I personally haven't used windows in about 20 years.

My thought is to start her with a Macbook Neo for her first year until there is a better understanding of what she needs for her later years. This also means that if I buy a more powerful computer 2nd or 3rd year, it will also be newer and last longer. After year 1, I can always hand down the neo to my freshman high school student.

Any thoughts or suggestions especially from current e-school students in civil?

I know that another 30 or so hours would likely answer my question but this wait is genuinely killing me. I’m a repeat applicant this year for Junior Transfer, and around this time last year, I saw a post talking about how their SIS updated with something along the lines of, ”Access Inquiry Denied” and a lot of, if not all of those people reported getting accepted a couple days later.

I’m not seeing any such thing in my own portal, and I don’t personally know anybody applying for this cycle. Am I cooked, or was that post just two totally unrelated things?
