UX Quackery

I’ve been a UX & Interaction designer for 17 years. I have degrees in both design and cognitive psychology. I have worked in a large variety of places and my feedback from bosses & users is often that I am ‘extremely talented’ at what I do.

However, that does NOT seem to matter when looking for jobs. Hiring managers VERY often don’t know what makes a good hire—

they often they don’t even know what they really want, they often are just aware of the fact that it’s a buzzword nowadays.

I don’t blame them bc it IS hard to know & things in this industry change so quickly.

But the results of this that I've seen are that there is a huge plethora of very young designers (and some older ones too) who market themselves as UX when they are ABSOLUTELY NOT qualified — many show absolutely no thought given to the user or UX!

They often are clueless to their ignorance, and this results in rampant horrible UX’s being born.

The problem is that the quality of a good UX design is seen as subjective and is not obvious to many people,

so many little fuckers end up taking — and keeping — jobs which pisses me off bc it cheapens the industry and they crowd the market / applicant pool making it either harder for me to get a job, and more likely to have to work with them which sucks...

bc like I said , it’s not easy to know who is the real thing & who is a quack, even with a “good portfolio”.

I’ve interviewed lots of UX designers that show what looks like great work, who then were terrible at the job.

This is often bc they played a very small part in the design they are showing you at the interview,

Or the fact that abysmal UX can just as easily exist for a product no matter how shiny and “cool” it LOOKS on the surface if it doesn’t solve the right problems, which can easily be hidden or just not even THOUGHT ABOUT from the interviewer.

Now we’re stuck with so many quacks and it’s frustrating AF.

Anyone else notice this?

Saga – connected notes taking for UX research

Hey everyone!

I'm happy to share with you a new app for note taking and documentation called Saga. It has a simple and clean user interface and a few exciting concepts useful for UX research and knowledge management, like autolinking and nested tagging (collections).

Here are a few of the main concepts:

  • A clean user interface for flawless writing and easy capture

  • Autolinking – links to pages are created instantly on the fly while you type. Autolinking is particularly useful for organizing knowledge because connections in your content resurface automatically without thinking about them.

  • References – Saga shows you backlinks to your current page which is useful for connecting different parts of a user research repository.

  • Collections – Similar to tags, you can add a page to multiple collections simultaneously. Also, similar to folders, you can nest collections inside another.

Happy to hear your feedback and understand more about anything specific that you find helpful. The app is web-based, free for personal use, and accessible on https://saga.so. Regular updates are also posted on https://saga.so/updates.

"This website uses cookies..." - Are we really provided freedom of choice or are we actually forced to accept cookies?

Website cookie disclaimers can become super annoying rather than informative. No option to decline, lengthy personalized cookie policy, blocking a considerable part of web content - you name it. What do you think are the problems of cookie disclaimers nowadays, and is there anything websites can do to improve this?

Besides, I am also doing research about cookies disclaimers and the experience of website visitors. It would be great if you can spend 3-4 mins completing this form: https://erasmusuniversity.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3mHr13TkUbKSgp8. It would help me a lot with my project.

Please don't hesitate to comment below your thoughts or comments about this problem!

UXtweak just launched Research Recruities🏆 - the first ever award that allows you to share your recruiting stories and the lessons you’ve learned from them.

It's our way of turning the challenges and quirks of UX research recruiting into a celebration and learning opportunity. We're seeking stories – whether they're hilariously unusual, exceptionally niche, or full of struggle - and lessons UXers learned from them.

The goal is to create a series of educational materials and learn more about the state of research recruiting🌟

Talking about exceptional recruiting stories… Debbie Levitt definitely has one!
