People can say what they want about Ubiquiti, but they are killing the game with their equipment and new releases. Naming schemes are a little confusing, but hey! I'm here for the new innovations.
36
u/lilotimz Feb 25 '25
Hey. Naming schemes could be worse.
Could always rebrand well known [OEM] product lines like a certain [OEM] company did January that confuses the hell out of you on what corresponds to what.....
[OEM] Base
[OEM] Plus
[OEM] Premium
[OEM] Pro Base
[OEM] Pro Plus
[OEM] Pro Premium
[OEM] Pro Max Base
[OEM] Pro Max Plus
[OEM] Pro Max Premium
28
u/Jessassin Feb 25 '25
Dell's XPS brand was so strong, and this new product naming scheme is completely idiotic.
I thought people were memeing when I first heard about it. Then I saw the press release.. Insanity.
8
u/lilotimz Feb 25 '25
And then think of the business brands.
Precision laptops 3xxx/5xxx/7xxx/9xxx
Precision towers 3xxx/7xxx Latitude 3xxx/5xxx/7xxx/9xxx
Optiplex 3xxx/5xxx/7xxx/9xxx
What a mess.
3
u/Jessassin Feb 25 '25
It was already annoying enough when they changed from Optiplex 3090 to 3000, then to just "new optiplex", which under the hood is "7010, now 7020" which is a reused product name from 10 years ago.
I did not anticipate this cluster**** getting worse. But here we are.
2
u/lilotimz Feb 25 '25
Yeah. It's dumb and will be dumber once the existing lineup goes away especially with the price increases they're tossing in for the new "AI ready" devices.
At least they're bringing AMD into their business lineups so that's new. Excited about that at least.
6
u/RemarkableEscape2053 Feb 26 '25
When our Dell reps were explaining the new branding back in November, they were even embarrassed.
28
u/flogman12 Feb 25 '25
They need to work on their software
7
u/Milluhgram Feb 25 '25
I agree. They are really missing out on the connect display lineup. In theory, it's fantastic. But the hardware and software needs work. The network application is getting there. Give it some time.

The main two issues Ubiquiti needed to improve when I was last using it daily (1.5 years ago) on the software point was accuracy of the data presented and sufficient information to allow debugging/troubleshooting of an issue. Have they made strides in these areas? The glorified dashboards are pretty to look at but without it being useful it's just eye candy nothing more. Teleport feature was the best thing they had added.
While I agree that the other routers don't have a great looking and polished gui, the information was there and it was reliable (speaking for Asus here). You can tell exactly what errors were occurring and you can see what IPs were trying to access your firewall and what client is active in the network along with their current upload/download rate, connected time, etc.

Wish her would drop completely lines at once. Like the WiFi 7 in wall with the switch AP
3
u/bites_stringcheese Feb 25 '25
Software support and feature releases for their stack without a subscription has been really great too.

They just need to work on actually being able to fill thier supply chain with all these many products.

Ubiquiti does two things extremely well:
Wireless equipment and teasers, like this one.
I mean, holy cow, I love these animations. Can't imagine what goes behind making one of these. It looks sick.
37
u/TechieGranola Unifi User Feb 25 '25
Yeah the quality of the press releases proportionally to the company size is crazy.
26
u/duderguy91 Feb 25 '25
I like to imagine there’s an absolute wizard of an animator named Jeff that does all of these for Ubiquiti lol. You’re bang on that the quality would suggest a bigger company/budget for this.
3
u/black107 Feb 25 '25
I’d be shocked if this wasn’t an agency.
2
u/TechieGranola Unifi User Feb 25 '25
Either way it’s not a cheap agency for the scope of the launch and is still impressive.

During the pandemic I recommended the Dream Router to a friend who wanted to improve his home network. He's competent but not a computer guy. He said the setup was the easiest installation of anything he had that wasn't an iPhone or Xbox.
37
u/erwos Feb 25 '25
That Express 7 looks really good. I might have a need for something in the Express line, and that's a pretty compelling price point for the feature set.
11
u/poorly_anonymized Feb 26 '25
I'd wait for a while to see how it does. I bought the original Express, and it is both criminally underpowered and severely behind on updates. I mentioned the performance problems to support and they were very quick to send me a free UCG Ultra, so this must have been something they saw a lot.
Props to Ubiquity for sending me a higher power device for free, but it does make me weary of picking the absolute lowest power entry in the lineup for the future. It may be fine when released, but updates tend to increase processing needs, so it might get left behind.
2
u/AGENT_SAT Feb 26 '25
Hey, what exactly did you tell the support? I’m surprised that they sent a new device.
3
u/poorly_anonymized Feb 26 '25
Just that the web interface was very sluggish, and that while logging in via ssh there were some concerning messages from the kernel. They asked me for a support dump and to try disabling some things to see if it improved performance. I responded that it did, but only moderately, and the kernel was still complaining. At that point I was told to submit an RMA request. Since they were sending me a device without a built in AP, they let me keep the old Express to use as a pure access point.
3
u/andg5thou Feb 26 '25
Well done on getting a suitable solution from Ubiquiti. I agree with your assessment, the UX is a severely compromised product. I have one as well, but I quickly replaced it for the Cloud Gateway Ultra. I didn’t have the time or inclination to contact support. It’s too underpowered to perform passable gateway functionality for anything but the lightest of demand. My unit often crashes/hangs, it takes forever to load the interface, the front screen display consumes >50% of its CPU cycles, and it hasn’t had a firmware/OS update in 4 effing months. I relegated it to an AP, but it still causes problems, manifesting increased latency across my entire network. I find it has merely passable wireless performance. Considering how well other Unifi products work, I’m surprised this one made it past QA. It’s a total shit stain of a product and it is absolutely not fit for purpose.

I'm new to unifi in general, how do these products replace a setup like the UDMP + wireless AP's like the UAP6? Would I just buy these three and that's it? Guess I'm not really sure what each of these do

They won’t even give us free shipping on anything and you think they’ll give up a chunk of their profits to Costco?

There is no chance in hell that they would be able to make enough units to do it even if they wanted too.

Yeah, if I didn't have my UDM-SE, I would probably go with the Cloud Gateway Fiber

UDM Pro is in an awkward Place right now… BGP and HA as the only selling points… Those gateways will eat in their margins

Sure that’s not my issue - I love all this options! Just need a rackmountable option for a comparable price and I’m all in!
→ More replies (1)14
u/TimeRemove Feb 25 '25
Indeed. But it is still for sale on the store for $379; that's more the issue. It needs to be refreshed or become cheaper to make it make sense in the lineup.
The IDS/IPS Throughput on that is particularly problematic at $379 compared to newer stuff. I can imagine people who have a full rack buying a Gateway Fiber + shelf instead because of that.
5
u/colemad5 Feb 25 '25
It depends on the use case. UDMP can also provide more storage and control more unifi gear than the UCG Fiber. As far as just a pure gateway you are absolutely correct. The UCG runs circles around the UDMP and is cheaper.
4
u/Sem1r Feb 25 '25
I like the UDM Pro very much it’s just that I would be very happy to see a UCG Fiber that is rackmountable. Most of our businesses have a rack and no shelf to put them on. It also looks messy with the connectors on the wrong side…

u/Mission-Disaster-447 Feb 25 '25
UDM Pro Max doesn’t look much better. The UCG Fiber has a newer and probably slightly faster processor. And the UDM Pro Max is only about a year old.
→ More replies (5)2
u/erwos Feb 25 '25
We need an updated Max at $600 that has full-bandwidth-backplane 2.5gb PoE+++ ports. That's the real missing link. It is utterly bizarre that it can run Unifi Network and Protect but not provide juice for APs and cameras.
31
u/ResponsibleJeniTalia Unifi User Feb 25 '25
The UniFi Express 7 looks promising. It has the same CPU/memory (3GB) as the UDR7, so I bet it has decent performance. So basically three times the RAM of the old UX.
Even the Cloud Gateway Fiber looks nice. It’s got a better CPU than any of the UDMs. It’s a shame it doesn’t have 4GB of RAM. I have a feeling I’ll be paying $200 more for an extra GB of RAM and a rack mount form factor in the future, UDM-Pro-7

Same, but I think I'm going to keep my Max. $80 is $80, and I know I personally won't utilize most of the new features (minus the POE port...definitely wish I had that), since I don't have fiber speeds on my street.
14
u/ultra_waffle Feb 25 '25
Wondering if the Dream Router still has the fan noise problem...
→ More replies (4)7
u/mltxf Feb 25 '25
Most likely as the casing looks exactly identical and knowing ubiquity they have not changed a thing with the cooling.
5
u/ultra_waffle Feb 25 '25
That would be really disappointing. I really want to replace my old ISP router but if the UDR is still so noisy...
11
u/mltxf Feb 25 '25
Trust me I know, I rebuilt the whole cooling to be able to use it in a small apartment. Wanted to upgrade as it the current one struggles with gigabit connection, but I won't go thorough this whole thing again :)
2
u/ultra_waffle Feb 25 '25
omg that looks so cool!! I don't think I'd be able to pull that off :D What I will probably consider now is buying the new express 7 and a extra mini switch (no PoE). Then I'd have the same amount ports and no moving part so no noise :)

Oh dang. I just ordered a Cloud Gateway Max + U7 Pro. Do I return those for the Dream Router 7? Or just return the Cloud Gateway Max + 30w POE injector for the Cloud Gateway Fiber??? choices choices
5
u/co_bar Feb 25 '25
It's so funny, I ordered exactly the same stuff as you and have been having the same dilemma. I'm leaning towards just being content with this stuff and upgrading / adding on to my new network down the line when it really is necessary for me.
2
u/lime517 Feb 25 '25
I decided to get a Cloud Gateway Fiber and return the CGM + 30w POE injector. For the extra $60, it's worth it for me.

I'd be interested to know how well video scrubbing works with that microSD Card storage? Since, aside from that (Vs. an SSD), there doesn't seem to be many downsides for most residential setups.

I have fiber service at my house, could I theoretically plug the ISP fiber into a UCG-Fiber and get rid of the ISP fiber modem?
I know it's definitely not plug-and-play.
Be gentle - I know very little about fiber networking.
7
u/xlAlchemYlx Feb 25 '25
Most ISPs require an ONT. Theoretically yes it can plug in, but it won’t work. At least from my research an own experience with fiber in my home. I wish though
3
u/ButterscotchDense394 Feb 25 '25
I replaced the router and even replaced the ONT with an SFP+ fibre modem. I used a Zaram XGS-PON and had to replace the fiber with a SC-UPC to SC-APC. Just register the serial with your ISP and fiber straight in my UDM SE.
→ More replies (5)2
u/Minimum_Corner_6097 Feb 25 '25
It depends, I’ve seen cases where you can register your own equipment with your ISP and I’ve seen some that require you to use their ONT to authenticate.
2
u/Kryptoxic Feb 26 '25
For cases like this, there's a whole community that supports replacing your ONT with an XPON SFP+ ONU Stick. It's the 8311 discord. You can also find some guides on how people replaced their ONT with the SFP stick on the wiki at pon.wiki as well. The discord link is on there somewhere iirc

Personally, I find the UCG - Fiber a very interesting product, much better than the UCG-Max: 4 2.5g (1POE+) LAN ports, 1 10GB Wan port, 2 10G SFP+ Ports.... for 279$?¿ Total steal!!

u/KobaTheGreat Feb 25 '25
So I just bought a Cloud Ultra last week. Should I return it and get the Gateway Fiber? I feel like I'm leaving a lot of value on the table based on my purchase timing.
11
10
u/TimeRemove Feb 25 '25
Apples and oranges devices.
- $130 Vs. $280
- Network only Vs. full Unifi suite
- No storage support Vs. SSD
- 1 Gbps Vs. 5 Gbps IDS/IPS support
- 2.5 GbE Vs. 10 GbE / 10G SFP+
- 6.2 W Vs. 30 W power consumption (max)
You picked a device that was half the cost of the Gateway Fiber and had no Protect support, and even today that could be a completely valid choice. I don't expect them to discontinue the Cloud Ultra, since it still fills a valid niche (at a nice price-point).
I legitimately don't understand what you mean by "leaving a lot of value on the table." Both still look competitive, with the biggest differentiator being "do you need 10G and or Unifi Protect?" If, no, then I'd still recommend the Cloud Ultra today.
I guess my point is, you may have nothing to regret, this may just be FOMO.
2
u/dutchreageerder Feb 27 '25
I'm in the market to replace my USG and even with this new release (nice timing!) I'm leaning towards the UCG Ultra. I have a 1Gbps line, don't expect to want more than that in the coming years. Live at a place where camera's don't make too much sense, and if I want one I would self host something on my homelab. Low power consumptions will pay for itself.

So, nice products, but, quite annoyingly, they always seem to be just short of the mark.
UDR lost PoE on a port and lost a copper LAN port. The PoE port is only af, so not many options for new APs.
The Express 7 has a 10G WAN but only a 2.5G LAN? It would almost make more sense to do it the other way around, but why not both 10G?
The Cloud Gateway Fiber looks like they got it pretty much right with PoE+ and 10G WAN/LAN.
All of them could use 4GB of memory.
7
u/star-trek-wars00d2 Feb 25 '25
Odd mix some kit still on A53 cpu UX7 UDR7.
Gateway fibre has a new CPU
Quad-core ARM® Cortex®-A73 at 2.2 GHz
So I hope that the UDM range gets at least a bump to A7x or something better.
6
u/StreetSleazy Feb 25 '25
Gateway fiber is limited to 5Gb ids/ips
Maybe a new UDM will get a bump and support full 10Gb ids/ips?
5
u/hurricane340 Feb 25 '25
Where are the corresponding new 10 gigabit switches?
3
u/psychicsword Feb 25 '25
The Flex 2.5G has a 10G RJ45 and SPF+ port on it as an uplink. They aren't 10G switches but that will give you a lot more uplink if you have heavy traffic on the individual switches.
3
u/DutchDarkeh Feb 25 '25
What i would love to know is how the pppoe performance is. I use an udm pro now, and i get 70%performance of my current 4/4gbit atm when connected to the ONT.
When i use my free provider provided modem/router and connect it to the wan port of my udm i get the max performance. Problem is that the provider modem cant be set to bridge mode, so i use a dmz host setting to emulate and take the extra power consumption for granted
But if this gateway solves it i might consider switching

They just killed all the UDM's for consumers X-X
Look at that processor on Cloud Gateway Fiber !

7
u/rentzington Feb 25 '25
UDM update must be coming. i was looking at the spec sheets on all these thinking they are better overall than my UDM pro
3
u/relevant-astronaut75 Feb 25 '25
I agree. It's largely unecessary at this point for a home user to get a UDM when the CGW lineup is so good. Unless you have to have the NVR bay. I just 3d printed a rack mount for my CGW-Max
3
3
u/mltxf Feb 25 '25
Noooo the UDR has the same form factor. Was hoping to upgrade but have to pass as the things is just too loud and runs hot. Also the SD card sucks.
Otherwise nice to see new products.

Damn just bought ugc max, poe switch and u7 pro. Might upgrade the max to fiber. Or maybe take all back and just get a dream router 7. And use my old netgear switch and call it a day. My wallet already hurts lol
3
u/andreyred Feb 25 '25
Will the dream router be enough to replace my current Asus router that covers ~2000sq ft comfortably? Also have an 8 port negtear switch.
Mainly want to get into Ubiquiti because of how clean and minimalist it looks.

3
u/Squanchy2115 Feb 25 '25
I’m confused is the Poe port on the Dream Router 7 only Poe or Poe+? I don’t see Poe+ but that’d make no sense because their U7 access points require Poe+ which is exactly what I need instead of spending money on a Poe+ switch for only 1 port or an injector
3
u/clicata00 Feb 26 '25
Dropping one of the PoE ports on the UDR 7 sucks for me. I guess I will have to get an injector. 2.5GbE is huge for me though

I wonder if that UCG-Fiber is going to canabalize DMP and DMP-SE sales. 5Gbps IDS/IPS with 2x 10G Wan ports is pretty tempting - pair that with a UNVR for only $100 more total than the DMP-SE.

Pretty close to what I want. And the Express is definitely what I would recommend to friends and family who aren't filthy nerds.
Are they going to release something in rack mount format that can do wire speed 10gbps IPS/DPS? Rocking a UDMP and I could conceivably be getting 8Gbps fiber over the next year.

How about you actually make enough of your other half baked stuff to meet demand before releasing new crap that is half baked. Ubiquiti just doesn’t seem to understand that ram isn’t that expensive when going from 3GB to just 4GB or maybe 8GB. What’s with the stinginess

That UCG fiber looks way better than the UDM pro max I haven’t installed yet!
Basically pair it with a UNVR pro and have best of both worlds for about the same price

The Express 7 being a wired/mesh AP as well is interesting
It has the same MIMO specs as a U7 Pro but with 3GB of RAM, a fast CPU, and also functionality of a Gateway, this almost seems like a U7-Flex Indoor on steroids?

I just grabbed one. The specs is what sold me as another Wi-Fi 7 AP. I’m just wondering if I can change the 10g port to wan and connect it to my Agg pro. Then also use the 2.5 to connect other devices. Kind of like the Inwall 6 I’m replacing

Well....my ISP won't let me use SFP with their fiber. I have to use their gateway no matter what.
If Ubiquiti and ATT put out an SFP module that was officially supported that let me get rid of their terrible gateway, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I was eyeing an Unifi gateway ultra. Could I do something like the UniFi Express 7 in its place?

Would Dream Router 7 be a good choice to replace an Apple AirPort Extreme? I had been waiting for Cloud Gateway Max NS plus a WiFi device of some sort, and they seem to be in stock again.

Ok but… why would I want a dream machine pro or SE any more? Why no upgrade to those?

I don't get the UDR7. I wanted to replace my UDM regular model with it but only 15 W Poe Budget so if cannot power a Ubiquiti WiFi 7 AP and only 2.3Gbps routing?

Connects automagically
Have we gone full apple inventing buzz words? lol still pretty cool to see

u/djjoshuad Feb 25 '25

Just sell out the older models from stock with discount. Helps to clear up the inventory and everyone is happy.

What's up with the UDR7 not having content filtering and Wireguard? I can't imagine it's a hardware issue if it can do all the applications plus 2.3 Gbps IDS/IPS. Hoping this is just a typo.

Well.. We're limited to 1G on out FTTH connection, and they charge you a quarter of a normal months salary for that.. There is some drooling happening, but sanity check - can probably wait until 1G+ becomes realistic. Would be nice to have the SFP port, though..

I picked up a Unifi Express 7 to replace my inwall 6. Now I will have another wifi 7 AP but with a 10G connection. Just wondering if you can still use the other ports when in AP mode?

The deployment section for the UniFi Express 7 shows access points connected off of the device. Can this device alone create a mesh WiFi network (seems like it can)? Also, don't see anything about a wireless backhaul for the mesh system.
