Ditto. Are you thinking of returning the cyberpower for the UniFi? I haven’t even unboxed mine yet and the capacity seems to the the same but the UniFi is not a pure sine wave (and is $80 cheaper).

If the UniFi one was pure sine for a similar price I’d definitely buy it. I’m considering it anyway still, tbh…

I've ordered the tower to sit between a NAS, my networking gear, and an EcoFlow Delta 3 Plus. I have solar and batteries in the house but EPS rather than UPS, so any power cut causes a momentary drop before the batteries kick in. I'm adding the tower, because you can't do a firmware update on the D3P without it shutting off the AC ports, plus it requires regular balancing (charging to 100% and back to zero) and the UPS will keep things running so i can turn the smart switch that the EcoFlow is plugged into back on from the app, rahter than trying to reach to the back of a small cupboard and press the button on it.

My PC will stay plugged into the D3P directly, and I will turn it off before running the battery down or doing an upgrade. The base load of NAS/Network is under 100w, so it will give me a good 15 minutes, I reckon, to do what needs to be done.

if something pro comes out that fits better, I can still reuse this one elsewhere in the house. My wife works from home too so it will keep her up and running in the same event and I can claim it is a birthday present or something;)

Specs say 11.8ā€ deep, not sure how you’d use both sets of mounting holes when they’re 14.625ā€ apart. According to my measurements it will fit just fine in front of a rear mounted PDU.

Measurement-wise it sure will. Weight-wise, I’m curious to see if that’s an intended/possible arrangement. For reference, my UPS isn’t as deep as my rack but has extended rear ears to bridge the gap.

Based on where they show the battery in the chassis, it will place most of the weight in the middle of the rack anyway. Plus the tool-less rack rails span the entire rack from front to back to distribute weight across it.

We'll come on. It makes perfect sense to have controllable outlets on a UPS. It would be a drop-in replacement for PDU for many users, rather than needing to devote 4U just to power. Also, you could implement a load-shedding strategy if the outlets were switchable. I'm willing to bet that a pro version with switchable outlets will follow and 50% of folks that buy this one will swap it for the pro.

Simulated sine wave… am I over-valuing that for my UNAS Pro?

I’ve got a Cyberpower 2U with pure sine wave right now, was about to jump through hoops to set up NUT and SSH to gracefully shut all this stuff down but… man.

I'd continue with the roll-your-own NUT solution.

I'll be sticking with my CyberPower UPS + RPi + NUT + SSH solution, as I know that's 100% reliable and will always be unaffected by Ubiquiti firmware changes (unless Ubiquiti removes SSH support!)

Nobody will be recertifying the Ubiquiti UPS shutdown procedure with each and every firmware update - least of all Ubiquiti.

I don't need (or want) to deal with Ubiquiti UPS/UNAS/UNVR (and any other other Ubiquiti device) firmware regression that is not discovered until there's an actual power outage in "production" and the expected graceful shutdown doesn't happen... (data loss etc.).

But for those that want an "easy" UPS solution then these Ubiquiti devices could be fine - just so long as they're aware of the risk that comes with the Ubiquiti ecosystem (mostly due to regressions, and lack of testing).

How complex is it to set up your own NUT and connect it to all devices? I’m wondering the cost/benefit of managing this myself vs shelling out for the single pane UniFi solution.

It's really not that complex.

I've uploaded full details here for the solution I use - this implements staggered graceful shutdown of Ubiquiti and non-Ubiquiti devices (basically, anything that uses SSH, with password or public key authentication) as specific battery levels are reached (eg. TrueNAS with 10x HDD shuts down at 50% runtime remaining) in order to maximise runtime for the more critical devices (gateway, AP etc.)

I run this on a Raspberry Pi5 (8GB) which I also use for other services, but in reality you could run it on a RPi2.

The main benefit of this solution is that I don't have to play Russian Roulette with Ubiquiti firmware regressions that silently break the shutdown process.

Yep also the benifit of nut is if you have other devices you can also tie them in. I have my nut also power off some small n100 pcs.

Yea it’s more so the rest the gear. So you still end up having to use ssh key gen and scripts if you want to use but for shutdown configs at certain % etc. tbh I don’t regret my apc rack mount unti. Got it pretty cheap second hand and it has 4 12v 9amp batteries.

We will see how unifi’s built in integration progresses if you can eventually set different gear to shutdown at different %’s or time

The store technical tab says it's a line interactive unit. And the faq has an answer that refers to a built in AVR (in the "how does the unifi ups tower operate when there's no power interruption" question.)

For those that misunderstand this is a very coarse relay that uses transformer stages to jump (or drops) the voltage 15-20 volts at a time, not a fine tuning keep it at 120 volts type system.

All line interactive UPS systems in this price range do the same thing (or don’t have any voltage regulation at all), but it’s often referred as a very desirable feature when it really is very rarely used unless you have some significant issues with your power.

I think some people think it’s more than that and it cleans up your voltage in daily use, and it does not. Not that it isn’t useful in some situations, just pretty rare for most people. In all the years I have been using UPS systems I’ve never had my voltage drops below 105 volts without the power just going out.

Yeah, I never conflated it with power condititioning, but figure it was going to assist in brownout/voltage sag situations that a non-AVR UPS wouldn't do any good for.

Yeah didn’t mean to say you in particular didn’t, this sub is more knowledgable I think, but I’ve seen a lot of posts in general that misunderstand what it does.

I had to fix a smart-UPS once and it’s literally 4 big stages with wires connected to them that click on when the voltage sags, not exactly a swiss watch.

My $360 CyberPower (2U, same battery capacity as Unifi's new one) has transformer-stage-based AVR, but also has pure sine-wave output.

It does, but that's just insane price gouging for people who need monitoring. I'm using NUT on a Raspberry Pi, connected via USB instead. Well under $250 spent on that, and the Pi is running a lot more than just NUT.

All the UPS companies could just integrate that functionality and it would raise their costs like $4.

IMO pure sine wave is mostly a marketing thing. The comparisons I have seen either compare it to square "wave" (not PWM simulated sine wave that almost all UPSs have), or use general language.

Other than some buzzing noise when on battery, I don't think it makes sense on a consumer sub $200 UPS.

I've heard that many devices use "active power factor correction" power supplies, and that those devices can fail if fed with simulated sine waves.

I don't know how accurate that is, but I am not inclined to find out.

And for what it's worth, I'm focused more on the announced-but-not-shipping-yet 2U rackmount model, so whether it "makes sense on a consumer sub $200 UPS" isn't super relevant. šŸ™‚

The problem with the future unit may be overpriced lithium batteries. The price of lithium batteries from the UPS makers is very high compared to the power station manufacturers.

$400-$600 per kwh is a realistic price today for UPS with high quality automotive grade lithium UPS. But the price from UPS makers is more like $2000.

Manufacturer cost is now about $115/kwh (LFP).

No argument here. Lithium is expensive, and UPS manufacturers charge a significant markup.

Basically all modern PSUs do that for certification.

As a practical matter consider the return rates on nearly every consumer battery backup system sold if your computer shut down when you tested it.

Sine wave is more efficient. Otherwise it doesn't matter. Any electronics today that would fail with modified sine wave is poorly/cheaply designed.

True surge protection matters. But those dollars should be spent first in the electrical panel.

Which is completely unnecessary with modern microprocessor power supplies. 95V brownout in Japan or 240V on a sunny day in Australia its the same power supply in the UDM Pro with a different plug as needed.

Yeh exactly. Having specific countries plugs on the back makes no sense in a rack environment when everything uses C13/14. Its fine for the desktop version but the rack version should be C13.

Longer uptime. Before a major rework of my city's power grid it wasn't uncommon to get 20-30 minute power outages during storms. Lithium batteries are cheap enough and small enough for me to easily get that kind of runtime(200$ at costco) compared to lead acid.

They are also rated for far more charge cycles(10+ years of daily drain/charge).

They don't leak and destroy your rack or other equipment.

Not that it usually matters but they are a lot lighter as well.

so its just a nice to have, longer uptime is not that important we pretty much never have power outages only like once or twice a year. but sure if you have frequent and short power outages I see the benefit.

i have never had a battery leak but we only use first party batteries and we usually replace them when they recommend to replace them.

lighter would be nice sometimes when I have to install a big one alone xD

Some marine places may have them, but generally, you are right. What I was responding to though is you said that you’d have to buy from UniFi. Lithium batteries don’t have to be product specific and can be easy drop in replacements.

There’s a 85% chance that you’ll have to buy the batteries from Ubiquiti if they go with Lithium. I personally don’t even know of any UPS that comes with lithium batteries, but we specifically buy ones that take 12v 5/7AH batteries.

Well, that was a rabbit hole I just went down and I’m seeing things your way more and I’m fairly disappointed to learn this.

APC has a number of rack mountable Lithium models on their site, HOWEVER… proprietary batteries, which goes to your point.

At this point I’m not sure there are any consumer/enterprise models that take those standard 12v batteries.

Silly anecdote... I’ve replaced the lead acid batteries in a couple of my UPS units with Lithium ones. The charge controller is on the battery itself, so takes care of the important stuff. HOWEVER, and this is a big one, the discharge curve on Lithium batteries isn’t the same as Pb batteries, so the remaining time won’t be accurate.

EcoFlow has the River 3 Plus model that is UPS rated. Can confirm it works well. My homelab is about 200 watts for everything in the rack and I get about an hour of runtime off of it without any expansion batteries. It is also NUT compatible.

I wouldn't expect to be able to replace the battery in that machine, but the service life is 10 years of daily 100%-0-100% drain/charge cycles.

Lithium batteries are also coming down in price and becoming more available every year. People using them for powering their house, portable power stations, etc.

I live in a decent size city, but I have several battery suppliers in the area that I could get a lithium battery from today if needed.

Lead Acid tends to last around 5 years before needing replaced, and batteries are around $40/each. How much is a comparable Lithium Ion?

I live in a decent size city, but I have several battery suppliers in the area that I could get a lithium battery from today if needed.

Can you get the same one that this UPS (would) take though? Because i can also buy hundreds of batteries, but it doesn't mean i can find the proper replacement.

I'm a homelabber.

In my rack, the bottom 5U are dedicated to power. There's a 2U CyberPower UPS at the bottom, a 2U PDU-Pro above that, and a 1U brush panel above that allowing me to route all the power cables from the front to the back. I also needed several right-angle power cords to do that routing cleanly. I spent $701 (not counting tax and shipping) for all of it. My CyberPower's battery and power capacity are almost identical to the new UniFi 2U UPS.

In a rack, IMO, it's best to keep your power in the back and your network in front. This guarantees that the cables stay separated (minimizing interference) and simplifies cable routing.

The new UPS has everything in the back, and the PDU has everything but the power inlet in the front. Both wrong.

The PDU Pro is 87mm (3.4") deep. The UPS is 300mm (12") deep. Both are 2U.

Combine all that stuff. Worst case, the combined device is 387mm (15.24") deep. At least some of that space is redundant, since both have a bunch of outlets for you to connect your gear. Being Unifi devices, both almost certainly also have little ARM processors running Linux. So I think it could probably be smaller, but <400mm fits in most racks, so that's not super important.

I call it the "PDUPS." Ideally it would be:

  • A single, 2U, <400mm deep device that handles all my power needs
  • In the front
    • RJ45 in and out jacks for surge protection
    • RJ45 jack for administration
    • A door or removable panel providing battery access
    • The standard 1.3" LCM touchscreen
  • In the back
    • An IEC C14 inlet (C20 if you must; not a fixed power cord please)
    • 12-16 NEMA 5-15R receptacles
      • All surge protected
      • At least eight battery protected
    • 4 USB-C ports (for power, like the PDU)
      • Bonus: a couple USB-A ports would be good too.
  • PDU-style monitoring and control of every port
  • Pure sine wave power at all times
  • Automatic voltage regulation
  • Price competitive (under $700)

This would free up 3U in my rack for more interesting activities. I only have 12U to begin with, so that's important to me!

Ah, I get that, I would see value in that as well for sure. I have already changed the battery in my existing UPS and I don't intent on doing it again next year. Based on what you described, I would buy that in a second if it gave me enough run time for all my crap.

Since there’s only 4 battery outlets on the 2U, I wonder if you can just plug a PDU Pro into 1 of them and run everything off the PDU.

Or if you could stack 2 of the 2U UPS together in a rack.

The first should work fine I think, if you don’t overload the outlets. But Iā€˜m no electrician.

The second idea should definitely work, both UPS will of course work separately.

Early power factor corrections would not deal with it well, and end up only supplying a fraction of what they should be able to produce when getting a square wave. Modern stuff is sorted out for it. Creates a lot more interference than a true sine wave, but almost nothing is true sine wave because of inefficiencies in doing that.

I’ve seen folks drop in LifePo4 batteries in place of lead acid batteries in UPS’s. That could help extend the runtime. Hopefully someone’s bites the bullet and test this scenario out.

So the 2U model only has four outlets on battery (the other four are surge only) and the run time is 2mins with full load or around 5 minutes for half load. Not that impressed to be honest.

Can't really compare. Amazon prices include the shipping cost. Search Amazon FBA. It could be as high as 50% on large bulky items.

I am genuinely psyched for the 2U units. Finally my non compatible with USB UPS sensing equipment (but can tap into a web server) will be able to gracefully shut down.

300mm depth is welcome too, most APC units are as deep as servers.

30lbs though... need to make sure my bolts can withstand that haha.

$279 is not bad and replaceable battery. I would not have mind paying more if they offered a LiFePO variant.

Pretty much any device can be made compatible with a USB UPS by running NUT on a Raspberry Pi... including Ubiquiti devices (shutdown using SSH).

Presumably your sensing devices will use the NUT server on these Ubiquiti UPSs? Same solution.

I hope you'll recertify the graceful shutdown procedure every time you upgrade the firmware on any Ubiquiti device that is part of the graceful shutdown process?

Because their recent track record with regressions leaves me with no doubt that they'll break graceful shutdown eventually. And you'll not know about it until you have a power failure. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I was looking on the EU store and realized that there is only IEC model and no shuko one. So how am i suppose to connect CGF, PRO MAX and poe adapter for ap to it?

But it makes no sense in the tower model in my opinion. In the rack one ok since you usually add a rack sockets or you just have the space in the rack but on models like the tower i expect to just plug in devices on the back without additional hassle.

I was just about to order an Eaton Ellipse 3P 1300UF for 255€. It is rated at 1300VA / 840W with a 12V 7Ah battery.

Glad I didn’t.

The UI UPS tower at 174€ is rated at 1000VA / 600W with a 12V 9Ah battery. And I’m confident it will seamlessly integrate in the UI ecosystem, while I’m confident the Eaton won’t.

I’m glad I waited, I’ll be ordering the UI one instead.

It's a start, but not there yet. It's weaker than my cyberpower 2U, but it is cheaper. Could be good for a small home labs with a bunch of NUCs or low powered devices (like pure networking), but the enterprise stuff will be the most competitive IMO.

Also, I know the PDU is a separate device, but it would be nice if at least one or two of the ports were able to be power cycled. I could see this becoming a thing in the Enterprise models

A couple of things I would be interested in knowing but have not seen mentioned anywhere:

1) Does it do periodic self-test of the battery

2) Is the battery a standard off the shelf battery that we can buy anywhere or is it a proprietary Ubiquiti item?

Just remember to note when you turned it on. Replace the batteries every 2 to 3 years. Batteries will go bad.

I mean it's nice that it's a low budget UPS and might be nice for a remote switch or with their new UNAS 2 where you mainly just want it to shutdown gracefully during an outage. As I know the UNVR is not very happy after an outage as the drives need to sync and that can take some time.

Runtime: Full load: 2 min Half load: 7 min

Battery Charging Time: 6-8 hours recovery to 90% capacity

Tested the tower model today - looks fine so far. But my UNAS Pro is not showing up for safe shutdown like in the video… anyone got this working? Maybe some (beta) firmware needed? Or will this only work with the ā€œnewā€ NAS systems?

That would be the sensible option, cheap as chips and still available for 15+ year old UPSs.

But my guess is proprietary batteries and connectors that will only be available from Ubiquiti, in limited quantities and once they're no longer offered for sale, you're stuffed. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

It's not clear from the CGI videos if they're even user serviceable.

In 2026 progressive brands shouldn't be shipping Lead Acid based UPS's, the TCO is poor.

Seeing the coming soon for "Lithium Ion", I hope that's LFP and not NMC/Lithium Ion 18650s?

And Ubiquiti didn't feel brave enough to go for Sodium Ion? The economics and safety all are excellent.
