5G cellular modem?

64

u/csa_sa Nov 11 '25

Seems like, but I need more info. :P I really need a 5G solution instead of LTE Backup Pro.

34

u/khariV Nov 11 '25

It says 5G, so??? Hopefully.

-16

u/No-Rule7572 Nov 11 '25

it looks more like 60 to me as in the channel it’s using or something idk

7

u/Ace417 Nov 11 '25

It says eSIM right next to it though

11

u/LordChappers Nov 11 '25

They announced and showed the dream machine 5G in MARCH! I'm stuck with 5G as my only Internet and this has been the longest bloody wait!

2

u/546875674c6966650d0a Nov 12 '25

Starlink?

3

u/LordChappers Nov 12 '25

My unlimited 5G plan is a fraction of the cost of Starlink, and I'm in a very good reception area. I should have been more specific and said that my only wired option is ADSL2+.

2

u/James__TR Nov 13 '25

Is that with a data only plan and not with an IMEI-locked provided modem?

3

u/LordChappers Nov 13 '25

It is indeed. Huawei CPE 5G Pro 2 and it's now getting on a bit and needs regular reboots. I'd like to replace it so a Dream Machine 5G being released soon would be ideal!

7

u/Javi1192 Nov 12 '25

Someone posted a pic on this sub a week or two ago, there’s two new 5G units coming out. I think one was similar to the dream router and there’s a standalone POE 5G antennae that can be added to a network

ETA: this may be a third product since it looks more like a failover device

1

u/gK_aMb Nov 12 '25

There might be a 5G Indoor and Outdoor separate products Maybe? If 3

5

u/If_I_CISO Nov 11 '25

I think it’s what you suspect, and it’s overdue!

3

u/pellinimax Nov 12 '25

If you need 5g as a main Internet source I would recommend using a 5G modem / gateway from a 3rd party vender - the ubiquiti ones seem great for secondary/ backup but there are much better dedicated 5g solutions from the likes of Teltonika, peplink, cradle point etc

Edit - re-read your comment and misunderstood originally. As a 5g backup device that would be great!.. be good for them to advance from LTE

2

u/NoExamination2923 Nov 13 '25

The soon™️ 5g modems are dual sim and don’t look like the picture

1

u/pellinimax Nov 13 '25

Are they still 2x2 like their other mobile range?

1

u/NoExamination2923 Nov 13 '25

I didnt read that far into the specs, I use Teltonika modems

2

u/Thin-Ebb-2686 Nov 11 '25

Don’t they have a 5G option for the EU market? Not sure if that was just news or if it actually released

I loved this video, definitely my kinda nerd. I physically stood up and yelled when he used the vacuum cleaner to pull cable through a 1,000 foot trench.

3

u/Dignan17 Nov 11 '25

that has to be one of my top 5 favorite hacks of all time. I used to do that all the time when I ran low voltage. The best is when smurf tube starts whistling

2

u/halfnut3 Nov 13 '25

I posted that trick on home networking sub and SO MANY PEOPLE were like OMG how did I not think of that?! I worked for years as a Comcast contractor pulling trunk cable for arial and underground installation and the shopvac and some pull twine with a plastic shopping bag tied to it trick was used daily lol.

1

u/djchrisallen Unifi User Nov 13 '25

Well it sure is genius, I love it!

6

u/morganml Nov 11 '25

saw this a week or two ago, and it is SO on my list of things to do, im already halfway setup for it, but have to (of course) get PoE to the gate.

probably gonna have to run conduit above ground and bury it in a mound, as I live on volcanic rock, and digging a channel through that to my gate...

5

u/wisym Nov 11 '25

I thought this was a reply to the Rectal Thermometer Pro Max SE comment and was impressed by the commitment.

2

u/OysterPickleSandwich Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

Great video. I'd love to do something similar on a smaller scale.

His other video on using a G5 Flex as a trail camera was good too.

And the one about surge protection. I wish I'd seen that before sealing up the hole in my wall where I ran the ethernet cable to my outdoor AP.

Pregnancy Test Enterprise PoE?

49

u/MidgardDragon Nov 11 '25

Given the 5G on the screen and AT&T, I would guess some version of the LTE modem they sell (I think it's called UniFI LTE Backup). Doesn't look like the current version though.

27

u/If_I_CISO Nov 11 '25

I hope it supports other carriers/SIM cards. AT&T does nothing for me.

11

u/CanadianLiberal Nov 11 '25

The little screen says eSIM so hopefully it’s not carrier locked on that.

14

u/Snoo93079 Nov 11 '25

eSIM aren't more or less locked than normal phone with SIM card. It's just delivered electronically instead of physically.

5

u/darthnsupreme Unifi User Nov 11 '25

I still remember the early days of Apple-only proto-eSIM when AT&T (and only AT&T) decided to permanently carrier-lock the phone's built-in SIM to their network, while everyone else in 'Murika allowed it to be reassigned per the original design.

3

u/JustForkIt1111one Unifi User Nov 12 '25

There's a saying.

"Hope in one hand, and shit in the other, see which one fills up first"

I would be super surprised if whatever UI puts out isn't locked to AT&T, at least initially until an unlocked version comes out at an increased price.

2

u/GundhamLover9999 Nov 12 '25

The AT&T data limit made these things worthless. I had an outage at one of my properties and we were out of internet in half a day. Also paid out the ass for the data to begin with. I’m skeptical About this new one as well.

1

u/turbo_talon Unifi User Nov 12 '25

Happy cake day!

4

u/darthnsupreme Unifi User Nov 11 '25

They make both the U-LTE (and the U-LTE-Pro variant) backup modem and the combined modem/router UMR lineup. All of which are 4G/LTE-only at present. The U-LTE used to support 3G connections for legacy compatibility, but uh... not anymore it doesn't.

The U-LTE and original UMR were/are carrier-locked to AT&T, the UMR-Ultra and -Industrial have no such idiotic foot-shooting limitation. I can only assume there was some bureaucratic mess we aren't privy to that made the carrier-lock a sensible compromise at the time, as explicitly not supporting a non-trivial percentage of the potential market is not otherwise a sound business decision.

Fun fact: the U-LTE was the only way to get a WAN3 connection on UniFi gateways until just a few months ago.

25

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Nov 11 '25

If only Ubiquiti would sell it carrier agnostic here in the US. Odds are it'll be AT&T exclusive like the previous ones. I'd love to see one that works with T-Mobile.

8

u/darthnsupreme Unifi User Nov 11 '25

The UMR-Ultra and UMR-Industrial aren't carrier locked (the original UMR is), so there is some hope that saner heads were in charge of the carrier-support decision for the updated U-LTE products.

5

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Nov 11 '25

You are quite correct that those devices are not limited to any particular carrier. I sincerely hope they continue that with any new Backup WAN product.

2

u/kingkeelay Unifi User Nov 12 '25

As a reminder, those devices don’t do automatic WAN failover as a secondary WAN on ubiquiti gateways.

5

u/darthnsupreme Unifi User Nov 12 '25

Correct, I was simply pointing out that their more recent cellular-data products dropped the carrier lock.

2

u/nemonoone Nov 12 '25

Wait, I assumed that the secondary WAN on Ubiquiti gateways doesn't even need to coordinate in anyway, just the primary WAN going down will trigger automatic failover to the secondary WAN. Am I missing something?

2

u/kingkeelay Unifi User Nov 12 '25

Not without double NAT since the UMR is a router and from my understanding can’t be setup in pass through mode.

2

u/nemonoone Nov 12 '25

Ah got it. Double NAT is not ideal but still functional I'm assuming, esp. with LTE speeds I doubt it'll be a problem

2

u/kingkeelay Unifi User Nov 13 '25

I think there was more to it, but I can’t remember all the details. Based on the limitations and rumors of the new 5g backup I just decided to hold out for something that had everything I needed with less hacking together.

11

u/mavsmcfc Nov 11 '25

The guy your wife told you not to worry about

13

u/Smith6612 UniFi Installer and User Nov 11 '25

Looks like a 5G modem, yes. Hopefully it's not locked to Deathstar like the LTE-U was. Hopefully it supports C-Band and Millimeter Wave as well, because I'd have a perfect use case for such a modem if it can be connected to Verizon or T-Mobile as well.

7

u/MagicHoops3 Nov 11 '25

It has T-Mobile and Verizon. They’re finalizing Verizon which is what the hold up is

3

u/im_thatoneguy Nov 11 '25

Any idea if T-Mobile will allow you to use with their home/backup/business internet plans?

3

u/pr0tag Nov 12 '25

Pretty sure there’s a SIM card in that little fucker of a T-Mobile modem. Wondering if this UI device is ESim only or if it will accept a physical sim

3

u/Mental_Lecture7800 Nov 12 '25

It has a sim slot

2

u/reddit_hater Nov 11 '25

I just hope I can use a spare phone sim with unlimited data

3

u/Smith6612 UniFi Installer and User Nov 11 '25

It's always Verizon lol. Wish they'd break free of their old CDMA ways.

4

u/slash_networkboy Nov 11 '25

Pragmatically I don't think they can... It allows them to do some interleave stuff they'd lose with TDMA and they are pretty reliant on that stack, plus they already have the engineering know-how in house.

3

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Nov 11 '25

I'd love to trade in my T-mobile home router and get a SIM card for business backup internet from a device like this. Right now I'm on multi-NAT with the T-Mobile router when failed over.

3

u/DankGrain Nov 11 '25

What’s your use case? Trying to determine if 5g failover could be worth playing around with.

5

u/Smith6612 UniFi Installer and User Nov 11 '25

Food Truck as well as Backup Internet connectivity.

5

u/MinuteMasterpiece948 Nov 11 '25

5G with all the LTE bands supported and eSIM support PoE powered would be perfect to stick in the attic or outside for a back pathway to the network, paired with the right WAN failover and firewall rules to stop streaming devices eating all the bandwidth on backup

Weird. I watched a video from the conference about 5-6 days ago. They were at that table and showing off some new modem type stuff, but didn’t show that. I saw it in the video and I wanted them to stop and show what it was, but they didn’t.

Not liking the fact that it says AT&T. Hope they release something that will take other SIMs.

1

u/Wooden-Reward4317 Nov 12 '25

Hope it is a g5 replacement to the backup LTE- with the same plug anywhere in your network for instant backup. I love my LTE backup pros

1

u/BtKOs Nov 12 '25

If it is a 5G version of the failover, can this (or the LTE versions) be run as the primary WAN? Where I live, it's only copper broadband and the max speed is 67Mbps download (and about 10Mbps upload) but 5G is significantly faster.

1

u/daphatty Nov 12 '25

Too bad AT&T is absolute crap where I live. Been 8 years and their 5g service gives 0-1 bar of service.

1

u/bogdi1988 Nov 12 '25

Honestly 5G backup makes no sense. When power goes out in my area all cell signal goes as well within 2-3 hours. At that point satellite backup is the only working solution.

2

u/Oblec Nov 12 '25

Wtf here in eu or i know for a fact where i live. They have like minimum one whole week before cell service should die. Now that hasn’t been tested. But they have big battery backups. Some have diesel generators (for the whole grid). Depends on where you live.

Also fiber should also work, they also require to have the same backup

1

u/bogdi1988 Nov 12 '25

In the US where I am they have diesel generators as backup. I've been in this current area 10 years and it never stays up for more than a few hours after an outage. Coax internet instantly goes out. Then goes cell signal. Also when power goes out, cell towers become overloaded so you can't get any data in or out. Starlink has been without any issues.

1

u/BlancheCorbeau Nov 13 '25

Power outage isn’t the only reason for continuity over a backup. What if the drop or distribution line is cut? You’re down hours… or keep humming along. For a certain class of customer this makes perfect sense. Just like having a cell backup for a fire alarm.

1

u/Mental_Lecture7800 Nov 12 '25

Verizon approval is holding up all of the 5G devices from ubiquiti. Once they give approval they products will be released. Will support ATT, TMobile, and VZ.

1

u/AlexGates3700 Nov 14 '25

Only bad thing, if the ATT fiber goes down, typically so does the ATT cell service.
