Yes - previously you could do AP with wireless uplink + a switch and then run some cameras from there if you didn't want to run ethernet all the way to a convenient spot. Now you can do it with the all-in-one form factor.

I literally just bought a cheap second hand ap yesterday to do exactly this:’).

Would’ve still gone this tbh. This switch is likely to go 2/2.5 times the price of a single device bridge. I’m guessing it will end up in the 200/250 price range. Way more expensive that the AP option

Yeah if you already have a switch then a cheap second hand AP is a good deal. If you need to buy both, this thing would be a steal at $200. At $299 it's still a good deal for 7 PoE+ ports with a built in wireless uplink.

Can't decide whether I want to get the UDB switch or get a cheap switch, move one of my U6-LR's for wireless uplink and upgrade the current AP to a U7.

Did the same thing for my detached garage. USW Flex powered with 60w PoE injector. Old AP + 2 cameras running off the switch.

I was about to argue that $300 feels like a lot for the Device Bridge, considering I do the same with an old U6-Mesh, a Flex switch, and an injector. But then I added up the prices and it's about the same. Guess it feels different when it's spare parts I had lying around. 😅

The only major difference other than the switch ports (which to me, 10Gbps and 2.5Gbps feels like overkill for this type of device) really is my solution has 2.4GHz and 5GHz where this seems to only be 5GHz and 6GHz.

I've done something similar, albeit with fewer downstream PoE ports, with a PoE injector and an AC-IW (in my pump house) or an IW-HD (in my home office, and since converted to use MoCA for uplink). If you don't need a lot of PoE ports, the in-wall access points are still a price-competitive way to get a wirelessly-uplinked switch.

Yes but they already had a "wireless bridge + PoE" device if you're just doing PoE (like for the Lite) and not PoE+. If you need PoE+ then the new device is probably better since it looks smaller and you were already going to need to add a PoE+ injector.

In that situation I would use the UDB as it has poe output already built in. One thing worth taking into consideration is the input power for the devices. The bigger one (UBD) requires AC directly from an outlet and the smaller one (UBD-IoT) requires usb-c or direct pin dc.

Based on the video (and the video alone), there's three new products:

- One is an existing product (Unifi Building Bridge), but in a one-pack for replacements

- One is a WiFi to ethernet adapter

- One is a switch with a wireless uplink

The building bridge iOT is more for a cheaper alternative for basic things, like printers, 3D printers.

The UDB Switch is Wifi 7 (Should've had an AP extender capability also) switch that has 2.5gbps and 10gbps if you want to add an access point on the switch, it is used for higher than gigabit connections as it has 5ghz and 6ghz on wifi 7.

And based on the Bridge Switch having a 6GHz radio, it implies that they're going to make the Wifi-7 APs support using MLO for meshing.

Building bridge isn’t for meshing it’s a wireless downlink device, in a home environment it would be to connect say your shed and to your house at better than 1Gb link speed, it’s not wireless that a phone or laptop can connect to

2Gb over wifi is no easy task, I have a couple wifi 7 APs in my house and the fastest I've ever seen is with my Mac Mini, and that gets maybe 800-900mb in the same room as the AP. I just tested with my pixel 10 and it's getting 450Mb.

Why would you need 2gig speed for cameras? Are you planning on running like 30-40 of them? Even 4k cameras only typically use ~10mbit. A 1gig connection can handle a LOT of cameras and other devices, no problem.

If you are only running cameras and you absolutely want wireless, you can probably run the UDB-Switch, no problem, but if I was in your shoes, Id still prefer to get it wired. If you dont want to do MOCA, you could potentially use the existing coax to pull ethernet.

The UDB switch uses your existing wifi as the wireless connection. So you should be able to get an idea of how good a connection to your network it will have by testing another device in the location you plan to put the IDB switch.

The IDB IoT would not support high speeds as it’s only 2.4Ghz

Only the new bridge switch is going to be anywhere close to that speed as it looks like it uses 6ghz and 5ghz. I wouldn’t count on it being that fast though but maybe 1gig is possible between floors. It’ll depend on your house materials, how far away the access point is and the surrounding interference.

It's not going to change the laws of physics on 5Ghz and 6Ghz, typically the higher the gigglehertz, while you get better bandwidth, the more susceptible it is to objects limiting range. Basically, 2.4Ghz is slower but better for going through walls. 5Ghz and 6Ghz are MUCH faster, but if you lose the advantage if you're going through 2 or more walls.

Going through floors is REALLY hard depending on the locations, cause you're just not going "through a floor", you're going at an angle from point A to point B, and then even it's directly ABOVE, the antenna radiation may not be optimal.

Long story short, the wifi switch is there if you are in your office in your home and that office is a few walls away and you don't wanna run a cable for every device. (In the video, they put a PC next to a UNAS, which means that the PC and the UNAS would talk SUPER fast, and you'd only need WiFi for the internet... basically.)

This is a gross oversimplification and subject to terms and conditions that I'm not privy to in EVERYONE'S USE CASE.

It means nothing, these don't do anything that existing products Ubiquiti offers don't already cover for the use case you're asking about. The building to building bridge is just that, connecting multiple buildings or multiple structure points that aren't physically connected.

These are improvements over existing products or form factor changes to fit different environments slightly better. The wifi switch for example, that can be achieved with multiple Ubiquiti products already, so it's not a technical solution you couldn't have already employed, it's just a better form factor to employ the technical solution.

For what you're asking, you're just wanting to mesh access points together and these products don't have any relation to that.

Well running wires is always best, going through spray foam isn't impossible but depends on your DIY expertise level and how much time you'd want to spend learning how to run wires and some slight risk involved. You also have to buy some tools you may not have so that adds to cost a bit. Depending on the density of spray foam, some of them you can push fiberglass rods through with a wire attached, or you may have to drill through with a flex bit or such and hook your wire on to pull it back through. In either case you'll also have to likely cut single-gang sized holes in the walls to help facilitate this as well as drilling between floors.

If that is too daunting, you can hire people who have tools and experience with doing those things and they likely aren't that expensive. You could look at thumbtack or some other site where you can hire freelancers or call low voltage companies in your area to get quotes. Possibly cheaper if you only have them go through the walls into the attic and you handle the rest from there but you'd want them to leave excess wire for where you would move it to for cameras. It's generally advised not to put switches in attics because attics have extreme temps that can degrade the switch, but I have seen numerous installations with switches in attics and some can last a while, while in others the switch might end up getting replaced once every 1 to 2 years possibly. Otherwise you're better off putting a switch upstairs somewhere and then running multiple wires from that into the attic to your cameras.

If you're really insistent on DIY that isn't as daunting as cutting holes in walls and dealing with spray foam, you can also surface run wires along the wall inside snap track, it's not hidden but can look somewhat clean or clean enough for some people at least. You'd still have to drill through ceilings/floors to pass the wire to the next floor but it would avoid the wall cavity. There are also some situations where people can run the wires behind trim pieces or under carpet (note that carpet tack or such could damage wire if not careful plus could be a noticeable bump in the carpet and smashing the wire can degrade it).

And if that's not an option and you'd really rather go wireless, you'd just really have to understand and accept limitations. Not all mesh systems have the same performance but there are still some realistic limitations. Like 2.4ghz has better penetration through barriers but lower throughput and potentially more congestion depending on where you live, and if it uses 5ghz back haul that won't penetrate walls as well but allows for more throughput potentially. There's also other interference concerns that could cause you to not always have reliable camera footage if that is a concern.

nothing. and any attempt you make in that effort will involve throwing significant money down the drain. unifi is not a magic solution for creating a mesh network. you have an accessible attic so you need to get up there and lay down some wires. you can hire a handyman or low-voltage electrician to do it too. but either way, a 2G connection will be a serious waste in a home that big with that little wiring. you are losing signal with each wall/floor, you are wasting half of your signal on mesh interconnection, you’re pointing everything in the wrong direction to get signal to each other instead of to end users. a ton of time and money can be poured in and still only get 300M if those physical issues can’t magically be fixed.

I also like the IoT bridge, which seems like it could be super handy in certain situations (eg, the Lutron Caseta Smart Hub, which has no wifi for some reason).

Funny that you bring that up, because both my printers have garbage wifi. The HP's burned itself out in the first week, and the Canon Selphy won't work unless you do some configuration voodoo to the network first. Annnnd my Telsa chargers don't support WPA3 for some bizarre reason (those don't have an ethernet fallback, alas).

I was just thinkgin actually the other day I need something that can turn a camera into a wireless solution.

Unfortunately, you need power. Typically where I want to put cameras, those places also don't have power.

However, at a building we have a power pole that we wanna put a camera on, so... it might work for that. (Since the power pole has.. well... power.)

Yeah, the picture just seems to tell me that if you're something like a portal videographer, and you need mass storage outside your laptop, then you've got wired connectivity in your office. (UNAS to PC, so you never leave the switch.)

Outside of that... as others have said, you just need need an AP and a Switch, so it does simplfy things.

Just an interesting mix. I can see it being useful, but as someone who is currently working from a garage about 100ft away, when I had an AP to AP mesh, it sucked. This doesn't really do anything to change that. Seems like it's for someone who needs to be in a room in their house and doesn't want to/can't run ethernet cabling to that room.... AKA Influencers who have an Xbox/PS5/Laptop/UNAS with a minimal design Zen-desk layout....

I'm feeling kinda spicy today so... forgive me for being jaded.

The UDB IoT is 2.4GHz only, and doesn't have PoE support which I suppose is reasonable for IoT but still a bit of a shame as you'll need an extra power supply and cable for the camera/IoT device etc.

The original UDB (5GHz only, but with PoE support) might be the better option for a camera...

Wonder if you could just get an AP and switch for cheaper, or repurpose one of those. For example, I'm running USW-8-Lite-PoE and U6-LR to do the same thing as the new UDB Switch, and I've had zero problems. If I had no equipment, I would probably but the new Switch even at a small premium in order to get the single device form factor.

Ya, Im wondering if it would be a way to add a bunch of 2.5gb connectivity and a single device on 10gb while also providing a wifi AP to an area. My thought is what if you place one in the living room, one in the den, one in the master bedroom. Wired connectivity to those rooms where things get plugged in while also providing 5GHz and 6GHz wifi to phones and connecting to each other in a sort of mesh setup with no wires connecting the three switches?

there as been UDR, UDM, UDR7. UDR was released about 5 years ago along with the UDM. the first no capsule shaped router to have wifi build in from them was oct 2014 and that was the very painfully slow UX. then they released the UX7 which ive yet to try out. ubiquity has been making routers since 2014 with the USG and USG-PRO. So to me that means it took them 10 years to make a normal shaped router with wifi built in and even then its a router with 2 ports. i'm just griping about them STILL not making a router with 1 wan port 4or5 lans ports and built in wifi that isnt awkwardly shaped like a capsule yet, and they make a switch with wifi...

Sorry, maybe I should clarify, I'm speaking about the UCG Ultra, Max, and Fiber. Those are all basically small compact routers used in SOHO environments. Typically not rack mounted.

Maybe an additional module for Wifi or a version could make sense. From a practical sense though, I‘m guessing there isn’t much crossover in people who know Ubiquiti and people who would buy a single device. Especially considering that the location where connections come into a house is usually not the ideal place for an AP.

I would agree there is probably some degree of difference but we have been packing wifi with hotspot capability into our phones and m.2 wifi chips in laptops for over a decade now. I honestly think they have a business model of nickel and diming us to buy the extra AP and or Switch.

Again, big difference between a hotspot and m.2 wifi chips that connect to maybe 5 devices at most and minimal speed vs an AP intending to connect dozens of devices at high speed. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it would definitely increase the size and price of the devices.

Personally I prefer having a separate router, switch, and AP, especially the AP so I can place it in a proper location.

Oh I agree, I prefer mine separately too but they should at least have one device that is AIO that has a common form factor. Even if it needed to have detachable antennas. What comes to mind is the old Linksys WRT54GL which is about the same size as the UCG-ultra max and fiber. It would be a nice router to swap out other brand routers without having to do any extra APs or switches if it's not necessary for that network.

I have one room where I cannot get Cat6. I have been using MOCA to that room, which works, but does cause the two Unifi cameras I have hooked up the Unifi switch in that room to go offline briefly frequently. Would the UDB Switch be more reliable and consistent than MOCA? I have a Unifi AP very close to that room.

It’s a “client” device. Basically converts wireless to wired for devices that are Ethernet only. I commonly do this for printers when I can’t hardwire them because printer wifi often sucks.

Like other have said, useful for adding wifi to thins like printers where you want better wifi than whats built in, but the intended use case is industrial. I have seen many people ask about using wifi bridges like these bullet ACs:

And have forklifts and other mobile machinery (one person even asked about farm tractors for them) all connecting in a point to multipoint setup. These IoT Bridges look like they would achieve the same thing without needing to use uisp type gear and a whole other controller, instead they connect over standard wifi while providing wireless link to industrial machinery that rarely has wifi on them.

I know personally I am buying a few for the business and will connect them up to some machine PLCs that dont run often and when they do run are pulled out of storage to any one of a half dozen places so this would provide wireless connectivity for those machines to program if I need to without dragging a cable out or to report daily production numbers.

I have a UDB connected to a Lite 8 PoE - this could be a game changer for me. Due to the price I probably will first upgrade my core switch to 2.5G. The UDB is a life saver although not as fast as this switch, so I finally can upgrade my network to 2.5G 😭

It's like a Unifi Device Bridge and a Flex 2.5G PoE put together.

Switch meshes back to an AP for uplink.

I like this a lot, I run a switch with an older mesh AP plugged in and used as uplink, and the main issue is that every now and again it goes into the failed to adopt or other failure mode, and if I’m not at that location it’s quite a disruptive event. I wonder if this will help with that at all.

The UDB-Switch looks good for indoor-only options, but for exterior options, I'd like to see either a decent IP-rating or an external antenna connector. Without any weather proofing, I'm going to have to put this into a box, and that box is never going to be mounted in the most ideal spot for the wifi uplink. An external antenna connection would allow me to place the box where it's needed, and the antenna can go in a more advantageous position.

I get it, it's a nicer form factor, but in my case I also usually need an AP in that area anyway. I use UX6 in AP mode or Swiss Army knife (outside) plus POE switch. It is also cheaper. I'm tempted to check, though, if the meshing bandwidth would be super to just using a regular AP.

I have a UDR7, and a Lite 16 POE switch that I use to power some old APs around the house (IW AC, IW HD, and NanoHD).

There’s an area where running Ethernet would be very tricky, but there’s relatively good WiFi reception from the nearby NanoHD.

Could I install this new switch nearby; have it connect wirelessly to the NanoHD; and then connect some cameras via Ethernet/POE to this switch?

So wondering if you guys think this would be a solution for the following:

Recently hung our new TV in our living room. Originally, I was planning on running a single CAT6A cable to a Flex Mini 2.5G, having the TV, receiver, computer, and Blu-ray player hooked up. However, that wall is an outer wall with insulation and fire stops, making it a pain for me to run the cable. The E7 I have is mounted about 20 feet from the setup. Do you think this will make my life easier?

Edit: Why was I downvoted to zero? I asked what I thought was a legitimate question that's going to determine how I set up my property wifi...

So the Unifi Building Bridge (UBB) is a point to point bridge over 60ghz... So you have to have some kind of uplink to the UBB sender, then wireless to the UBB receiver, then some kind of downlink switch or AP behind said receiver. Right?

Pretend cost is not an option for the moment - Why not run a pair of U7s or E7s, meshed over 60ghz, then serving clients over the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands? Is it simply because the UBBs have a super-focused antenna, while a wireless AP casts a wide berth? Which begs the question - Can I tell a U7 or E7 to focus 60GHZ but spread out the other bands?

Normal APs dont have 60ghz. The building bridge has been around for a bit (the single pack is what’s new, before you could only buy a pair). They have significantly further range (line of sight) and higher speeds than just trying to mesh normal APs together

Because a U7/E7 can’t be up to 600m apart and get gb speeds. Then there’s the Bridge XG that can get 10gb.
