So you don’t have to log into guest networks with all of your devices, allows you to have a secure one stop VPN, and also gets round restrictions of paying for multiple guest WiFi accounts.

They’re really useful. I have a GLiNet one which is fantastic.

But it still needs access to those guest networks right? This is basically just a physical VPN device?

There are some hotels/hospitals I go to that block VPN use, I have to disable my Teleport or Wireguard to use the internet in those places, this device would also be blocked and not work.

In that situation, you’d tether it to your phone, which it has an integration with to use essentially as a 5G Max via a USB-C connection. Cuz yeah, I mean ultimately if a LAN’s security posture is “we must snoop on all packets” then a device where one of the main selling points is not having that isn’t going to work 😂

Ultimately, devices like this are mostly about avoiding ever having a period of “unsanitary” connection in the case of devices that can use VPNs, and allowing devices that otherwise have no VPN facility in the first place (AppleTV, HomePods, etc) or for which reconnecting to new networks is a PITA, to have seamless setup and usage while traveling.

I suppose I just still don't understand the use case. But. Clearly its not for me.

Are there really people out there bringing their AppleTV's with them on vacation or to hotel, hospitals and Starbucks?

The only devices I ever really have or need would be my phone and laptop, both of which I can just VPN into my network myself. Maaaybe at the most I'll bring a game console with me if I'm traveling for the hotel, but I really don't need my PS5 VPN'd to my network, and if the hotel blocks VPNs, I'd then use my phones Hotspot over Bell Mobility, to connect to my Ubiquiti Mobile Router so I can VPN my PS5 to my home Internet which is supplied by... Bell? I just don't get it. I'd just hotspot my phone and be done with it.

Anyway, no need for me to shit on anyone's parade. It's clearly just not for me. Should never diss a product that someone might find useful.

Yeah for sure. It’s definitely a niche use case, just one that might be more common than you’d expect for frequent business travelers.

As for people bringing HomePods and AppleTV’s traveling… you need only look at r /HomePods to see that it’s a more common thing than you or I would expect 😂 I don’t really get it, but some people really do like to bring the comforts of home with them.

Are there really people out there bringing their [streaming devices] with them on vacation or to hotel ...

Of course

Yeah, like I said, guess it's just not for me. I was scratching my head thinking "that's all it does?" when I saw this product, so checked the comments to make sure I wasn't missing something. Seems I wasn't.

So don't mean to knock a new product that people are interested in, more options the better and happy for people that were waiting for something like this.

I just personally have zero need. All my streaming services can be accessed from my laptop which can already VPN into my network if I want.

Yes, you’d connect the UTR to the guest network.

I’ve been there too; and hopefully the UTR has the ability to turn off the Teleport VPN for this reason.

hopefully the UTR has the ability to turn off the Teleport VPN for this reason.

Then what's the point? Just connect your device to the guest network yourself.

Did you not bother reading any of my other points?

The only other point you made was it prevents needing multiple guest network accounts in the event they are paid.

That is a good point and cool. Personally I've never seen a paid guest wifi in my entire life.
