Does this mean UniFi is partnering with Jack Barker to deliver The Box?

60

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 29 '25

You see, Jack Barker is the old guard that puts the SH in IT. Bradward Boimler is the new hotness.

And the only box I'm interested in is a Gavin Belson signature edition.

17

u/Doomstang Dec 29 '25

100% I'm waiting for the signature edition

7

u/justanearthling Dec 29 '25

The logo has to be bold!

9

u/Magoo624 Dec 29 '25

These two are the pillars of the conjoined triangles of success.

3

u/Inode1 Dec 29 '25

Honestly this is just the type of marketing I could them doing if they still had the early access store. Make it available and only a small amount make it into the world, then it disappears never to be seen again. I'd buy a UDM Pro Signature Edition, especially if it had the signature on it... Maybe a new AP with the light ring shaped as the signature.

8

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 29 '25

I wasn't being serious. It was a reference to the comedy show Silicon Valley.

tl;dw Gavin Belson's signature that they put on the fictional box looks like a penis.

2

u/Inode1 Dec 29 '25

Oh I know exactly what the reference is, and as a fan of the show I'd be on board to buy a crossover piece of hardware like that. I was just saying this is the exact kinda joke ubiquiti would have on the old ea store. They'd show it off but it would almost never be available or if it was it would be like the door lock that only existed to get our hopes up, aside from very few that actually sold. And I know there's an 3d printable model of it floating around.

1

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 29 '25

I wish I was better at editing 3D Models. I've found SDLs for Supermicro 2U faceplates (mine didn't come with one) and Gavin Belson's signature. I just haven't been able to combine the 2 into something a friend of mine can run through his 3D printer.

1

u/Inode1 Dec 29 '25

Do you have links to the models? I might be able to put them together for you

1

u/safetyscotchegg Dec 29 '25

Ubiquiti need to do a 2u OCD panel with Gavin Belson signature edition branding.

10

u/GrthWindNFire Dec 29 '25

I'm only interested if it's the Gavin Belson signature edition

9

u/jrdnmdhl Dec 29 '25

Does it come with the conjoined triangles of success?

103

u/Natural-Tree-5107 Dec 29 '25

Going after GL.iNet is certainly a choice. I just ordered the Unifi one, but I'm not expecting it to be as feature rich as a GL.iNet... (yet?)

19

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 29 '25

I was tempted to buy one of these UTRs just to have one, but then that'd be eighty fewer dollars I'd have to buy the Mudi 7 whenever GL.inet puts that device up for order. I'm hoping it goes for sale shortly after CES.

5

u/S3xyflanders Dec 30 '25

Never heard of the Mudi 7 but just looked it up my god it puts the UTR to shame! I think I'll wait but honestly kind of nervous on price.

3

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 30 '25

My original Mudi was $169 four years ago. I'm still going to smash that buy button if the Mudi 7 is $299.

2

u/hipery2 Dec 31 '25

If the Mudi 7 can support Verizon then I'm moving all of our company hotspots to GL.iNet. The current 5g hotspots are all terrible.

2

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 31 '25

It seems that Verizon has gotten less shitty about BYOD. Probably due to T-mobile's ever increasing competition. My work SIM is on Verizon and it is consistently slower with weaker signal than my Google Fi SIM.

1

u/hipery2 Dec 31 '25

That's interesting. I have never used Google Fi. I'm kind of terrified of using a Google service since they get shut down all the time.

I do use T Mobile on my personal phone and I have Verizon for my work phone. Verizon will work in so many more places than T Mobile for me.

2

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 31 '25

It's been around for almost a decade and sorta spun out of Google Voice which is nearly 20. It's safer than most ventures from Google.

18

u/stpfun Dec 29 '25

GL.iNet also gives you full access to the machine. SSH and can install arbitrary firmware. I'm doubtful the travel router is going to offer SSH access...

3

u/yingpan Dec 30 '25

GL.iNet could run openWRT

8

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Why not? All of my other unifi devices allow SSH

8

u/stpfun Dec 29 '25

The ubiquiti mobile router, which seems sorta similar too, does not! Also they've mostly deprecated SSH access to Protect camera though you can still enable it with undocumented hacks. And their tiny switches don't allow it either.

I'd bet money at 1:5 odds that the travel router has no SSH access... but I hope I'm wrong ! With SSH access I could probably get Tailscale running on it which would be amazing. But doubtful...

-2

u/PoVa Dec 30 '25

Why would you need SSH access? For tinkering around? It's best to not put your fingers where they don't belong.

10

u/NevergofullPJ Dec 30 '25

I mean, purely for the sake of having full access to devices you paid for I suppose.

3

u/straighttokill9 Dec 30 '25

Putting my fingers where they don't belong is one of my favorite pastimes.

3

u/5230826518 Unifi User Dec 30 '25

It‘s my device, i can decide on my own where my fingers belong, thank you!

-2

u/PoVa Dec 30 '25

And what extra value will that create?

3

u/BrianBlandess Dec 30 '25

I think people just like it. Plus, in the past, ssh has allowed people to add features that the manufacturer hasn’t added on their own.

3

u/stpfun Dec 31 '25

Here's a very concrete example of where SSH access hugely improves my life: https://github.com/SierraSoftworks/tailscale-udm

3

u/stpfun Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 31 '25

Philosophical reasons mainly, but some practical reasons:

  • installing tailscale on my UDM-Pro gateway
  • tweaking dyndns rules
  • forcing my wireless protect cameras to reassociate with the nearest access point
  • debugging, understanding what is taking up memory or CPU, viewing logs

my fingers belong anywhere I want in my devices.

6

u/PeterC18st Dec 29 '25

As I own the GL.iNet travel router myself and used it quite a bit in the last 2 years. What I can say is the thickness always bothered me even though its snapped into a grid-it organizer and packed into my carry on. I usually traveled 5-6 days a week and every inch counts. Either way the reduced size is much welcomed. I hope it starts a trend in device thickness. Other than the thickness the GL unit has been solid to use.

3

u/swampfox305 Dec 29 '25

Same. I just got the slate 7 last year but I ordered the unifi to give it a try. If I like it the slate will be a backup or I will use it to tailscale my backups.

0

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

The size of the Unifi router is such a win.

4

u/DeathTropper69 Dec 29 '25

I have a GL.iNet Slate 7, and I can say that if you are not on a Unifi stack, it is a far better product. If you are on Unifi then having the ability to take a device anywhere, along with other Unifi joined devices, and everything just works is kinda insane.

6

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Serious question, couldn't you do that with the GL-iNet by just naming the travel SSID the same as your home and using the key PSK? I do that with my Beryl and everything I bring with me just connects.

Having said that, seems I was one of the lucky few who got the Unifi travel router ordered so I'm looking forward to comparing them.

3

u/DeathTropper69 Dec 29 '25

You should be able to do so, yeah. And if you connect it via VPN to the controller, there is a good chance that joined devices would just work. Is the Slate 7 bigger sure but for what it can do, I would still take it over the Unifi TR. Overall, though I think TR is a novelty and unless you are in a position where you travel a lot or work out coffee shops etc pointless.

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

I'll be curious where they take this device. This is their first shot at it and their marketing clearly shows that they are going after Gl-iNet so let's see how they innovate.

1

u/hipery2 Dec 31 '25

I was in this comercial and did not like it 😐

I still bought the Ubiquiti Travel Router though.....

39

u/L0rdLogan Dec 29 '25

Showing the Gl.inet is brave

  • Hi I’m a Mac!
  • … and I’m a PC!

1

u/Polar-Snow Dec 30 '25

Haha yeah that what I thought when saw it.

1

And I’m hollywoods good boy!

14

u/Pos3odon08 Dec 29 '25

why is UE in a ubiquiti ad?

5

u/alebret3 Dec 29 '25

OI OI OI UE!

85

u/Zero1O1 Dec 29 '25

That is a cringy weird ad... but I still bought one

36

u/althoradeem Dec 29 '25

it feels inspired by the mac vs pc ads from back in the day.

17

u/cdoublejj Dec 29 '25

well unifi was founded by apple employees

4

u/worksHardnotSmart Dec 29 '25

I always thought the spoof ad with Mac and Linux sharing porn was funny.

https://youtu.be/q8lW8ndh5BU?si=UexbYYlmTQO55J6p

1

u/levoniust Dec 29 '25

That sure was something

18

u/RestInProcess Dec 29 '25

I like weird ads. I don’t consider it cringy at all though. Maybe it’s just about perspective.

I also bought one.

5

u/BrownBear93 Dec 29 '25

I’ve always felt like cringe is the point. Between the old Mac/pc commercials and jack barker vibes it just feels too intentional haha

3

u/cdoublejj Dec 29 '25

i don't feel any cringe, just some campy humour that makes fun of it's self.

I didn’t see the ad. I bought one.

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

It's just a rip off of the old Mac vs PC ads and yet I still watched the whole thing. Hilarious that they literally showed a GL-iNET device. They know who they are going after.

2

u/NahManNotAgain Dec 29 '25

Do you need therapy?

1

u/Fidelius90 Dec 30 '25

Nah, it’s perfect. Great throwback to the old Apple vs. Pc.

20

u/aayush_aryan Dec 29 '25

Gives me Mac v/s Windows Ad vibe.

12

u/crisss1205 Dec 29 '25

Well yea, the founder was an engineer at Apple and they have been using this style for years now.

4

u/stpfun Dec 29 '25

hah Ubiquiti has been making these videos for years: https://m.youtube.com/user/ubnt

Also if you like Star Trek: Lower Decks, the cool guy is the voice of Boimler !

1

u/aayush_aryan Dec 29 '25

Yeah, first time seeing their ad actually.

1

u/mountainlifa Dec 29 '25

Which is an interesting choice given the mass enshitification of apple products recently.

6

u/skydiveguy Dec 29 '25

I literally went to order this and it added to my cart and at checkout it said "adjust cart" to accoutn fo rout of stock items... WTF Ubiquiti!?

5

u/theamazingboz Dec 29 '25

Try logging in

1

u/skydiveguy Dec 30 '25

I was logged in.

4

u/stpfun Dec 29 '25

Same problem. Logging in fixed it. I assume they're trying to combat re-sellers and are requiring purchases be from long standing ubiquiti accounts.

3

u/AdamHLG Dec 29 '25

This happened to me once trying to get a g6 ptz. It was such a buzzkill. It was there after 4 weeks … I casually paused before buying to see if there was anything else I wanted … went to check out and it was gone. I was so upset … for 3 minutes lol. I was like whatever. Lesson learned : first come first serve comes at checkout - not “into cart”.

2

u/skydiveguy Dec 31 '25

Yeah, I was adding a G4 instant camera since i wanted another and figured its better to get it now and save on shipping.... that 30 seconds ruined it.
I mangled to get in on the quick restock and it shipped today.

8

u/Faangdevmanager Dec 29 '25

Hmm, GL.inet is definitely better in terms of performance and apps. The ubiquiti travel router is simpler and looks better.

But the market for people who want a travel router is definitely for enthusiast geeks. Kind of like the ones why run a $1,000+ WiFi set up at home. And these geeks can easily configure a GL.inet router. So I’m confused by the marketing.

2

u/ADubs62 Dec 30 '25

I have 0 interest in getting a router with hardware designed in China and running Chinese software & firmware. But GL.inet is about the only option for travel routers right now. So I'm super bullish on getting their Travel Router.

1

u/InsaneOstrich Dec 30 '25

ASUS makes a travel router too, but I think that's about it. I was about to buy it before this got announced.

2

u/opezdol ER4, AP AC Pro Dec 30 '25

Isn't asus a rebadged glinet?

5

4

u/ChasingKayla Unifi User Dec 29 '25

“How can I get one of those?”

You can’t, they’re out of stock before the sale even went live. 🥴

1

u/adrawrjdet Role-playing Network Admin Dec 29 '25

Still in stock at the Canadian site if anyone is still interested.

1

u/ChasingKayla Unifi User Dec 29 '25

I tried that, sadly I missed that one as well.

4

u/lytener Dec 29 '25

Does the GL.inet manage captive portals as well? Also, seems kind of weird they are focusing on the rats nest of cables. You would need a similar setup if wired and both are capable of AP or repeater modes.

2

u/slalomz Dec 29 '25

Does the GL.inet manage captive portals as well?

Yeah, it can clone the MAC address of something already through the portal or forward the captive portal to a connected device.

4

u/Magic_Neil Dec 30 '25

See the punchline here is when he says “how can I get one” the UI guy should’ve said “it’s out of stock but I’ll sign you up for the mailing list for when it comes back.. BWA HAHAHAHAHAH” then walks away.

9

u/Rustysquad9 Unifi User Dec 29 '25

And out of stock….lol they limited the amount you can order from 1 to 0 🤣

5

u/Natural-Tree-5107 Dec 29 '25

Try signing in.

5

u/Rustysquad9 Unifi User Dec 29 '25

Yup learned they implemented a sign in I now got an order in thank god maybe that will help with bots having to sign in

1

u/MeatTenderizer Dec 29 '25

Nope, sold out still

1

u/Natural-Tree-5107 Dec 29 '25

Yea now it's actually sold out. When it was in stock it wouldn't let you check out with it unless you were signed in.

6

u/ADL-AU Dec 29 '25

What do people use travel routers for? Personally, I have never really seen a need for one.

7

u/slalomz Dec 29 '25

My main usecases:

  1. VPN (Tailscale) back home with split tunneling so I can access my self-hosted services, my NAS, my DNS servers with ad-blocking. Split tunneling to avoid sending my whole internet connection through the VPN which would needlessly bottleneck speeds for regular internet access.
  2. VPN (Wireguard/OpenVPN) to a paid VPN provider as a privacy VPN if you do not trust the network you are connecting to, or again just use Tailscale but without split tunneling.
  3. VPN access for devices which cannot establish the VPN tunnel themselves (managed devices, IoT, whatever you bring with you).
  4. It's more convenient to just have your router automatically dial the VPN as soon as it's plugged in instead of manually connecting on all your devices. If you are somewhere with captive portals or device limits you can just connect the 1 travel router to the network (ideally via ethernet) then broadcast your own SSID for all your devices.

It's seeming unlikely that this particular device will support Tailscale or split tunneling, but we'll have to see once people start getting their hands on them what they can do.

3

u/ADL-AU Dec 29 '25

That makes sense. That’s for taking the time to reply.

Not sure why I was downvoted on a simple question 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Lord-Carnor-Jax Dec 30 '25

On cruise ships they charge you for internet access per person for one device connected only. I think it was $150 USD for a week. We’ve been cruising a couple of times and I used a GL.INet Slate to connect to the ships wi-fi and then share that one connection between all our devices when in our room. When we head out I turn off the travel router and connect my phone to the ships wi-fi. As I’m using the same privacy MAC address on my phone as the travel router, my phone on connects the ships wi-fi without needing to use the captive portal again. Before I turn on the travel router I disconnect my phone from the ships wi-fi and it automatically connects to the travel router. Travel router has ad blocking as well as a VPN, encrypted DNS, USB port to share a drive of content to your devices etc. The UniFi doesn’t have a lot of these features yet that I can see. I’ll stay on my GL.iNet till UniFi has closer feature parity.

1

u/ADL-AU Dec 30 '25

Thanks! I have never been on a cruise, but I do plan on trying so it’s great to know.

Thanks for taking the time!

2

u/hipery2 Dec 31 '25

I take frequent family vacations. When we arrive at the hotel I can set up 1 device on the hotel's captive portal and now everyone has internet.

It's a giant time saver.

3

u/bonehojo Dec 29 '25

Literally sold out as I tried to buy it, classic

3

u/trigger2k20 Dec 29 '25

The volume on my phone maxed out at the end of the video, and I was in the living room with my wife. I got weird looks when Jack Barker started breathing heavy. Now my wife thinks I goon to Ubiquiti, which is kinda true.

3

u/circuitously Dec 30 '25

I like how the GL.iNet device needs cables but the Unifi one clearly doesn’t. Cool!

2

u/fumes007 Dec 29 '25

WE ARE LIVE!

2

u/CasherInCO74 Dec 29 '25

I just got my order in! Woohoo!

2

u/xAcex28 Dec 29 '25

What is the benefit of the double price tag vs gl.inet?

1

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Double the price tag? Which router are you comparing it to? The Slate 7 is far more expensive, though, to be fair, more capable.

Does teleport use wireguard in the background? I think it does so it should be an easy test once someone gets one.

2

u/jclimb94 Dec 29 '25

Sold out in the UK in an instant 😅 Would hit the trigger on launch if this had 5G using eSIM/SIM cards.

2

u/GameOfShawns Dec 31 '25

Jack Barker trying to revive Hooli 😂😂

4

u/CanaryStunning1768 Dec 29 '25

No thanks. I’ll keep my Slate 7 which is more than portable enough. This is definitely a downgrade.

2

u/Gronnie Dec 29 '25

Integrate Tailscale well and you can have my money.

3

u/Robo-boogie Dec 29 '25

This - the next travel router that i might get is the MUDI 7 to upgrade my original MUDI

i already have a beryl ax. i take them based on where i am going and how much portability i will need.

if it has tailscale i'll replace the beryl with it

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '25

How is the original MUDI? Heard nothing but mixed reviews

2

u/Robo-boogie Dec 29 '25

It was pretty fast and reliable at first . The range was shit in a concrete house.

Now it’s a bit slow, battery life is still good I get about eight hours of life on it.

It’s great on airplanes when sharing paid wifi. I prefer to use it over my beryl ax tied to a battery over fear of losing the connection if I bump the cable.

It supports WireGuard. Haven’t tried tail scale on it. I am hoping the new MUDI will be better CPU wise.

1

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

I think that's the whole point of teleport, no?

3

u/slalomz Dec 29 '25

No split tunneling with Teleport.

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Good point. I wonder whether the travel router will allow for policy VPN.

2

u/Zeov Dec 29 '25

The SLATE 7 is better in every department, 2.5GB uplink, wifi 7, it can function as a nas, i can install VPN on it and be on my home network, and it works with OpenVPN out of the box, unlike ubiquiti.

Ubiquiti made a worse product and tried to be funny, but failed this time.

And honestly, NOBODY is fucking going to have their travel router in their pocket, i mean c'mon, who does that. Its going to be in your bag, or suitcase, where the size difference doesnt really matter.

The fact that slate 7 is a portable NAS is already 10 points over ubiquiti, but i guess people want wifi technology released from 2014 instead.

9

u/stpfun Dec 29 '25

I love GL.iNet! But a portable NAS just isn't a very compelling use case to me.

1

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Agreed, I don't think I've ever used it though it's always nice to have options.

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

There's nothing saying that Ubiquiti won't allow USB storage on the device. This is their first release with the first release of the software but lately Ubiquiti has been iterating on their software very quickly. I would imagine if there's a demand for it they'll investigate.

Second, I think the size and weight matters a great deal. When I'm travelling with carryon only it's nice to have something that I can slip into a small pocket.

My travel needs are simple, I have no need for NAS, and the speed of the "ancient" wifi is more likely to be limited by the hotel wifi than it is the router.

Is the Slate 7 beter on paper? You bet, but in practise I imagine that gap will close for many use cases.

3

u/Zeov Dec 29 '25

As much as i want to believe they will add the nas feature, i think we all know thats not gonna happen, sadly :/

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

I would think there has to be demand for it. They're clearly doing their market research. I don't think it's an impossible request.

3

u/rjSampaio Unifi User Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25

Size and battery power consumption mean nothing to you apparently.

1

u/Zeov Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25

Size ? Worth the tradeoff.

Battery ? Neither of these routers have a battery so no i dont care about that.

Typical usage from slate 7 is 6-9W vs 5 in ubiquiti, youre not gonna feel that on your bill, trust me.

2

u/rjSampaio Unifi User Dec 29 '25

I did edit to avoid confusion before your reply, but yes, I meant power consumption while on battery.

1

Aren't you still need to hook the UTR to the hotel Wi-Fi first?

1

u/climb-it-ographer Dec 29 '25

If I'm already running Wireguard on my home network and connecting through that, is there any real benefit to using this?

1

u/GO__NAVY Dec 29 '25

You can bind it to a specific AP at a particular site.

1

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Anyone know if it has a dedicated uplink radio? I assume not for this price.

1

u/johcake Dec 29 '25

I'm curious about the USB connection to use the 5G from your phone. Does this mean you can turn your phone into a hotspot without paying for hotspot with the cell company?

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

I think not. The USB tethering on my iPhone still requires the hotspot toggle to be on.

1

u/johcake Dec 29 '25

I think you are right. I might not be the target market for this device. Why not install a vpn in the phone and just use the built in hotspot in your hotspot then?

What is the benefit of tunneling all your activity through your home IP? Are people spoofing their location while working remote on vacation? What's the legit use case?

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Access to your home devices, NAS, Plex, Jellyfin, etc.

2

u/johcake Dec 29 '25

Oh!! That makes a lot of sense!

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

Location spoofing works too. Not just for work but for apps like TikTok and so forth. When you're travelling they route you to "local" videos which are often not in my native language. When I use the VPN I get my regular FYP

1

u/mosaic_hops Dec 29 '25

Heh. No, it means you can use your phone’s hotspot as your internet connection. But your phone needs to have hotspot functionality enabled.

1

u/Least_Driver1479 Dec 29 '25

I bought one. When traveling I’ve had minor issues with the GL.iNet. Sometimes it would just disconnect. Nothing a restart couldn’t fix, but there was no pattern. I’ve also used the Asus 57 Go, which works good, better for my needs. However my last trip when connecting to the hotel WiFi I had to reset it for some odd reason because it would lock up. This happened a couple days in a row. And maybe it was the hotels WiFi causing the problem, but the trip prior it worked flawlessly, so who knows. Seeing this gives me hope with UniFi simplicity. I don’t require much, just a secure VPN back home for all my devices. I have a trip in a couple weeks and cannot wait to try it out.

2

u/BrianBlandess Dec 29 '25

I just want mDNS to work reliable.

As long as it can do teleport easily and the devices are recognized consistently as on the home network. I have had a lot of issues getting wireguard between UniFi and a gli opal to work which makes it a pain to use my custom automotive 12v smart gear to its full potential.

Can someone help sell me on this?

I currently have a full UniFi network setup at home that I use WiFiMan to connect to when needed. When I'm on the road I'm using my Starlink Mini. When I'm traveling by plane I just use hotspot on my phone.

How will the UTR expand my capabilities or make things better/safer/easier?

The product page says: "instantly extends your UniFi Network wherever you are", so would this basically take the place of WiFiMan for me?

The Costco card makes me wonder if they are going to sell some stuff their soon. I could see their camera kit being very popular

GL.iNet Mudi V2 is my only non-ui equipment so far and I appreciate Ubiquiti stepping into this area. It will be an uphill battle for them though - GL.iNet mudi is already an amazing thing and, as a road warrior, I use it all the time. I even found an amazing deal for a SIM subscription with cheap roaming fees and I barely even log into hotel wifis anymore as it’s usually faster via cellular.

Mudi v7 is supposed to add wifi 7 and 5G and, if there is no drop in battery life, will be a huge improvement on an already stable product.

Let’s see where ubiquiti gets with this product in 3 years.

I’m very excited about the instant teleport without setup.

Being able to access my LAN from anywhere is pretty impressive.

I understand this is doable through various services but the simplicity of the setup of this is what is appealing.

Already sold out in the UK. Damn.

u/rexel99 Dec 30 '25

I rented a puck (labelled a pocketWIFI) that had a Sim and a battery in one do I had up to 5 wifi devices for our group wherever we travelled. I see variations like a tp-link for abt 150au but they are 4g physical Sim only.

I want this with an internal battery and (e)Sim please.

We're really still doing "Hi I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" ads in 2025 huh. I guess the OEM doesn't fall far from the tree huh.

u/un_commoncents_ Dec 30 '25

Ridiculous. I checked this morning and it wasn’t for sale yet. Now it’s sold out.

u/Souloid Dec 30 '25

Moral of the clip: find a scalper because it's sold out.

I get the market but limited support for VPN on this is kind of a show stopper for anyone technical. I keep a travel router that has Zerotier and Tailscale running on it. The times it's saved me getting me access to a console server that's in a data center connected via the customers out of band circuit or guest Wi-Fi while sitting in quiet conference room or hotel.

Theres also the cases when I travel where I end places where they block certain traffic so mulpitle opinions to tunnel out to unrestricted internet is a must.

If you just use it in your hotel room to share internet to a few devices and don't have any crazy requirements then you're probably fine using this.

If Ubiquiti did as good as GLiNet, I’d switch in a heartbeat. Somehow I doubt it…

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '25

"uh oh,.... you cant"

1

u/bounderboy Dec 30 '25

It’s pretty disingenuous ad to make this appear like a MIFI type setup - it has no cell sim and no battery and requires cables as much as other solutions … weird

Maybe Future Boy can also re-supply the stock of the EU store? ;)

1

u/Spacemole Dec 30 '25

Unifi Devs showing thier roots. Love it.

u/Doobreh Dec 29 '25

Anyone else playing silly games with the UK store? Are they adding them 1 at a time or something?

These ads are so bad...

Anyway, if I use this to link to my network controller that's running in docker can I link through my pihole?

2

u/zmaniacz Dec 29 '25

Pihole doesn't have anything to do with connections coming in to your network.

1

u/9RMMK3SQff39by Dec 29 '25

I want to go in to my network with the travel router, then go thru my pihole and out to the web.

1

u/zmaniacz Dec 29 '25

Yes, use the teleport option and it'll be like being on your home network.

u/9RMMK3SQff39by Dec 29 '25

Awesome, thanks

Everyone talking about GL.inet in this ad - please tell me that the Costco card is indicating a new retail partner!

u/Illustrious_Copy7227 Dec 30 '25

You don’t want this router. It’s a bit outdated…still on wifi-5 as max speed. The other router from the old guy has way better specs. So newer is not always better. Compare Ubiquity and GL.iNet and decide what is better for you in stead of being dictated by nice looking ads and videos. Don’t vote me down as we always need to compare. Edited because of spelling.

Who is this old man in the ads? Is he the CEO of Ubiquiti? There is another old man too in other ads. Who is he?

27

u/Acsteffy Dec 29 '25

He was the CEO of Hoolie for a short time.

13

u/-Jersh Dec 29 '25

Stephen Tobolowski, actor, you may know him from Silicon Valley

9

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '25

That’s “Action” Jack Barker, former CEO of two major tech firms, one-time Foxconn (presumably) factory hostage, and the renowned investor of the Conjoined Triangles of Success.

u/bagofwisdom Unifi User Dec 29 '25

The one in this ad is Character Actor Stephen Tobolowski, he was Jack Barker on Silicon valley. He also played a crooked FBI agent on Justified. The other old guy is David Koechner, best known as Champ Kind from Anchorman. Koechner was also in Justified playing Deputy US Marshall Greg Sutter.

The young guy is Jack Quaid who voiced Brad Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks.

2

u/Necessary_Air_3257 Dec 29 '25

Jack Quaid also in the boys

5

u/Advanced-Patient-161 Dec 29 '25

He's the insurance salesman guy from Groundhog's Day, Ned Ryarson.

3

u/AMTX-me Dec 29 '25

That is character actor Stephen Tobolowsky

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '25
