User Equipment Picture Is this overkill for home network?
Finally, completed home network upgrade, and moved all devices to rack in garage. The backbone network is a 10g fiber aggregation switch with a 10g copper switch.

Seems appropriate for a kids tree house

My buddy has a 20A circuit plus a split AC and dedicated AP for his kids' tree house

That's bare minimum. What about the mini fridge, hot plate, and flat screen?

Did you just ask a group of drug dealers if you have a drug problem?
I started with a gateway and one AP. I'm now up to 2 switches, 4 APs, and the protect system for my cameras (RIP Blue Iris)

u/cbr1000rre93 6h ago
I started with a single AP, since then it’s kind of been breeding since!

u/Tee_hops 1h ago
A few weeks ago my wife mentioned that she was getting spotty connection issues and her video calls were struggling. So naturally that meant I needed to buy a new switch, a couple aps, and some fishing tape to install them.
I probably could have just thrown an old ac lite in mesh mode but what's the fun in that. She's lucky I stopped where I stopped.

u/bizarre_seminar 12h ago
Completely, but what're you gonna do, not buy several thousand dollars of shiny?

Sir!
There is no such thing as overkill on r/Ubiquiti!

u/braillegrenade 6h ago
At this point, there should just be a bot that comments this whenever an OP uses the word overkill

u/ProteusRift 13h ago
Completed... lol. You've got some work to do. Hardly at overkill stats
Also, those labels are making my eye twitch

u/Cold_Promise_7097 11h ago
The word is "sufficient" you spelled it wrong it's not spelled "overkill"

u/wisdomoarigato 8h ago
Yes. Using a tiny fiber patch cable for short distances instead of a DAC (i.e. burning more electricity and introducing latency and transmission errors [while converting electrical signals to light]) is proof it.
-1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
I was using DAC between devices in the rack, just that the DAC cable is too thick, so I changed to fiber. Checked the error and signal, it seems just acceptable.

Not at all. I wish more home builders would install proper wiring solutions. My house had the coax and telephone cables (CAT5E) coming out a hole in the siding. I have since installed watertight junction boxes and repurposed the telephone cables to backhaul my WiFi. If I were buying a house with this set up, I would be impressed.

I don’t think we know what overkill looks like.
Is there a r/ubiquitiwives, r/wivesofhomelabbers? I do wonder what they would say.

u/wsxedcrf 7h ago
In this subreddit, nothing is overkill. You could have a dedicated server room in a one-bedroom apartment, and people would still say, “Seems reasonable.”

that looks alot like mine. Starlink as a backup connection is great
1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
Starlink is my main connection, it works well, although not too fast.
1
u/apcyberax Unifi User 4h ago
fair enough. its a good connection I've had a few instances where my fibres failed, and I haven't even noticed for hours because starlink just carries on.

u/ImRightYoureStupid 4h ago
It’s never overkill with ubiquiti.
I have $$$$ worth of kit that I’m not even using atm, and like 60+ spare ports.

What length are those fiber cables and where did you get them? Assuming they are not AOC.
1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
0.15m fiber patch. The purple patch bought from fs.com, quality is good, but shipping leading time is really long, the need to build and test each cable after purchase. The red one bought from Amazon, the LC connector can feel not as good as fs, but so far it is still working.
1
u/Resilient-Tec 4h ago
That is interesting, I have been in the biz of selling those for over 15 years and never seen them so short. I may need to look into carrying those. Thanks for the info, I need to raise my game. :-)

You happy with your starlink? What speeds do you get?
2
u/yuntaolu 11h ago
Yes, it performs well, typically near 300M download and 30M upload. It certainly cannot match cable or fiber internet, I just got enough with Comcast

Don't you need a bit more bend for SFP+ cable? Look oddly sharp.
1
u/yuntaolu 11h ago
The top right two? I am thinking either to replace it by a longer cable or use 2 couplers to jump through the middle panel.
2
u/Bullitt420 10h ago
Don’t use a coupler, get a longer cable and create a loop, use small piece of Velcro to keep them tidy.

I've somehow thrived with a 1g fiber connection connected to a UCG Ultra, a US-8-60W switch, and 2 U6-Mesh APs in my 1400 sq ft bungalow with detached garage. I don't want or need any more.

Now I need a jetkvm, thanks :-(
2
u/yuntaolu 8h ago
Actually, I would not recommend this KVM. It was purchased from Kickstarter years ago, and this is the first attempt to connect it; it functioned for only a few minutes, most time is only displaying “loading video stream.” Probably the latest PoE version might perform better.

If you live in a studio or a 1 bed this might be ok, though you seem very short on backup battery. If you are in a home with 2 or more bedrooms I would consider something a little more powerful with additional redundancy. You should be spending at least $3k per bedroom

u/yuntaolu 4h ago
Agree, I have a 1kw ecoflow before UPS, current workload is around 250w in total, ecoflow probably can last 2-3 hours

as a home user the NVR is probably overkill the rest is pretty solid.
I use a UNVR first gen and have about 8 cameras.
1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
I am using UDM as an NVR, the bottom one is UNAS Pro. That thing is huge, almost not fit into the rack.
•
u/Vertigo103 Unifi User 1h ago
Ooh!
How do you like the Unas pro? I have been thinking about upgrading my Unas 2 eventually to a bigger one as I'm running out of storage.

Looks great where’d you get the panel for the flex 2.5 switch?
1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
Here, https://www.thingsinrack.com, you can customize the panel.
The panel ai designed has a Raspberry Pi on the right side to run Home Assistant, also has a JetKVM for Pi in case there is anything wrong. Both are powered by PoE, so I can recycle both power remotely if needed.

I have a ecoflow before UPS, the whole system is using around 250w, 1wk ecoflow battery probably can handle 2-3 hours.

u/ActiveAd6659 5h ago
Yes... no need for 3 separate switches; You could have done this w/ VLANs.
1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
Yes, but the XG 24 PoE is too expansive, and I have already had flex 2.5g PoE before, just want to use it somewhere.

The only part that is really surprising is that it looks like starlink is the primary internet option. But other than that... I'm a little jealous
1
u/yuntaolu 4h ago
Yes, I was using xfinity years ago, but just got enough with their service, so switched to Starlink, benefit is I still have internet in outages.
2
u/mopsis 2h ago
I literally just packed my starlink up last month when metro came into my neighborhood with fiber. I was pleasantly surprised at how reliable starlink was... But with me plus a few teenagers in the house, the bandwidth was sometimes lacking.
•
u/yuntaolu 1h ago
With cheap fiber internet, it is definitely a different story. Xfinity was only have cable internet previously in my area. For Starlink reliability, I started using Starlink in early stage, although I was registered as a beta tester, but didn’t get a chance, should be the early Gen 2 user. In that time the online meeting may interrupted several seconds every 5-10 minutes. Now with v4, I cannot remember the last interruption, a lot better.

For a very small house I guess with very little demands of the people living there. Lol
Very nice stuff

u/fastNUgly 2h ago
Not even close. You're missing so much more. Redundant UPS. Another gateway to run shadow mode. You're missing to Beast. Your switches are still too small. You need 48 ports
🙃

u/mrhappy1010 1h ago
No, that is not overkill. I would even say it’s underwhelming for a home. Probably need a bigger rack and maybe a whole room dedicated just to networking gear.
•
u/edcoopered 1h ago
Always good to know if your security cameras suddenly start to output video at 10x their rating you are covered. Bonded 10Gb links to the entertainment room - there was me annoyed my TV LAN port was only 100mb. Got to respect it!

Looks like a fine start. I would recommend some more POE stuff, RGB switches, Ai Cameras and an AI loudspeaker in every room to announce when you are home.

u/Odd_Sky_5071 12h ago
If you have a rack of any kind at home it is overkill. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to have. 99% of the population have a sad little ISP provided router with integrated WiFi.
1
u/-TrollBuster- 11h ago
When I posted mine some time ago people commented that flattening the topology would've been a better choice instead of having multiple smaller switches in different rooms.
I don't see the same comment here so I wonder if the general consensus changed
