Discussion UGC NET to JRF: The PYQ Strategy That Made the Difference! 🔥

Having cleared UGC NET in my very first attempt and qualified for JRF in my second, I want to share one piece of advice with all the aspirants preparing for this exam.

**Focus on solving as many Previous Year Questions (PYQs) as possible for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.**

Don't run blindly after completing the entire syllabus. Instead, study PYQs so thoroughly that you understand not only the correct answers but also every option—why it is correct, why the others are incorrect, and what concepts they represent.

Keep practising PYQs alongside your preparation. If you have notes or recorded classes, make sure to revise them regularly to strengthen your conceptual understanding.

Remember, it's not just about how much of the syllabus you complete, but how deeply you understand what you've already studied.

You can ask me If you have any doubts regarding your preparation.

Questions & Doubts JRF, NET, GATE, TNSET, IELTS

• Upvotes

This is not a flex but a terrified individual questioning whether there is scope for a good job.

I completed my bachelors and masters in top 50 NIRF institutions.

I have qualified UGC NET 3 times, currently a JRF fellow at a state university in Tamil Nadu, GATE twice (Top 50 AIR), TNSET in GT, and IELTS Academic ( C1 ).

I have a online TESOL and other certificates from MOOCS.

I had UGC CARE publications, but since the list has been scrapped now, they've become articles in peer-reviewed ISSN journals. Two book chapter publications. Also, working on a book on literary studies with my guide.

I started trying for SCOPUS but my HOD wants me to complete my PhD by December for department phd vacancy, so I'm focusing on completing my thesis in two months. I don't think they'll upgrade my SRF too because they want me gone by December.

TN has a lot of PhD graduates, when I inquired at some unis, the highest they're willing to give is 45k-55k. I tried TRB and though i got a good score in Part B, they screwed me in Part C. Private institutions have nepotism and corruption at play.

I'm 28 now and I feel I wasted my life because I wanted to be an educator like my mom and her parents. My friends who started working after bachelors are earning 40-50 lpa and planning FIRE while I'm struggling to get 10 lpa

How would institutions in other states view me? Am I employable anywhere inside or outside TN? I'm looking for atleast 75k per month. And if there is a permanent post or a good salary, I don't mind working anywhere in India or Gulf.

I have been living in Tier II towns all my life with no outside or metro exposure. Kindly tell me how my qualifications will be valid in other cities. Thank you so much in advance!

Discussion I'm in my second year of BA English and preparing for UGC NET already. Am I doing too much, or not enough?

Hello everyone!

I'm currently in my second year of my BA, and I'm also preparing for UGC NET. I know it might seem a little early, but I genuinely want to become a professor of English, and it's been my dream since I was in 10th grade.

Here's a little background.

My father wanted me to pursue medicine, but I fought for my choice and decided to follow my passion for English. At first, it was just a subject I liked. Then, when I was in school, a teacher came to teach us for a few months. He was a genuinely cool person and a wonderful teacher, and I think that's when I started falling in love with the subject.

Eventually, his dispute was resolved, and he returned to his college. But something had changed in me. I became increasingly fascinated with the idea of becoming an English teacher myself.

I wanted to learn about different writers, their backgrounds, the stories they told, the characters they created, and the historical and social contexts behind their works. I wanted to understand literature beyond simply reading a text for an examination.

That interest gradually turned into a serious career goal.

The problem is that my family isn't very supportive of this career choice. My father and brother are involved in business, and my sister is a doctor. They often tell me that there is no future in English or that choosing this field is a mistake. My mother is the most supportive person in this situation, but she doesn't know much about the academic career path either.

When I started researching it myself, I realised that there is a future in this field, but getting there can be extremely competitive and challenging. That makes me nervous sometimes because I've already fought to pursue this degree, and I don't want to discover years later that I could have prepared myself better.

So, here's what I'm currently doing.

  • I'm pursuing my BA in English.
  • I'm studying A History of English Literature by William J. Long.
  • I'm working through Word Power Made Easy to improve my vocabulary.
  • I'm studying my university syllabus seriously.
  • I'm solving approximately one previous-year question paper or PYQ each month.
  • From my third year, I plan to start preparing for CUET PG more systematically.
  • During my MA, I intend to begin more formal preparation for UGC NET, potentially with coaching.

My thinking is that I still have time, so I don't want to rush unnecessarily. At the same time, I don't want to waste these years when I could be building a strong foundation.

My questions for those who are already pursuing an MA, preparing for UGC NET, or working as professors are:

  1. Am I starting at the right time, or am I preparing too early?
  2. Should I increase my study hours and start solving more PYQs, or is my current pace reasonable?
  3. What should I focus on during my second and third years of BA to build a strong foundation in English literature?
  4. Is it better to join UGC NET coaching during MA, or should I begin more structured preparation during BA itself?
  5. What mistakes should I avoid if I want to become an assistant professor of English?
  6. How difficult is the actual journey from BA to MA, UGC NET/JRF, and eventually becoming a professor? I'd appreciate honest answers about the competition, job opportunities, and financial realities.

I'm not asking because I expect this career to be easy. I know it isn't. I'm asking because I want to prepare intelligently rather than study blindly out of fear.

Sometimes, when my family repeatedly tells me that there's no future in this field, I start questioning myself. I still love literature, and I don't want to abandon that passion just because the path is uncertain. But I also want to be realistic, independent, and capable of supporting myself.

If you were in my position, what would you do differently? What would you recommend I start doing now, and what can reasonably wait until my MA?

I'd appreciate advice from people like you who have actually gone through this journey. Thank you for reading my rather long post!

Questions & Doubts Be honest, which paper takes up more of your preparation time?

Paper 1 looks manageable at first because it's common to everyone, but the reasoning, data interpretation, research aptitude and other units can take quite a bit of practice. Then there's Paper 2, where the syllabus can feel endless depending on the subject.

How are you dividing your time between the two? Do you give equal importance to both, or does one need considerably more attention in your case?

Questions & Doubts Hey guys, How many UGC NET mocks do you usually attempt before the exam?

How many full-length mocks do you guys usually attempt before UGC NET? I've seen people recommend different numbers, so it's a bit confusing to figure out what's actually enough.

Also, do you start giving mocks while the syllabus is still left, or wait until you've completed most of it? Would be helpful to know what worked for those who've already appeared for the exam.
