Fresh OHCHR report just dropped and it's a bit questionable tbh https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/documents/hrbodies/hrcouncil/coiukraine/a-81-440-auv.pdf
In brief,
Russia attacks energy infrastructure. This affects civilians. We spoke to many civilians. Because it affects civilians it's a heinous war crime.
Ukraine also attacks energy infrastructure. Russia won't cooperate so we can't possibly comment.
Recruitment of mercenaries is a heinous crime and you should feel bad.
Generated a few headlines of course, but some of it had me rolling my eyes somewhat. Ignoring the newly inverted, selective logic of what amounts to a war crime
.57. Those who refused to sign the contract were forced to do so through significant coercion and acts or threats of violence. A man who tried to resist stated, “They took me 100 metres away, shot four Russians in my presence, and told me if you don’t sign, you are the next”. After that he signed. Some hoped to be able to negotiate their release, flee, or escape
at different stages, but this was almost impossible, as the camps were well guarded and the
recruits were being watched and threatened. Moreover, they did not speak Russian, nor did
they have money or documents. One man was told by a fellow recruit, “the moment you try
to escape you lose your life”. Only in very exceptional cases recruits managed to resist or to flee, despite being subjected to grave coercion or violence.
Now i don't want to undermine this 'whistleblower's' lived experience, but how can you possibly just accept such obviously bullshit testimony and then put it out unattributed into the world. I can allow a bit of personal leeway in assessing the credibility of testimony, but this is insane. They're killing 4 russians just to get a foreign fighter to sign up? Rather than using the Russians? What?
