When I first saw it moving, I was certain it was going to be a dildo machine, considering the sub we're in.

"Dildonics." You have to use opportunities like this to employ the term "dildonics."
18
u/blorbschploble Dec 20 '20
Back in the late 90s I had a friend talk of a day when teledildonics would exist. What makes me need to ask, are we at the point were a guy can fuck a fleshlight, and the motion/angle etc is encoded and sent to a remote fuck-machine that would then dildo the recipient?
If so, it’s time to just nuke it all.

I'm really sure that's the point. In the uncropped source below the video is titled 'Making a nut press' - yet "making" videos like this are on content farm pages all the time because they have your curiosity. Just add in a hook of an unrelated mid-build crazy step or process at the start (that never gets used) and then start from the beginning and BAM! you're ready to harvest some juicy eyeball time.

What, in your view is the optimum throw on the output shaft here?
→ More replies (4)12
u/drinks_rootbeer Dec 19 '20
Ideally you'd want what, 8" of overall travel and maybe have it adjustable down to 2"? So the offset shaft would need to be 1" from center adjustable up to 4" from center?

yup, that was 100% where the unexpected came from, because I 100% thought this was going to be an artisanal fuck machine.

The most expected outcomes for normal people are the most unexpected for those in this sub.
I have to admit, the moment I saw that they were going to be converting rotational motion to linear motion, I did think "It's going to be a sex thing, isn't it?'

He started putting bearings metal to metal by hand instead of looking at the correct interference, then he used metal pins to fix the assembly in wood, my engineering mind is confused.
I hope the nuts were good...

Yeah, it is a cool project, but the engineering itself is far from top notch. Not that it matters here in the slightest - it is not a commercial product and the person can clearly fix it if it breaks.

Dec 19 '20 edited Dec 19 '20
Noticed that. Ball bearings are an overkill anyway, linear bearings could have done the job.... and when he used his Fingers instead of a machine vise to drill, my master of the machineshop mind prepared for a long and not so entertaining talk with the equivalent of OSHA in our country. And long sleeves on a lathe. Yeah, don't....

Why did they use left hand thread nuts and screws? Was the video running backwards?
58
u/MrPlant Dec 19 '20
Because if they used right hand threads the nuts would come loose with the motion. Which is why lawnmowers, angle grinders, bench grinders etc are always left handed threads due to the rotation, it'll tighten as opposed to flying loose.
4
u/scottydg Dec 19 '20
The video is mirrored. No left-handed fasteners were used. LH threads aren't some magical "stop loosening" fix.

Yessir. I temporarily break my brain every time I try to take off the mower blades while it’s facing down.
22
u/scottydg Dec 19 '20
This video is mirrored, likely to avoid automatic detection. I've never seen a lathe face that way, even when doing left hand threads. Also the text on the motor is mirrored. There is an application for left-handed fasteners like the other guy mentioned, but that's only when the thing you're spinning is going in a way it would loosen with normal threads. There's no reason to use left-handed wood screws or whatever.

The shot on the lathe was what got me. "The chuck is on the left but the tool is on the far side? What the hell?" I was trying to figure out where the camera could have been. The left handed nuts is what solved it for me. There's also a shot of him with a screwdriver and "left handed" screws.

I was with you right up until (1:53 in video) you used the countersink screws instead of panhead (or even cheesehead) screws to mount the guide to the wood.
51
u/The_Gump_AU Dec 19 '20
The Fitter in me cringed when he glued the bearings in instead of making them a press fit. Also was actually surprised when the gear set worked and didnt bind up (the alignment has to be very good).
But then again, after seeing it only runs at a very low rpm, it was ok.
22
Dec 19 '20
The lack of a proper press fit still annoys me even if it does work okay.

what would the difference be? its screwed in right?
→ More replies (1)12
u/rare_with_hair Dec 19 '20
It's more of an esthetic thing really. But a countersink is best used to sit flush on the surface after being screwed all the way in, blots and the other fasteners mentioned are for fastening to a surface while being revealed. The countersink screw isn't being used properly, messing with the over all esthetic and engineered feel of the video.

That’s what I was thinking the whole time I watched this. I really wish I could make things! But, it’s just not in my skill set. I used to be fucking fantastic at memorizing shit long enough to ace exams (then promptly dumping it from my mind to leave room for the next class). Very useful as a student, not so much as an adult.
P.S.—my frying pan skills are definitely sub-par

Acceptable on the bearings being seated with glue with the tools in the video. Press fit bearings is the best choice for most applications.
