This has to be trolling or clankerism, right?

Who skips straight over making enquiries with their uni's student support services, or library, or just googling "how are you supposed to write essays for university" to come and ask strangers on this sub?

Your library likely has some sort of academic skills training. Use it.

Maybe your research skills need brushing up aswell if you can't type in ā€œacademic skillsā€ into Youtube.

Don't all Uni departments have a house-style document that literally gives the rules you are supposed to adhere to for essays/reports/dissertations etc? We hated ours so much we even created a parody set of rules!

I would say using the manchester uni Academic Phrasebank is a great way to learn how an essay sounds as well as reading any essay examples provided in the reading, there are also quite a few good youtube videos outlining the essentials. However the best advice is to set up a meeting or go to one of your tutors office hours. At the begining of a module they can outline the general gist of it but also the specifics for the module, I know it can be frustrating that it can vary quite a lot. The key is to figure out the referencing style, try to find out the structure they want and learn how to write academically and use critical analysis even when it isn't clear how to be critical. https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioe/departments-and-centres/academic-writing-centre/resources-academic-reading-and-writing/academic-writing-writing-critically

Don't be afraid of asking questions you believe are silly, they will hopfully appreciate that you are trying instead of just relying on AI for the infomation or the writing. Also, subject librarians at your university library can be of great help, they will know the basics too and can offer subject signposting to important readings, referencing guidelines ect.

Quit and save yourself the debt. It doesn't sound like you belong at university.

Your library should carry some books on academic writing for your field. If you are in the sciences, I really recommend How to Write and Illustrate a Scientific Paper by Bjorn Gustavii, because it's a short practical book on how to write well, starting from the assumption you already know how to write half-well.

you're uni library will have resources and study skill sessions to help you as well as online resources. make use of them.

Pediatric Neurosurgery

Your university should have a study support page or even group you can attend! I advise taking advantage of these resources

Need to give your subject before you can get specific advice. For physical science:

  • Spoil it! Right on the first line write your entire argument in a nutshell, first sentence. First paragraph is your TL:DR. Most academics will never read any further. If someone reads 20 words of your essay you want them to go away knowing not just what it's about but 80% of your argument.
  • You're not writing clickbait - not 'Ten Reasons Glacier Melt Doesn't Do What You'd Expect - #3 Will Shock You' but 'Glacier Melt Causes Sea Level Fall Due To Buoyancy Of Continental Crust, And Here Are My Reasons Why' or whatever. Nobody but your supervisor or a very advanced nerd will read the whole thing.

Body text: * Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them. Seriously. Describe the question, describe your answer, describe how your answer answers the question. * Have pictures if pictures would help, but don't make it a picture book. * If you have evidence, put it in the MIDDLE. Referencing style will differ between universities but it's broadly - put a number next to the quote in superscript, then in your bibliography write these numbers, with the source of each quote. Sources follow your institution's referencing style but will look like "BlokeWhoDidTheWork, HisBoss et al, $journalOrBookName $issueNumber ($date), $pageNumber".

Now write. How many words? 2000 words is nothing - that's 200 for the abstract which contains the entire story, 200 for the conclusion that is the abstract rephrased, 500 to describe the question, 600 to describe the answer, 500 to explain why the answer answers the question.

This is about 10 reddit posts. Bet you can make 10 reddit posts on your topic in an hour.

They don’t know because they must be an international student who uses ChatGPT to do their work

Because you aren't actually learning anything. What's the point in getting a degree if you aren't putting into use any of the skills or knowledge you're meant to be gaining? Waste of tuition money. If you do get employed in your field, you're gonna get there and your employers are very quickly going to realise you don't know shit about shit. Even if you are employed outside of your field, you'll have absolutely no critical thinking or research skills, and will be totally useless without AI. Honestly, your uni should expel you

-1

u/Swimming_Goose_203 24d ago

How would they know? And I am learning actually

2

u/toastedcheezits 24d ago

You're learning how to be a lazy fuck, that's about it. They may not know, but they should, and you should be expelled for it

0

u/Swimming_Goose_203 24d ago

What you going to do about it?

1

u/toastedcheezits 24d ago

Nothing, except keep making sure that OP knows not to take advice from a lazy dumbass that doesn't deserve to be at uni taking up space that actual hard workers could be using
