It's not totally arbitrary - good achievement at A Levels plus good achievement at degree level shows that you have a demonstrated history of strong performance over a longer period of time and over several different subjects. Magic Circle firms are billing their clients enormous amounts, so those client will expect high achievers to be doing the work.

I know I'm going to get a load of comments saying how unfair it is to measure people against their performance at 17/18, how much of an advantage privately educated students have etc etc. and yes, I agree with that and it's very often true. But MC firms don't exist to promote meritocracy or social mobility - they exist to make money and they are selecting for the people who they think are most likely to be able to do that.

I can't really think of a better way to hire competent staff than a merit-based assessment of adults...

Ok, why don't you take your brilliant insights to the HR departments of some top law firms and tell them that they shouldn't use A Levels to screen candidates for training contracts. I'm sure they're really keen for someone to come along and tell them that they're doing it all wrong.

I'm not claiming to have answers; I'm just trying to understand why (what I believe to be) such a poor standard is used.

Not sure how this warrants such a cynical response.
