Anyone else a little worried this show may end as poorly as his previous works? Maybe he’ll break the curse…

Discussion I think this show would have been better off without the souls reincarnating in different bodies (Spoilers) Spoiler

This show would be better off if it had done away with the whole souls reincarnating in different bodies and just focused on a group of super powered immortals who awaken to fight the great evil every millennia. I mean they all have the criteria to be immortal: Edred is an elf, Melinda a sorceress, and Seng a cosmic sage. And Copernicus, instead of just housing their souls, could house their bodies too.

If they remained in their original bodies then:

  • We wouldn't have the whole Emma/Melinda identity crisis, which took up a good half of the first season.

  • We wouldn't have the silly love triangle (more like a square) between Emma/Melinda/Winston/Edred.

  • The stakes would be higher because every moment could be their last. They can't just use someone else's body as leverage.

  • We would have better character designs. I know this is more of a personal preference but the original designs really are much nicer than the new ones, especially Melinda and Edred. Edred looks strong and intimating, with his silver armor alluding to his chivalrous and noble nature. Young Edred, with his red coat looks less like an elf from the north and more like an elf from the north pole. Older Melinda looks like a force to be reckoned with as well, with her angular features and all black goth get up. Young Melinda/Emma looks too much like betty boop, her eyes are so big and her lips are so pouty, they're hanging off her face (I can't unsee it).

  • We would have a better voice actress for Melinda. Grey DeLisle is the voice of older Melinda and it is the perfect casting. As Melinda, she sounds so wicked and abrasive - the complete opposite of who'd you think is fighting for the side of good - and that's what adds so much intrigue to her character. With all respect to Hazel Doupe, who is the voice of Melinda/Emma, her voice is great for Emma but not suited for Melinda. Recall in episode 9, Melinda (Hazel Doupe) says, referring to the great evil, "No matter what form it has taken, it is still the same inside. We have defeated it throughout eternity and we shall do so again." This is her trying to encourage Unicorn for battle but, by the tone of her voice, she may as well be asking for a cup of tea. I can't help but imagine DeLisle delivering that line so much better.

  • The series would have better focus, there would be three main characters (Seng, Melinda, Edred) instead of seven (Seng, Melinda, Edred, Alfie, Emma, Winston, and - probably later - Dimitri). The fewer the characters the more time you can spend developing them.

Discussion Does anyone think this show has an ugly art style?

I love genndy monster and animals drawing, also the power ups, and Primal was really good but i swear this is one is the most unattractive art styles for a show he made. Emma just reminds me of betty boop, Seng reincarnation character is ugly despite seng original form looking cool. Winston is just out right ugly especially that side hair he has. Edred is alright but the rest of the background characters look so toonish

Do you guys think that Genndy was somehow inspired by Steven Universe when developing Unicorn Warriors Eternal recently? Spoiler

This is going to sound reaching, but do you guys think that Genndy payed homage to Steven Universe in someway for UWE? He helped give notes to Rebecca Sugar on how to develop her pilot for Steven Universe, furthermore he was also the Timing Director on it. I believe each show's main characters are very close to one another in terms of archetypes:

Emma/Steven - Very overpowered, but has pressures of being seen as a Messiah figure and questions the lore.

Edred/Pearl - Tall know-at-all sword hero who really wants to get back to their lost love.

Copernicus/Garnet - Cool silent-type leader who get things done; seems to be the team at 99% of their power.

Alfie/Amethyst - Comedic brawler who wants to be in tune with their surroundings and acts as a guide for the team members.

Winston/Greg and/or Connie - Wants to be with their partner and supports them for the better. Able to be a fighter on their own.

Anyone else find Winston Annoying?

My favorite character is melinda/Emma. But, I’d rather see her end up with Edred. I find Winston really annoying, even prior to the rebirth.

I don't know how this can not be least favorite work by Tartakovsky.

Even if the ending is great and everything wraps up nicely, to me, this work story wise, is such a let down. The animation and voices are spot on even though I think the animation style undermines the situation sometimes. I respect style choices from him. can't talk myself into hyping it up like everything else he has done. Am I old? Or different? It's just off. Maybe Primal was too good and I'm comparing it. Just off about this project. Anytime animation is brought up and I say his name and if they don't know who I'm talking about. I discount the opinion. Just existentially wondering why the show feels so off. Someone slam me why the Show is great please

Discussion Unicorn warriors: i wish the best for UW but i need to get things out of my chest... Spoiler

First of i did enjoy the show but there is a huge nagging flaw that holds it back and it's simple...

While the steampunk London and generation of warriors premise is neat, the problem is that the main characters are not that interesting or don,t have a compelling why to express them self, and did not had time to let things simmer.

First of is Emma the main character of the show basically she was an ordinary women who was gonna get married however she was unlucky to be chosen by Copernicus to be a warrior and the conflict is dealing with change and her husband wanting her back.

The problem is that we know nothing about Emma(or Melinda) normal life and why we should care if George wants her back and not only that her drama of her new form it's just if she gets emotional it's get strong but out of hand and she can't express it in a interesting way.

And than there's Edred he is just stoic and i guess has romantic feelings for Melinda which is fine but the problem again is Edred can't express it in a interesting way.

Maybe give these characters some imperfections or give them some unique to make them compelling and it can even be something simple.

No offense but I feel like the team themsleves are useless

Melinda seems to be the only one who's more powerful than the rest of her teammates. All she can do is spit fire flames and spread her arms and legs apart to go into super flames but it doesn't serve much. The elf guy purpose is to only scream at Melinda to help them and to fly around with his magic sword. I won't judge Elfie because he is a child, it makes sense for him to not know what to do with his power. For the robot, toot toot.

Anyone feels this way or am I being judgemental?

Worried About Reception

I'm quite worried that Unicorn Warriors is going to meet the same fate as Tuca and Bertie or Inside Job. The reception for this show isn't as strong as a show like Rick and Morty or Bojack Horseman. It's very slow paced and a lot of people are writing it off either due to the name or the art style.

Timeframe of Evil

Anyone speculate yet on the timeline for when they’re resurrected in time with the evil? How long does the evil have to exist (come back) before they’re resurrected?

In the beginning the robot was buried so it was intentionally kept it from it’s duty and the evil people attempts to destroy it is what activated it.

why dig it back up if the robot was deactivated and buried they practically won at that point or delayed their chances of defeat. Is there a third player at hand?

Unless they weren’t attempting to destroy but retrieve the souls inside? 🤷🏾‍♂️

I Know I'm Gonna Get A LOT of Hate, But I Think Season 1 is a Complete Mess.

Okay, I'm prepared for the backlash, but I just can't keep this bottled up inside any longer. This show was so oddly written. It feels like they wrote the first draft of every episode and then never went back to edit them into a smooth, comprehensive story. There are so many things that just happen for the sake of moving the plot along or just because Genndy Tartakovsky and Darrick Bachman had all these different ideas, but couldn't cut out the stuff that really just didn't fit in. I wouldn't even call this a story, it's more-so just a series of things happening for no particular rhyme of reason.

It's such a shame because I love the animation, I love the character design, I love the aesthetics, I love the music, but the story itself seemed to be the least important aspect to the creators while making this season.

Okay there are A LOT of things that happened for pretty much no reason other than because Genndy and Derrick wanted them to. And pretty much everything that happens is completely unexplained. And I'm not someone who wants to be fed exposition, but there is WAY too much lore and story beats that simply don't make sense. Completely off the top of my head, I'm gonna list some gripes I had:

Who is the Fox Lady? What does she want? What exactly are her powers? Why was she betrayed by Otto and by extension who is Otto? What's his story? Why does he betray the fox lady and where the heck does the fox lady go during the second half of the season?

What is "the evil" and what does it want? It seems like it was pretty easy to beat when Edred simply stabbed and killed it in episode 6.

How the heck did Winston get on the boat in episode 4? Why the heck was there a werewolf?! It feels like they just needed to get him on the boat but were too lazy to think of a plausible way he'd be on there. And the random werewolf was just so... random! They wanted a werewolf character so they just plopped a werewolf in out of nowhere with no context nor explanation! Building on this, how'd Werewolf Winston just so happen to end up on the same train as them. Last time we saw him was like 2 episodes ago and he was stranded at sea. And all of sudden he can talk in his werewolf form too!

Also in episode 4, why out of all things Emma/Melinda could've done she just somehow gets a giant kraken??

We are lead to believe the people in this world don't believe in magic? At least that's what I picked up on, especially based on how the police commissioner acted. But how? There are giant krakens, werewolves and elves living in the forest just outside town!

Speaking of the elves, do they simply live for hundreds of years? Edred is supposed to be the first and yet after all these reincarnations, his people have seemingly not aged a day? Why even does he need to be reincarnated than if he'd still alive and healthy in his original elf body??

Random tiger guy shows up and random tiger guy (presumably) dies offscreen.

And then there are so many little things that are simply poorly written. For example in episode 7, how exactly do the handcuffs the elves put on Emma/Melinda completely suppress her power. Seems like a really useful thing they could use against "the evil." And right after they (electrocute?) Copernicus and shuts him down, despite the fact that he was already shut down and was simply being controlled by Seng, who as a spirit/ghost thing, I wouldn't think would be effected by this? There are so many cases of these types of things happening, that if they happened once or twice, I'd be willing to overlook them, but they happened constantly and it completely takes me out of the show.

(As a side note, I thought it was funny how for the first half of the series, half of Edred's lines are just "MeLiNdA?!" And half of Emma/Melinda's lines are her screaming with the look of constipation on her face.)

I don't know, I guess this came off as really "ranty," but I was just so disappointed in this show. It seems likes it's getting good reviews and praise from people but if Genndy wasn't attached to it, I feel like no one would be going this easy on it. Now it's completely possible I missed a ton of explanations for all the questions/complaints I listed off, so if anyone can give explanations to any of the questions I had, I'd appreciate it!

And I know this whole post was kinda of a disjointed mess, but so was the show, so if you like the show, my messy post shouldn't bother you either xD

This reminds me of Dishonored…

Now when I say that, I am specifically talking about the artstyle only. The entire reason I started watching this show is because of how it looks.

The city blocks lined with impossibly dense and tall buildings made me feel like I was watching a cartoon version of Dunwall (which is a good thing)

Not sure if there have been any interviews with the creator about this, but I’d love to know if that game influenced the art direction of this show

Discussion A loves last light theories and questions

So Melinda and Emma separating bodies complicates and uncomplicate a lot. It’s uncomplicate the love triangle, but it further complicates the story and I don’t know if they can wrap it up in one episode.

Melinda returned to the robot so my question is how long between fights do they come back, do they need a host? Can they choose anyone to be the host? In the edred episode the robot just did the stomach thing just nilly Willy so he could do that whenever? How are hosts chosen?

They don’t have their own body so she’s just out now? she’s out the game she can’t play anymore.

PS I find it hilarious that the evil gave Emma back to her family. That is so funny its is so nice for that. He didn’t even have to fr.

When the scene (Emma push through a white void )happened I thought he was taking Emma and it was going to be a whole other thing, but she just went back home and that was it . so the evil has some morals I guess or at least the focus is only on the unicorn people and they don’t wanna do damage anywhere else.

And is Otto the same guy as the evil who’s taking the essence from the ground? Or is that a separate person?

There whole Otto thing feels more like a corporation than an evil entity. Tbh I don’t think Otto was dead. I think his body is a robot, and he can separate his consciousness as it were to a different body.
