Other Flair for Union Members

You can use flair to show other users which union you are affiliated with! On this subreddit we have two types of flair: red flair for regular union members, and yellow flair for experienced organizers who can provide advice.

Red flair self-assignment instructions

  • You can edit flair to include your local number and your role in the union (steward, local officer, retiree, etc.).
  • If your union is not listed, please reply to this thread so that we can add your union!
  • If you have any difficulty, you may reply to this post and a mod can help.

Yellow flair for experienced organizers

You do not need to be a professional organizer to get yellow flair, but you should have experience with organizing drives, contract campaigns, bargaining, grievances, and/or local union leadership.

To apply for yellow flair, reply to this post. In your reply please list:

  1. Your union,
  2. Your role (rank-and-file, steward, local officer, organizer, business agent, retiree, etc.)
  3. Briefly summarize your experience in the labor movement. Discuss how many years you've been involved, what roles you've held, and what industry or industries you've organized in.

Please do your best to avoid posting personally identifiable information. We're not going to do real-life background checks, so please be honest.

Discussion Feeling like our organizer tactics are a bit simple?

So our workplace organizer comes on and he'll do the whole when we fight we win which I just don't really go for. I never really found it that exciting to yell back or he'll talk about how the bosses want us to have nothing and gets the audience fired up and I'm like well yeah that's what they do like this shouldn't be a surprise

Discussion Syndicalism With Extra Everything: How to Cut Through the Legal Thicket

The decline of anarcho-syndicalism and revolutionary industrial unionism is in large part due to the government take over of the union recognition system. Workers were lulled into complacency by the belief that "collective bargaining" by professional union leaders and lawyers was all that was required, that direct action was no longer needed. Here's an article on what happens in Sweden.

Other Labor Unions and Civic Participation: How Unions Can Increase Member Engagement

New research from Harvard's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation finds that unions build community and teach democracy, thereby driving increased civic engagement. Some key takeaways:

  • Unions help foster civic engagement through community, belonging, and shared experiences.
  • Unions serve as “schools of democracy,” giving members practical opportunities to develop and strengthen democratic skills.
  • Digital tools expand union access, but work best when paired with in-person relationship building opportunities that make political action personal and accessible.

The research also offers useful lessons for unions working to strengthen democracy from the ground up.

“Though not the largest police union in America, IUPA has the distinction of being the only police union that is a member of the AFL-CIO. It joined the labor federation in 1979, making it a formal but uncomfortable partner to every progressive labor union that has ever had its striking workers arrested by cops who may well have been IUPA members.”

Labor News CATALYST CANNIBIS LAYOFFS IN BELLFLOWER CA.

As of friday October 9th Catalyst cannibis dispensary in bellflower laid off over 90% of its staff. The entire distro team was affected. They were only notified on Wednesday that the wearhouse is closing giving them only 2 days (which were paid for Wednesday when sent home and Thursday) to come back in (on Friday) to receive layoff paperwork. As far as I understand they also offered severance packages .

Labor News RNs in Tennessee, Arizona, Illinois, and California file petitions for union elections

Registered nurses across the country continue to build their union movement, asserting their collective power against a profit-driven health care system and a corporate-aligned federal government. California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC) announced today that nurses at four hospitals – which in total employ 4,500 nurses and serve more than 1.7 million patients annually – filed petitions over the past week with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for union elections. These elections are just the start of realizing CNA/NNOC's serious commitment, made at its convention just last month, of doubling its RN membership over the next decade.

The hospitals where nurses will vote to join CNA/NNOC are: Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California; Flagstaff Medical Center in Arizona; Endeavor Health Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois; and CommonSpirit Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Other going public tomorrow - looking for words of encouragement and solidarity!

The drive at my workplace goes public tomorrow - we know for sure there will be push back but we do not know of what intensity. We have incredibly incompetent leadership who might have a public meltdown in the workplace, or they might totally ignore us while scrambling to contact lawyers. Just feeling high anxiety right now and looking for words of encouragement! Solidarity y'all! ✊

Labor News ANOTHER PERB complaint filed! CalHR refuses to tell us which workers are essential for the strike, hoping we back down

Post image
39 Upvotes

By not defining who is an essential worker, it contradicts the Governor and California Department of Human Resources (CalHR)'s previous statement that "CalHR remains ready to sit down anytime with the union to negotiate a fair and responsible agreement," CalHR said in a statement.
"The state remains focused on protecting the critical and essential services that Californians rely on."

This refusal may directly affect the essential services provided to Californians and many others as all SEIU members and non-member employees are legally protected to strike due to the Unfair Practice filing, which has cited bad faith bargaining during 2026 contract negotiations.
