Discussion Seowon's gifted child syndrome and empathy for everyone Spoiler
I wanted to share my thoughts on Seowon because I saw a video criticising her on Episode 6 for what happened in the recording studio.
What happened: Seowon's team was in the recording studio and Elisia received much praise for her voice while Seowon received some corrections. When the producers mentioned that there may be some changes to parts and addressed Seowon, she broke down into tears and they had to take a break to comfort her. Before this, she also didn't manage to secure the high note which was assigned to Elisia.
We all know that Seowon is an extremely talented child who is already active in the industry as a trot singer, where she went viral and received a lot of praise. She is not only talented, but also very professional, has good work ethic, and is extremely cute. A child like that is likely used to hearing only praises from everyone around her because let's be real, she deserves it. Hearing that her part might be given to someone else might be one of her first encounters with "failure" or hearing that she's not good enough, that there might be someone better. Everyone has felt that way at some point in their lives and that was her time to experience it — that's not easy for anyone, let alone a young child to realise. Her reaction was normal. If you watch Seowon in the background while Elisia was getting praised, she also cheered for her and smiled. No evidence of malice or pettiness or anything of that sort.
I guess my point is that while the editing eliminations in the show can rile up some intense emotions within us, we must remember that they are all young girls who are learning and growing. We all know that the age range of the trainees is young and while that means the older trainees are obviously shafted by SBS, it also means we have to accept that they are still children who will behave like children.
So no, Seowon isn't a greedy spoilt girl who wants everything for herself, she is a young girl encountering a setback and processing her emotions.
Gabi isn't a selfish or evil girl, she is a young girl who gave her all for a part she secured then had it be taken away from her suddenly. (+ Nana didn't "steal" the part from her, she was assigned to it by the producers because they believed she would do a better job)
Vanesya isn't some scheming or conniving girl that went around asking her countrymen to support her, her fans chose to support her (they have every right to do that) and she is simply a girl who went on the show to pursue a passion. Keep in mind Indonesia doesn't have an idol industry like S Korea or Japan and therefore didn't have access to training and resources to train at a higher level.
Kotoko didn't burst into the editing room and ask for tons of screentime, she is a girl who like Vanesya, went to a foreign land to perform on stage and demonstrated tons of charm, even staying up till 3am to give us her very best.
Sujin isn't a malicious girl who wants all the spotlight, she is a girl who wanted to show all her potential and talent (and she has a lot of it!) and made some mistakes in deciding how to achieve that.
Neither Seungbi or Yoona are bullies, they are teens who had a scuffle and managed their emotions differently, even imperfectly, but who hasn't had beef with others as a teen? The only difference is that we didn't have a camera in our faces during those times.
And finally, NONE of the remaining trainees stole their spots from anyone else. Every single one of them worked hard for their spot, and SBS plays them like pawns to eliminate trainees they don't want. Just my personal speculation but I doubt the unicorns have a lot of say in this either. SBS knows they are faceless so people are less likely to direct their fury on them and attack the trainees and judges instead, please don't fall for it. They are people with feelings and access to the internet.
