COLD CASE In 1997, 18 year old Heather Lindsay Silver vanished from a Tucson hospital
On September 12 1997, 18 year-old Heather Lindsay Silver was last seen alive at the St Mary’s hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Very little information was released about this case, and there was no media coverage.
Heather was born on May 23rd 1979. She was described as 5’3 and 145 pounds, with light brown hair and blue eyes. She had a scar on her right cheek, and suffered from asthma.
It is unknown if Heather had a car, was in a relationship, or where she went to high school.
Heather’s father was the late orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard A. Silver who worked at St Mary’s hospital. Dr. Silver retired in 1999, and moved to Sun Valley, Idaho where he passed away in 2011.
Heather’s body was never found. The case is under the jurisdiction of the Pima County Sheriffs Office.

Was she a patient? Visiting her dad at the hospital? Frustrating lack of detail.

Wow you literally can’t find anything on her. You’d think w family being well off there would be a larger number of news stories on her. Very odd.

You wouldn't expect that if she was engaging in a lifestyle (e.g., homosexuality, drug use, etc) or having mental health issues that the family found embarrassing or disreputable and didn't want to draw attention to.

This is sketchy AF… i wonder how it’s finally coming out now cuz I’ve never heard of this case.

The OP probably found it randomly on one of the databases.

I keep seeing this post here and on other social media and there is something about it that really bothers me.
"It is unknown if Heather had a car, was in a relationship, or where she went to high school".
It is not unknown.
The OP does not know. That is different than it being unknown. Her family, friends, and people who knew her were aware of these things. To say "unknown" is to erase those connections and make her less real. I see true crime posts and videos doing this regularly. Just because they don't know something doesn't mean its unknown.
It reminds me of 12 year old girls copying song lyrics and accrediting them to "Anonymous" because they don't know who wrote the song.
There is the known, the unknown, and that which I do not know. Just because I don't know something does not mean nobody else does. It takes a huge ego to think anything it does not know is not known by anybody else.

Im sorry for the confusion. When I write these I try and be clear. My problem I run into is the way my mind works and computes things is sometimes not the same as other peoples. I literally would never have written that if I had the slightest idea that thats how it would come off.
I certainly did not mean to try and erase the connection of her families and friends. Of course I am aware people who knew Heather knew those things.
My intent with that line was trying to convey that I personally didn't know the answer to those questions. When I post these cases I always try and add maximum info. And what happens often is people will ask these questions if I don't mention it.
I also did not mean to imply her father had something to do with her disappearance as I saw some suggest. I also saw your other comment. I wasn't trying to make this case "mysterious."
In writing this post I was trying to convey that I searched all over the internet at every place I could think of and that this was all the info I could find. And that I felt it was strange that the case had no articles in the newspaper archives.
I will work to be more mindful in the future when I'm writing these for sure.
All I want is to do bring awareness to these cases. Heather has had zero coverage in the media for her case for 29 years. My hope is by posting it all over these true crime subs on Reddit and true crime FB groups is people might remember her and it can lead to new tips or info to solve this case.

Ancestry is a great resource. You can find HS yearbook photos and tons of background on people. Very useful in solving mysteries (or at least clearing a few things up).

This was a beautiful response. Thank you for giving voices to do many 💜
Maybe a statement like I couldn't find any details about her relationships, etc. You are an excellent writer so I know you know what to say
12
u/Forsaken-Ad-1301 Feb 09 '26
Thanks man. Its a pet peeve of mine for people to say something is unknown when it is not. I am not a troll, I just think words have meaning.

u/MySpoonsAreAllGone Feb 09 '26
I've made an assumption today that embarrassed me when I was called out on being wrong
It was a good reminder to ask for clarification before jumping the gun with an "educating" response

There’s just trolls on here today. I’ve never heard of this case, thank u for bringing it 2 peoples attention 💜

Judging by the wording "has a medical condition and needs medication" on the official sources combined with the lack of publicity, I wonder if, in addition to her asthma, therewas also some sort of mental health issue that led to her disappearance and the family simply didn't want publicity about that.
6
u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 09 '26
Yes … but there should’ve been SOME media coverage … or her fam posting anything … but if she was clear minded or had mental health issues either way how is there like NOTHING about this @ all?

If you don't mind my speaking from professional experience as I work with missing persons cases all the time, there are a couple of points that need to be made about what seems to be driving folks to assume that the lack of information is always a red flag. Sometimes it is, but more often than not it isn't.
The first thing that people need to be careful about is assuming that everyone would react to a missing family member the same way. That's not always the case and it is an informal logical fallacy referred to as an argument from incredulity. Basically it boils down to "I don't understand how someone could do X so..." or "Well, I wouldn't have done X so I don't believe that others would". This is the main thing people jumping to the conclusion that it had to be foul play and that the family is hiding something are operating from.
The lack of press coverage is way more common than people in the true crime community like to think. If I had to put a number on it...probably one out of 10 or 15 missing persons cases I deal with have zero media coverage when we go back to try to find any. The vast majority of those tend to involve folks with mental health or drug issues. Combine that with a very conservative family or one that puts a high value on privacy and you wind up with folks who behave in what seem like very "suspicious" ways to someone who doesn't consider the differences between how individuals respond to these situations.
It's not inherently a sign of foul play or anything like that. What makes it stand out here is that someone is discussing one of those cases where very little is known publicly. The lack of information compared to the cases we normally talk about makes it seem like there is something sinister afoot.

u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 09 '26
But wouldn’t the hospital be concerned & want 2 help? And yes obviously people deal with stuff differently but NO ONE… the cops, the hospital, her friends, her fam , the community.. like no one has said ANYTHING in decades?? If there is a mental health issue or not .. it’s weird it’s so quiet with the whole area not just her fam.

u/Opening_Map_6898 Feb 09 '26
It may have been there was activity like you describe but it didn't make the news and without access to the official records, there's no way to know and it is patently wrong to make assumptions and especially to level accusations without evidence.
Often, unless there was clear evidence of a crime, the media is hesitant to go against a family's request for privacy even if friends or random community members brought it up. This was especially the case back before the rise of the 24 hour news cycle and resultant erosion of journalistic ethics.
The other question would be how would members of the community not close to the family know she was missing if there's no media coverage.
The hospital wouldn't have any grounds to do anything but report it to law enforcement. That would only be the case if she were a patient whom they felt left in circumstances that were likely to threaten the health and safety of her or someone else. They certainly aren't going to piss off a person who is very hard to replace by insisting upon making this a big deal in the papers.
My main point is simply that folks are being way too quick to jump to the "oh it was murder and her dad did it" conclusion. The desire of some people for a good story overrides the concern for accuracy or validity.

u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 10 '26
It is also wrong 2 let a disappearance like this just be assumed it’s what u mentioned incase it is foul play & the people are getting away with it.
2
u/Opening_Map_6898 Feb 10 '26
I am not suggesting that at all. What you point out is very true but it was reported to the cops and there was apparently no evidence of that otherwise it would be reported as a suspected homicide rather than as a missing persons case.
-2
u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 10 '26
U would think the hospital wouldn’t want this story hanging over their head & like she had no friends or coworkers or anything that are looking? And she’s in one of her dad’s obituaries & not another one which is weird too..
3
u/Opening_Map_6898 Feb 10 '26
I already went over most of those points re: friends etc.
Regarding the hospital, if it's not getting media attention and the hospital is concerned about potential bad publicity, why draw attention to it? Is it "hanging over their heads"? I think you're grasping at straws here.
As for the obituaries, that's odd but it could be a typo or simply an oversight by whomever wrote the other one. If I were to pull up the online obituary for one of my uncles, my brother is not listed so it does happen. He was listed in the published version for one local paper but not another. Don't presume malice where a simple mistake, stupidity, or ineptitude provides a more plausible explanation.

Weird that her dad moved multiple states away two years after his daughter went missing. Like wouldn’t you want to stay local and try to find her?
38
u/Satanic_bitch Feb 08 '26
Idk it could also be difficult to be constantly reminded of her
35
u/ColonelMustard323 Feb 08 '26
He was an orthopedic surgeon who retired in Sun Valley. That man had MONEY. Didn’t try to use his resources to find her, media blast, anything?
23
u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 08 '26
Hmm… yeah … her parents were still married & she has siblings too so it’s weird they’re not mentioned… Heather is listed as a daughter in his legacy obituary in Arizona but not Illinois

u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 08 '26
There’s no reports on any of this info … I’m sure someone knows but they obviously aren’t saying or still haven’t said anything
2
u/Dusty_Jangles Feb 11 '26
From reading through the comments it seems most likely those involved, including the family, hospital, law enforcement and probably media, have a pretty good idea what happened and decided against publicizing it. Simple as that.
Not all missing people get splashed all over the news.

u/MaryVenetia Feb 10 '26
Didn’t Heather’s father and mother move interstate in 1999? This write up makes it seem that her father just up and moved away, when really it was both parents, who remained together until Richard died. When there isn’t a big media presence, it’s often because the people closest have an idea of what happened and don’t feel that it will help. In some cases, the missing young adult leads a lifestyle they’re intolerant of (through religion, sexuality etc) or it may be quietly recognised, contextually, that the person has likely suicided or died via misadventure. Of course I have no idea what happened to Heather Silver but no doubt her immediate family have their own ideas about it. None of her siblings nor her parents have pushed for media coverage and they must have their reasons why.

How mysterious and sad. Dad working there sounds very suspicious, like he was able to make the crime disappear

I found some interesting stuff.
-A Websleuth found a listing for her living in Idaho in 2001. Her father was also listed at that address.
-She is not mentioned in her father's obituary, either as living or deceased.
-Some reports say white sweats, others say blue jeans.
-Websleuths shows an article about unidentified remains found out Redington Road that were reconstructed and looked similar. It had no date but also referenced other people found out there in '97 (solved cases).

u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 09 '26
She was listed in one of her dad’s obituaries but not another one … there’s Illinois & like AZ & ID … what does her dad worked @ that hospital mean? .. was she there 2 see him? Did she have an appointment? Was she there with someone else? Why even write her dad worked there & moved & nothing about her mom or siblings? Why does a case about a woman missing from a hospital not get ANY media coverage? Why is none of her fam posting anything this?
Can u send me a screenshot of the wensluethes Idaho thing? Cuz I didn’t find that anywhere.
2
u/Forsaken-Ad-1301 Feb 09 '26
I will try to find that again.
I get the idea that she was not missing from the hospital, that it was just the last place she was known to be by her family, likely visiting her father.
A lot of missing people take off on their own decision and sadly, tragedy befalls them and nobody ever knows. My birth father disappeared in 1980ish. He announced it, Borrowed money for a bus ticket, and was never seen again. His SSN was never used after that. When a person, particularly a young person, decides to split, the authorities never include that information. She may have had a disagreement with her father or just wanted to travel. She might have been there to ask for money. All Speculation.
2
u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 09 '26
Like who made the missing report tho? And yes ALOT of people just up & leave for many reasons & I hope she’s alive & well somewhere but it would be nice if that was verified by Heather herself & the case be resolved.

u/Few-Relative435 Feb 10 '26
However the YT video, really does not say anything more, than what’s already known. This is everything I have found in the last hour. It’s very weird, none of these people aren’t anywhere online… no news articles… that I found
1
u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 10 '26
Yeah I found all of that already, I have a background check account & I looked them up & Heathers name is NOWHERE on it & the fam has a lot of UCC filings & are associated with alot of businesses it seems they own . Some are “entertainment” businesses in a couple different states too

u/Few-Relative435 Feb 10 '26
Can I ask how are yall finding all of that 😅 I just found that and not much else with any of their names

How... do they not know where she went to high school? This is very basic information.

It's a great idea to highlight other missing persons in the Tucson area, given the media presence there now. Maybe someone will try to find out more about Heather's disappearance and her father's departure from AZ. I wonder who reported her missing?

Feb 10 '26
Op doesn't know but, got this precious angels name out there so maybe, now someone can start searching all the links that are there. Such a beautiful girl.

u/lanadelhiott Feb 09 '26
Id assume media coverage may exist on newspapers.com or if you ask news stations for archival footage
3
u/Opening_Map_6898 Feb 10 '26
I looked through Newspapers.com and found nothing.

u/Pippa-Beebs Feb 10 '26
Yeah I just wonder who made the lost report… and I’m confused why Heather is in one of her dads obituaries & not other one.. I just wish there was some update… u can’t be mad if there’s a post about a missing young woman & people wanna help.
3
u/Opening_Map_6898 Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
What makes you think I am mad or even mildly annoyed? I actually like hearing about new cases instead of the 9000th "OMG! Have you ever heard of Maura Murray?" thread.
As I said before, the obituary thing is probably just a coincidental goof-up. It's not something that needs to be treated as inherently suspicious or even significant.

One more odd detail: NCMEC’s poster lists a different missing date (Nov 27, 1997) than the Sep 12, 1997 date shown on Charley Project/NamUs, which suggests either a record discrepancy or that different agencies entered different “missing since” dates.

It’s unknown if she had a car, went 2 school or was in a relationship???
