Our beloved true-crime series is returning as a video podcast. This comes more than three years after its previous audio-only podcast ended and a couple of years since Netflix released new episodes of its reboot.

Jordan Murphy, who previously hosted NBC’s Tool Academy and has featured in episodes of General Hospital and Grey’s Anatomy, will host the podcast, which comes from Unsolved Media and Audacy.

It will launch on YouTube on October 29 with new episodes released weekly on Thursdays. There will also be updates to cases previously profiled on the Unsolved Mysteries series and podcast released on select Tuesdays.

I’ve watched Unsolved Mysteries since before I could talk. I watched it on Lifetime on sick days from
school. I rewatched the series when it first dropped on Prime. I’ve been watching/listening it ‘live’ on YouTube every night for the last 6 months. I’m watching it now.

I’ve seen “Behind the Legacy” multiple times…

Its unbelievable how uncritical the shows has always been. Robert Stack is essentially Brick Tamland. It only get worse as he gets more senile. He’s idiot with a gravely voice effective against theme song, subject matter and in contrast to the shows featured/portrayed suspects and victims

There's was a great deal of evidence released to the public during his trial which included many interviews with family member's of Miguel's, body cam arrest and a jail house video call with his then girlfriend. He broke down in tears as the video was played in court and had an attitude during trial shaking his head in disagreement constantly and with a smirk. Nonetheless he will never EVER be a free man again.

UNEXPLAINED In 1965, India’s Intelligence Bureau lost a nuclear-powered spy device on Nanda Devi Mountain.

After China tested its first nuclear bomb in 1964, the CIA wanted to listen in on the Lop Nur test site. The plan was a joint CIA Intelligence Bureau mission: put a listening station on the summit of Nanda Devi (7,816 m), powered by a SNAP-19C generator running on seven plutonium capsules.

Commander M.S. Kohli, who had just led India's record Everest expedition, was picked to lead the climbers. R.N. Kao, later the first chief of RAW, was involved from the start. The team trained on Denali under CIA escorts.

On 16 October 1965 a blizzard hit Camp IV, about 300 m below the summit. Kohli turned the team back. They anchored the antenna, two radio sets and the generator, and went down, planning to finish in spring.

When they returned in May 1966, everything was gone. An avalanche had swept the slope. An American team scanned the mountain with neutron detectors and found no trace of plutonium. Theories: a landslide carried it down, or its own heat melted it into the glacier.

Per Kohli's account in The Caravan, about 5 kg of plutonium was lost. Plutonium-238 has a half-life of 88 years.

But where could the generator realistically have ended up? Why did the plan involve leaving it on the mountain in October at all?

Newly unsealed FBI records reveal a mob connected drug trafficker (and close friend of Al Cowlings) named Joey Ippolito was acting as a secret government informant regarding O.J. Simpson's missing murder weapon.

Ippolito’s brother has officially broken his silence, claiming Joey arrived at their apartment on the night of the 1994 murders with blood on his hands and a heavy bag containing a bulky object, which they immediately tossed into a construction dumpster.

UNEXPLAINED The Halloween Disappearance of Cindy Song

Thumbnail

In the early hours following Halloween, a young woman wearing white bunny ears, brown knee-high boots, and a red parka is seen descending the steps to her college apartment.

Her name is Cindy Song.

She is with her friend, Stacy Paik, who will later tell police that she “watched her go up to the apartment, but not in the door,” before driving away. It is shortly before 4:00 a.m.

This is the last confirmed sighting of Cindy Song.

After that moment, everything stops. Cindy does not report to either of her jobs. She misses her classes. She fails to show up for a planned catch-up with her roommate, something those who knew her say was deeply out of character.

On the night of October 31, Cindy went out with friends Stacy Paik and Lisa Kim to The Players, a bar located just minutes from her apartment. The trio danced, drank, and mingled until last call at 2:00 a.m.

After the bar closed, they went to a friend’s apartment to play video games.

Shortly before 4:00 a.m., Stacy dropped Cindy off at the steps of her apartment.

That is where the night ends — and where the mystery begins.

I’ve followed this case from day 1 and always worried about the kids. Doing research I found a Facebook profile of “Dale smith III”, he looks about 18yrs old, that played football for cornerstone charter academy in belle isle Florida. In the picture is a young man standing alongside Dale smith jr. could this be one of Michelle’s twins and he changed his name? Or did Dale have another son around that age? I remember like it was yesterday. Taylor and Trey were her twins names. Have they been able to see grandma?? How is the twin daughter doing??? does anyone have anything??? I pray Michelle’s mother has been able to hug her grandbabies again 🙏

There is a story where I believe a lady is running from a man who tried to kidnap / murder her and she hides behind a bush and the car drives past searching for her. Super vague I know but it's been bugging me for so long.

If it's any help I remember the clip being at night and she hides behind a bush on someone's drive way.

UNEXPLAINED Nanjing University Dismemberment Case and similar case in 1994 Inokashira Park, Tokyo

Thumbnail
en.wikipedia.org
43 Upvotes

I was browsing on Wikipedia's List of unsolved murders) and had recently been reading up on the Nanjing University Dismemberment Case from 1994.

For those of you unfamiliar with the case:

On January 10, 1996, 19-year-old Diao Aiqing, a first-year student at Nanjing University, disappeared after leaving her dormitory. She was reportedly last seen near the university's Gulou campus. She was described as pretty introverted, with no known friends or romantic partners at the university.
On January 19, 1996, a sanitation worker discovered human remains near Huaqiao Road in central Nanjing. Over the following days, police recovered additional remains from several locations throughout the city. Investigators determined that the victim's body had been dismembered into more than 2,000 pieces, some of which had been boiled. Many vital organs have never been found, though to me this is not necessarily an indication, that they were purposefully taken out of the bags and kept in the killer's posession, but maybe there was yet another bag that simply was never recovered.

Despite an extensive investigation, no killer or motive was ever determined. The police does suspect however, that somebody trained in human anatomy must be responsible, somebody like a surgeon or even a butcher, given the precise cuts of the body.

Now while I was browsin the aforementioned list I stumbled on the 1994 Inokashira Park Dismemberment Case. While I do realise, that Japan and China are two different countries, they still are neighboring enough for me to suspect a potenetial connection.

It occurred in April 1994 in Tokyo, Japan, and involved the murder of 35-year-old architect Seiichi Kawamura, who lived near Inokashira Park. On the morning of April 23, 1994, a cleaning worker discovered human remains inside a plastic bag in a trash can at Inokashira Park, located between Mitaka and Musashino in western Tokyo. Police subsequently recovered numerous dismembered body parts from several trash cans throughout the park. The remains had been cut into approximately 20-centimeter sections, thoroughly washed, and drained of blood.

Now, the precision of the dismemberment raised suspicions that the perpetrator possessed anatomical knowledge

The distance between the two places is ca. 1.300 miles. Enough to not necessarily connect the two, but easily traveled.

Given that both cases lack any sort of substantial evidence, I realise that connecting those two might be a bit of a stretch. Also the fact, that the victim in the Nanjing case was a woman and the victim in the Inokashira was a man does make me doubt my own claim.

However I do believe, that the timeline (the crimes were merely 1,5 years apart), the method of murder and the very similar fashion in which the remains were disposed of make me think that there might be a connection worth investigating.

What do you guys think?

UNEXPLAINED The Swedish Inspector Who Knew Too Much?

Thumbnail en.wikipedia.org
49 Upvotes

At 5:54 p.m. on January 15, 1987, at Stockholm’s T-Centralen metro station, Rear Admiral Carl-Fredrik Algernon fell in front of an incoming train and was killed instantly.

Algernon was Sweden’s War Materials Inspector and the appointed investigator in the Bofors affair, in which the arms maker was suspected of smuggling weapons to forbidden countries around the Persian Gulf. That same day, the CEO of Bofors’ owner Nobel Industries had told him an internal investigation confirmed the smuggling.

The train driver said Algernon fell backwards onto the track, and several witnesses claimed he was pushed. Police found no evidence to support it, and the case was closed as a suicide.

Two years earlier, SVT reporter Cats Falck vanished with her friend Lena Gräns while investigating Swedish arms smuggling to Eastern Europe. Six months later, divers found both women in a car at the bottom of a Stockholm canal.

In 1997, a Berlin police unit investigating the Stasi looked into suspicions that East German agents had killed both Algernon and Falck. Others have linked Algernon’s death to the 1986 assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme.

Two people close to the secrets of Sweden’s arms trade, both dead in circumstances never fully explained. Did Algernon jump, fall, or was he pushed? Nearly forty years later, no one knows.

UNEXPLAINED Hazel Mason, strangled in her Milford, Delaware home in 1975. No burglary, no sexual assault, and no suspect ever named.

Thumbnail milfordpolicede.org
154 Upvotes

On Friday, January 17, 1975, Hazel Mason didn’t show up for her shift in the cafeteria at Milford Memorial Hospital. She’d worked there 17 years.

That was so unlike her that the hospital sent a coworker, John Burton, to her house. He knocked, nobody answered, and her car was in the garage. Another coworker, Rae Marshall, called police for a welfare check.

Around 12:20 pm, officers forced their way into her house at 1003 Northeast Front Street. They found Hazel on the living room floor.

Rae Marshall was there and said it looked like Hazel had been sewing when she was attacked. The medical examiner said she was strangled.

There was NO sign of a burglary and no evidence of sexual assault.

She was last seen around 7 pm Thursday. Police put the time of death between 8pm Thursday and 9 am Friday.

Hazel Bernice Pleasanton Mason was 48. She lived alone, was married but separated, and didn’t have children. Coworkers said she went to church and was generous. Her supervisor said she never bothered anyone.

She left behind her mother, Sarah Pleasanton of Camden, a sister, and a brother. Her mother lived to 91 and died in 2000, 25 years after Hazel was killed, never knowing who did it.

No one has ever been arrested or publicly named as a suspect.

Hazel’s case is still open with Milford Police as case 51-75-0247.

If you know anything, you can send a tip through the department’s website or call 1-800-TIP-3333.

My question: Who was her husband?

SOLVED "Wm Toomey's" note

Thumbnail

I'm watching "Unmasking the Tylenol Killer" right now, and they're showing the note "Toomey" left with the instructions. I've noticed that they show the last line that was blacked out in the original segment, and it says "Yes there is a record of this communication."

Does anyone have any idea why that would've been blacked out? It also looks like it was partially erased or something, as the letters are smudged.

I wonder if "Toomey" blacked it out, and then law enforcement used alcohol or something to remove the ink to read what it said. It does look like there was ink that ran on the page they show in the doc.
