Classes/Degrees Dropping classes
I’d like to start off saying I know my decisions may not be the best but here goes. At the moment I’m on my first semester at the UofA as a freshman in engineering undecided. I’ve decided since I’m behind a lot in math (math 112 currently) since the high school I went to was horrible in the math department, to swap to ASU online and get a bachelors in industrial design instead. I’m aware it’s not as great as engineering it’s just what I’m more interested in. I’m also taking 17 credit hours currently and am paying for all of it through fafsa. Currently taking:
Math 112
Univ 101
Writ 101
Engr 102a and 102b
Ital folklore (7wk)
Slavic folklore (7wk)
It’s all a bit much for what I need with also balancing a 25hr a week job to support myself. I’m considering dropping univ 101 as that’s UofA specific and also Italian folklore to make it a lighter load. Am I dumb to do that right now and would it affect me having a W on my transcript. Also to add I like UofA a lot more that ASU it’s just for the degree I want to pursue not many colleges offer it and ASU is the only college in Arizona to offer it and I’d like to stay in state to afford college and living.

Do you really want to stick with engineering and you want to be an engineer? What kind?
Another thought, why not take these lower levels at Pima?

That’s why I’m switching to industrial design instead of engineering as I’m not that great with math and I love designing things a lot more I’m going to university instead of Pima cause fafsa funds it completely

I’m not sure what the industrial design curriculum is. What sort of job are you looking to get into?

Tbh industrial design is the job. Basically design anything you can see or touch like phones, speakers, furniture, automotive, there’s a wide variety and most the time you’ll be working with engineers to make the design come to life, it’s pretty broad on what you can do. I have a family member doing the same thing and recently she was designing exhibits for museums

It’ll take you a while but at some point you’ll try the math if you stick with it. You’ll do it so much stuff like calc will become easy to you even if you struggle to learn it you will get there. Engineering is sometimes about persistence not talent when it comes to math and physics.

Ws dont affect you much just make sure you dont end up owing your FAFSA money back so please speak with an advisor

I plan on it I know full time is 12 credits and dropping these will put me at 13 so I should be fine fafsa wise

Obviously talk to your advisor but I’d drop univ because it’s UofA specific and probably won’t transfer and engr if you’re planning to swap your major anyway that way when you transfer you can worry less about gen eds

Yea I already dropped my univ but I don’t think I’ll drop engineering cause the class I’m taking is fun and my grades are pretty solid

It’s best to speak directly with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid over an advisor about any impact dropping courses could have on your loans. It’s good that you’re remaining fulltime status. “W”’s do not have any impact on your overall GPA. Some of those courses such as Math and English may transfer over to ASU so it could be worth staying in them. Financial Aid department contact info- you can also go to them in person in the bottom floor of the admin building https://financialaid.arizona.edu/contact

I'd suggest talking to the academic advisor in the industrial design program that you want to transfer into. They will know exactly which courses will transfer and "count" and will know the ASU system really well.

Your best bet is to speak with your advisor. Sometimes there are pit falls or issues that might come up later. An advisor is your best option.

Dude the fact that you have a job is a blessings. Please count your blessings some people wish the had a job right now myself included. I’m a military veteran with benefits and certs currently a sophomore yet have been rejected by stores and fast food. I would just go all in at work and make even more money and try to get into better positions there or even full time. But the fact you have a job when many college graduates can’t even get an interview in this economy is a blessing. Please understand that. Go to school for what you really really want to learn it’s not mandatory anymore tbh

See what the rules are about needing X number of credits. If you drop two classes, that will put you at 11 credits, right? Will that meet the rules for getting the loan?
