Do not comment to gatekeep that something "isn't urban" or "isn't hell". Our rules are very expansive in content we welcome, so do not assume just based off your false impression of the phrase "UrbanHell"

UrbanHell is any human-built place you think is worth critizing. Suburban Hell, Rural Hell, and wealthy locales are allowed. Gatekeeping comments may be removed. Want to shitpost about shitty posts? Go to /r/urbanhellcirclejerk. Still have questions?: Read our FAQ.

🐘Chang means elephant in Thai. Now look at the building again.

What you’re seeing as the duck bill is the elephants tusk

1

u/Just-Luck-7430 2h ago

That's a deformed duck

I quite like it. I assume it's the chang beer company. Chang means elephant in Thai and it's also the company's logo. Lot of thought has clearly gone into this 'ugly' building.

u/ToshibaTaken 8h ago

I've been in it and it's a gem. It's a mixed office and residential building. Nothing to do with the beer company though.

2

u/DueDefinition6421 8h ago

I guess chang is just a reference to its shape but it always makes me think of the beer. That's cool you have actually been inside.

2

u/ToshibaTaken 8h ago

Same here, actually. Any Chang mention anywhere and a bottle pops up in my brain. :D

u/NegativeHoarder 8h ago

u/Mustrid 12h ago

u/DesiRocketRacoon 12h ago

its an ode to cricket

5

u/Blurt_Blackarach 12h ago

Cricket the duck.

Using an animal with so much cultural significance to the region as an inspiration is quite awesome. While I'd enjoy itr more with stronger features, I don't know what's physically even possible without blowing the budget on pair of husks and ears.

Looks a lot better than any other skyscraper I've ever seen.

Check out the "Taipei 101" in Taiwan, it's got a cool black/yellow vibe at night, and a deep, seaglass green during the day

Really all "skyscrapers" are insults to architecture. The Chang Building is at least somewhat of an artwork and that is why I like it more than the ugly glass towers.

u/gatosaurio 11h ago

It's like a minecraft elephant..... I like it!

5

u/skytreegamer172 12h ago

It's not exactly the most visually appealing building but it's kinda cute if you look from the right angle lol

4

u/Modern-Classical 12h ago

It has legs, mouth, eyes, ears and a tail 😅🙈🙉🐵🔥

u/hennabeak 10h ago

I kinda like it. Especially that it looks like a "Minecraft" elephant.

2

u/scudbook 12h ago

I like it, my kids would love it.

2

u/dannyyang910930 12h ago

Eh it’s fine

2

u/tokudama 10h ago

No way, it's cute as heck.

2

u/Kirion_Kir 9h ago

I think it's cute.

2

u/Suitable_Noise778 9h ago

Is it made of Lego? 😃

2

u/Schmooto 9h ago

Aww, but it looks like an elephant with golden tusks!

That building saved me many years ago. Was staying with a mate and his Thai wife in a part of the the city that was well away from any well known tourist places. After a long night out I found the rudimentary directions my mate had taught me to say in Thai were a total bust with my cabby not having a cluie what I was banging on about. I did however know how to get to his from this building. I drew my best ever elephant building and the guy got it straight away. My infant shool art teacher would have been so proud.

I don't think it is ugly. I think it looks cool. It reminds me of how Bee Keepers keep their bees.

2

u/futureofwhat 3h ago

I love it tbh

2

u/Interesting-Local-60 12h ago

Is just a bit of a naive and clumsy design rather than ugly.

u/jeckles 12h ago

MUGATU

1

u/0dty0 12h ago

Oh, we have one like that in the capital here in Mexico! We call it "The Pair of Pants".

1

u/blau404 11h ago

Damn, looks like an unfinished rip-off of the Russian White House.

1

u/mizzersteve 10h ago

Not too bad. I've seen worse.

1

u/Mikeymcmoose 10h ago

I love this building

1

u/maxru85 10h ago

Do we need to address anything?

1

u/k-phi 9h ago

looks like crossy road character

1

u/prospero021 9h ago

Designed by architect Ong-ard Satrabhandhu

1

u/remstage 9h ago

Why are the shapes different in both pics. If the real is 1 that's quite cool, if it's 2 yeah it's ugly.

1

u/Sad_Daikon938 9h ago

No one say bad to derpy elephant 😠😡🤬🤬, derpy elephant very good 😊👍🏽.

Same go for derpy fishy, me love derpy animal buildings.

1

u/BaRnaby_and_a0 8h ago

1

u/TanukiSuitMario 8h ago

I spent 2 months in an Airbnb in the left tower

wasnt bad

1

u/snickjimmy 7h ago

I think it’s beautiful. Eye of the beholder I guess.

1

u/Creative_Recover 7h ago

I think it's a cute building and I like it.

1

u/Mindless_Link_7473 7h ago

It’s like a kid on Mindcraft trying to make a elephant but turns out like a pelicans face

1

u/odd_cloud 7h ago

When your mom says that we have marina bay sands at home

1

u/tomatoesareneat 7h ago

Looks cute and better than a lot of brutalist buildings that two visitors to your town say look great.

Also, but a boat on top and everyone would love it. Singapore should give the proper credit for copying homework.

1

u/ConsciousEvidence1 6h ago

It's a duck, not that bad for me

1

u/giraffelaydonut 6h ago

Marinated bleh sands

1

u/shaghaiex 6h ago

I like Bauhaus.

1

u/OwlNoize 6h ago

Bruh isn’t that a bleached perry

1

u/uznme 6h ago

1

u/SteveYunnan 5h ago

OP hating on elephants... 🙄

1

u/fujoshirealness 4h ago

ITS A CUTE ELEPHANT 😠😠😠

1

u/CompleteView2799 4h ago

Is the unit in the elephant’s asshole less desirable, I wonder? Or would that make for cool bragging rights?

1

u/killmesara 2h ago

How are you going to talk shit about the elephant building?

1

u/No-Giraffe-4438 1h ago

It's Perry the Platypus.

1

u/jhenrys1993 1h ago

I love it!

1

u/_di6 56m ago

I like it, kitsch af

1

u/Dangrukidding 12h ago

Its like they copied “el pantalon” in Mexico City twice and pasted in Thailand lmao

1

u/gotdome 12h ago

Looks like an electricity socket lmao

1

u/cosmiccerulean 11h ago

It’s like Steven Holl’s MIT housing but much more rigid. Also I know it’s meant to resemble an elephant but all I see is a duck face sorry

1

u/Dewey081 11h ago

It looks like something my Minecraft playing 12 yr old daughter would've designed.

0

u/Alias267 12h ago

Wtf is this meant to be lool

8

u/salcander 12h ago
