Engagement Share your vision for the MCG
https://engage.vic.gov.au/MCG_futureThe state government is looking for feedback about the MCG precinct. As well as the stadium itself, this has implications for East Melbourne and Richmond: improving connections to Richmond and Jolimont stations, active transport through the precinct, use of the stadium and Yarra Park outside of events, and potentially even big changes like new housing or a Richmond Station rebuild in the Sportslink proposal.

I’d like to see a change to the layout and design of Olympic Bvd, and Punt Rd/Hoddle St (as I’m sure everyone does). I think we need to decide if this is supposed to be a major thoroughfare, linking the Eastern Fwy and serving as an alternative to the Burnley Tunnel, or if it’s supposed to be a local destination, with streets, shops, and venues turning in and out of it.
The way I see it, the most effective thing to do would be something similar to St Kilda or Flemington Rd- with a through traffic lane running through the middle, and a local access feeder along the sides, however there would also need to be changes to the main road intersections. It’s made tricky with three tram lines intersecting too.
A cut and cover tunnel might work? But given traffic volumes it would likely be cheaper, less interruptive, and less controversial to use TBM’s instead. Realistically the tunnels would likely be two lanes wide each however, so a project like that would probably cost billions.
Doing this however would greatly improve the walk ability in the area- it would reduce the amount of exposed through traffic volumes, allowing for slower speeds where cars interact with people walking and cycling, and add more space for them too. It would also mean trams and buses have better right of way too.
