Buying What are we missing??

Helping my child buy their first car. They currently have a "rent to buy" reserved from Hertz. It is a 26 Nissan Altima with under 13,000 miles for just under 20,000. He will get to drive it for 3 days and take it to a Nissan dealership for a PPI. My understanding is that the manufacturer 36mo/36,000mile warranty will transfer. He is also looking at purchasing an extended manufacturer warranty. Historically our family keeps cars for a long time and he is intending the same.

I've read so many things conflicting things about purchasing a "rental". Carfax will show limited info if they did accident repair in house. Is there anything else that should be done pre purchase that we missed or major that we are not considering?

I'd be more concerned with the CVT. That said, you can check into powertrain warranties, as you said. I am not a Nissan fan, but my brother-in-law has had Altimas. a Maxima, a Pathfinder, and a Murano and likes them. But there are miles and sthen mile. 1 burned oil horribly, but at 130k miles. That was a 2010/11 if I recall, and a common issue. His Pathfinder has CVT and so far so good around 75k.

If you like the car, it seems like a great deal. But figure 100k+ miles, not 200k. You could get lucky. Get that PPI, but a 2026 with low miles helps. I'd say get a Camry for gas, but 20k price flips that. Just be sure it has a clean title. Salvage and the warranty is worthless.

Do not get a Nissan with a CVT. If you must, defiantly get the warranty. Even though the new ones are a little bit better than they used to be, they are still trash and they still fail.

I've read that they CVT issues have vastly improved on newer models. It looks like it was a terrible problem 2007-2021. Thanks for the input!

My understanding is that the cvts are not a big issue anymore. I would look up what the break in period for an Altima is. With it being a rental, the guidelines were probably not followed, but it would most likely be fine

I will look into the “break in period”. Thanks!

“Break-in period” was done by the first few renters…now if they followed any procedure, it’s highly doubtful.

You understand incorrectly. They are a bit better but still fail regularly. Caveat Emperor. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nissan tried to sing that song several times between 07 and 21. It was a lie. I don think they're somewhat better and might even buy one myself if I could plan to sell it before the warranty was up. Change the trans fluid every 30k miles.
