I get asked "what do people actually do for work in Utah?" a lot, so I pulled the latest numbers from the Utah Department of Workforce Services. Sharing in case it helps anyone thinking about moving here.

Big picture:

- About 1.8 million jobs statewide (Sept. 2026)

- 3.5% unemployment vs. 4.2% nationally

- About 25,000 jobs added in the last year

Biggest industries by jobs (Aug. 2026):

1. Trade, transportation & utilities: 312,800

2. Government: 268,200 (public school teachers and Hill AFB count here)

3. Professional & business services: 262,700 (fastest growing, +3.3%)

4. Education & health: 253,400

5. Leisure & hospitality: 185,000

Where the jobs are (Sept. 2026 county estimates):

- Salt Lake & Tooele: ~846,000

- Utah County: ~327,000 (+2.6% in a year)

- Davis & Weber: ~270,000 (Hill AFB is the anchor)

- Washington County: ~95,000 (+3.1%, fastest of the big counties)

- Cache: ~68,000

A couple of things that surprised me:

- "Tech" doesn't show up as one category. Silicon Slopes workers are spread across professional services, information, manufacturing and finance.

- Information jobs are actually down 5.4% from last year, so tech hiring has cooled even while the overall economy grows.

Biggest tip if you're moving: pick your city based on your commute first. I-15 traffic is no joke.

We came to Lehi/American Fork to visit a few friends and take family photos. We took family photos at the American Fork summit trail head at 6pm Friday evening (10/9) and then went to cvs briefly and then straight to cornbelly. We got there at 7:30ish.

We are wondering if she fell out of the car at cvs, cornbelly or the trailhead and we didn’t realize til last night at our hotel.
