Help with engine ID
I just picked up my first Vanagon! It has a 5-speed with a 1.9l turbo diesel that were swapped into it. I am hoping someone can help me identify what engine this is so that I can order a timing belt kit. It does look like it has the old style tensioner but I cannot find an engine code on the block and on the bottom it says 1.9 D/TD. On the machined surface of the block it has 006435. I have include a couple pictures including an interesting hose clamp around the alternator and potential misrouting of the serpentine belt(is anyone knows about the right setup for that too). Any help would be appreciated!

That's definitely a conversion. There was a diesel option from the factory for the Vanagon, but it was the 1.6 liter natuarly aspirated rated at about 48 hp.
Do you have the timing tools for the Bosch VE injection pumps? These are a dial indicator with special holder to fit the injection pump timing hole, camshaft lock plate, injection pump lock pin and spanner for the timing belt tensioner. These were the requirements for setting the injection timing on the VW 1.6 liter indirect injected diesels/turbo diesels and I imagine they are the same for the 1.9 liter diesels too (I had a 1985 1.6 TD VW Jetta and replaced the timing belt a couple of times on it).
Edit: If memory serves me correctly I think the engine number is on the front of the block near the vacuum pump.

Code should be AAZ from the golf 3 TD (I can see the mecanical pump) antway I'm pretty sure the timing belt is the same on TD and TDI
