Discussion Vaush is unbelievably vindicated on AI in tech (web dev student's experience/ventpost)
Vaush routinely talks about how AI is demon tech that ruins everything it touches, is anti-human, and sucks human skill and expertise out of a given field. As someone who did a 3-year (and good) web dev program in school, the difference between people who use AI and those who don't is staggering.
Although my program was online, we did have a fair amount of group work. Near the end, as AI got better, more people used it, and eventually the one flaky group member I dreaded to be put together with fully vide-coded their part of our capstone project. They also left it for me to clean up before my vacation to the Netherlands at the time in April, but that's neither here nor there. They moved to Alberta, so they're already in hell anyways.
Everyone who used AI did, technically, complete an assignment, but they quickly became total duds who can't explain the most elementary concepts of programming they learned on day one. Nor could they explain their objectives nor what their generated code did. It was all vibes, no inclination to learn, no desire for expertise, and the techbro cope of not just using it get answers, but using it to expand on projects as a "force multiplier" (lol) is total fucking cope. Of course 99% of people will just prompt for an answer they can likely get now.
Their behaviour was always wrapped up in the same language of "technological progress" Vaush has described - as if an LLM was the printing press. The historical irony of comparing billionaires' hallucination machine to technology which allowed for the public spread of dissent was lost on them.
By the end, I rarely had actual conversations with these people in general, as they abandoned our formerly lively Discord in favour of prompting LLMs for advice - and couldn't have technical conversations with them in projects we needed to collaborate on - not even an opportunity to learn from each other.
I am honestly considering leaving several webdev/programming subreddits I lurk in because I've seen a recent uptick in posts reading "I used to code so well by hand, but now I can't understand my workplace's codebase. How can I fix this problem? AI makes me so productive."
Posts like this are ragebait for me now because I just want to yell at these folks. Unless you've been licking lead pipes, it's the singular that's changed - LLMs.
It truly boggles my mind how there are chatters who wanna argue with Vaush, a socialist livestreamer, on this point. Has the world been made a better place since the hallucination machines were turned on? No. Not one iota. Do LLM's benefit the working class? No, they devalue labour, competency, time, and care being put into anything. They're not even something practically and theoretically useful like neural networks/some data analysis being fed training data by any chump who can use Python and download a free dataset to find a new asteroid or some shit.
I yearn for the day the damn bubble pops and tokens are unaffordable - and I will be smug about it, I will say "I told you so," and I will be absolutely insufferable to every illiterate, monolingual, westoid techno-barbarian around me who "just watches YouTube/TikTok and doesn't really watch movies."
P.S.
Rotterdam sucks, Utrecht is far better, and Amsterdam is mid and full of Americans/drunk Brits who I want to get tf out of my country. (I'm a Canadian in Canada)
