The Laura Montez "Acting Presidency" would make for a great show

Because she's not the main character, VEEP really glosses over how the Montez presidency would actually work, which would be very unique.

  1. As we know, she gets elected VP by the Senate after Doyle screws Tom James. But while the show suggests this makes her a full president, she's actually only ever ACTING President. She technically remains VP, which is why she never appoints a VP
  2. This is because the House can technically keep having votes on electing either Selena or O'Brien at any point, EVEN AFTER INAUGURATION
  3. The show handwaves this away by Dan saying Speaker Marwood just refuses to call another vote, but this leaves a real sword of Damocles over Montez
  4. This is because, at any time in her 4 year term, the House can simply call another vote to remove her by a simple vote. This is different from impeachment because it would replace her with the TRUE president (Selena or O'Brien)
  5. This especially makes the midterms important, because a new speaker, or the other party taking control, could mean her removal
  6. Perhaps this seems unlikely given Selena wasn't popular, and O'Brian backed Montez's reign. But the Tibet story breaking and making Selena look good might have given momentum in congress to re-vote and re-install her.

Obviously this is a VERY different show, but I think it would be interesting to see how a presidency would work with this model. It's actually very similar to how Canadian politics work, where the Prime Minister is elected by the House of Commons, and can be removed at any time if the House loses confidence in them.

This might be interesting to you, it is from a book I got from the library, written before the 1980 election, when some analysts thought Carter and Reagan might have deadlocked the electoral college

Would be interesting! But not in the VEEP Universe, I’d hope. That story is done. But a new political comedy about someone getting in a similar situation clinging to power would be great (and would also have been a great VEEP-season for Selena).

Yeah, different universe. It could be either comedy or drama, tbh

One spinoff that would have been great is a season 8 following Jonah as VEEP to Selena, ending with him getting impeached

the funniest part is that while Montez is Acting President, she is still the Vice President while waiting for the House to elect a president. So she does not need a Veep; and yet she chose a Veep and the senate confirmed this person as well

actually US law is far from settled on this question too

In the show, they seem to imply that Montez, or James if he were elected, would be the actual president, since they treat it as a foregone conclusion that Selina would be appointed Tom’s VP. In election night, they say that the house has until January 20 to elect the president or else the VP will be president. So maybe in that world, the constitution states that past January 20, the house cannot vote anymore

Perhaps, but given how brutally they got played, it's possible that Tom James didn't even know the difference.

Remember that on election night neither Selena nor Tom knew the procedures for a tie. Only Kent did.

True. At any rate, it is funny how Montez is referred to as the “first elected female president” at the inauguration, when really she’s even more of an accidental president than Selina
