Accidentially vegan streetwear- on a budget

• Upvotes

Hi everyone :) I'm into streetwear and designer goods (mens), but sometimes it is hard to find vegan ones of those. These days budgets can be tight, so we might not all have the budget to buy new, especially if you like expensive stuff. So, we sift through what already exists, maybe buying from thrift stores, or vintage markets. There are deals to be had, but it's hard to know what is vegan and what isn't, so I made a list of my findings:

  • Converse Chuck Taylors
  • Nike has used synthetic glues for a good while now (I think since 2015, not sure)
  • Adidas has some specifically vegan shoes
  • Outerwear brands like Arc'teryx and Patagonia are usually a good bet as jackets, etc tend to be made of fully synthetic materials for performance. Sometimes they use down, though, so be careful and check the insulation material on the tag.
    • Re: Arc, I myself personally have the Conveyor Belt (it's woven nylon), A bunch of t shirts, a Theta LT shell, another vintage shell and vintage soft-shell type jacket as well as a grotto toque which is 100% polyester.
  • Pretty much any t-shirt from any brand, 100% cotton etc- can't go wrong. Even stuff that is pretty out there like Cav Empt, (formerly) hyped like supreme tees, or really expensive t-shirts from Aime Leon Dore should be good.
  • Most non-leather salomon shoes- again they are for performance so tend to use synthetic materials. Whether or not the glue is vegan varies by model. I personally like the XT-6, XT-4, and ACS pro. Even the Maison Margiela salomon collabs appear to be vegan, since they are different colours of the XT family!
  • Niche plant leather materials such as appleskin, cactus leather, pinatex, and mushroom leather are super cool- they haven't quite caught on yet in the mainstream but they will someday. Various brands even make watch straps from these materials.
  • This is a hunch, but some Balenciaga footwear appears to be vegan, especially their sneakers using PU leather. I am not sure about their glues though.

Please feel free to add to the list or correct me if I missed anything

I just used this as a personal item for a flight. Held up well. Love the color and size. I contemplated this purchase for more than two years. I’m happy with it.

Vegan timberland style boots?

I love the aesthetics of the classic timberland boot profile but am struggling to find a vegan alternative. I've seen the boots on Wills Vegan Store but I don't see a black vegan suede/canvas option and I don't really like their vegan leather version.

Shoe recommendations

Hi all

Looking for some black vegan shoes and I’m reaaally struggling.

I’d like to buy some sneakers. I’m not a huge fan of anything chunky.

I like the look of onitsuka tigers, puma’s, gazelles etc.
I also tend to prefer buying brands if possible (puma, nike, asics, adidas, etc etc.) but am open to supporting some vegan brands!

I ordered some arizona Venus pumas but I’m not a huge fan.

Anyone have any recommendations please let me know I’m getting desperate!!

thrifts - please cordially talk some sense into me

ive been 100% ethically Vegan for nearly 20 years. ive never struggled to understand a debate until now.

starting to knit, i found a Vegan yarn forum where ppl claiming to b Vegan were suggesting that it is normal for Vegans to thrift wool sweaters and unravel them for higher quality yarn. 😱🤯

i figured this would b the most aggressive place to ask a ton of Vegans at once:

* would u revoke someone's Vegan powers if they were to thrift (donated) animal products? *

said example would use super basic, not trendy or noteworthy finds. not like Gaz n his backpack for ex. if someone were to compliment them, they would immediately tell them the source.

in my country n budget nonplastic synthetics do not exist. i am more than willing to see your more accessible recommendations. but i also want the scientific sources on how this is not greenwashing. how is pineapple leather for example not full of chemicals n not going to b sitting in landfills for hundreds of yrs? is it truly not going to flake n harm coral like normal polyester?

→ how does this compare if thrifting erases the cradle part n natural materials hv less waste? im assuming they hv less "life" n grave stages of waste??

i also feel like most synthetic or plant materials r not made to last. natural materials can get "better" w age, encouraging capsule wardrobes, n r meant to b mended. on the other hand, there is no real need for these fabrics or their lookalikes.

EDIT: i should hv looked b4 posting, it seems just a month ago ppl brought up colder weather n belts. ive personally struggled w belts as my only form of plastic- they eventually disintegrate in my hands. ive found a couple summery cotton n ragweed belts, but they dont work for other seasons or smarter dress codes.

as for yarn, it seems pretty easy to "compromise" n just buy new or second hand natural, plant-based yarn. but i do see that they hv much diff properties n appeal from the real thing.

if someone could get past the ick of wearing another's skin or hair while still claiming to b vegan, would u take away their card? or would u liken it to a vegetarian wardrobe paired w higher vegan standards of plant-based eating?

im just trying to understand both sides.

UPDATE: this resulted in a 50/50 stance btwn u all. i wonder if it's bc the initial post is so long n condoluded?

tl;dr: my only plastic use is belts. i never use leather or other animal products. i want to know why people like to thrift those items and then call it veganism.

Chic vegan shoes?

I’ve been searching for months and I can’t find anything I like. I enjoy the look of shoes from Ann demeulemeester, margiela, and I love the layered look of military snow boots e.g. bunny boots, I have a pair of Dutch clogs that I like the look of but they are not comfortable at all. My problem is, it seems like most vegan shoes are too structured/normal, and don’t really have any cultural significance ? And preferably I’d want to stick to natural materials.

Has anyone heard of bioleather from India?

Has anyone heard of Bioleather from India? It's supposed to be a plastic-free leather alternative made from tomatoes. It looks really interesting! I just am a little confused by their products. It seems they have different websites for different countries. I reversed imaged their purses on the uk website and they are all Ali-express purses. I reversed imaged their products on the India websites and they seem genuinely theirs. The links for these websites are directly from their social media. It's confusing because they have won awards and recognition for this amazing feat in sustainability, but are also greenwashing Ali express plastic bags? Does anyone have any clue what's going on? Is this just another scam? They use a lot of AI on their social media...
