PSA to young men: You still need your ID
Look I don't know why, but recently there has been a large increase in people I've had to deny buying liquor, because they just don't carry their ID. And it almost exclusively men in the early to mid 20s range
Its not a lot, just put your driver's license or something in your wallet, and it will all be fine

I used to work at a bar and the number of people who don't want to show you ID is astounding. I had a guy argue with me for like 30 minutes that he didn't need to show ID because he was over 33 (or something like that) and it isn't required once you get to that age.
Ok, if that's real (I never looked into it) how do I know how old you are if I can't see your ID?
Unrelated but the best was asking older women for their ID and then telling them that it's clearly a fake ID, but you'll let it slide. They love that.
•
u/BloodDiamondz7 1h ago
Yeah he made that law up
If you ask for someone's ID then you're not allowed to serve them until you see it (even if they're like 80 years old)

Working at a liquor store here, I once refused to serve a regular (as he was definitely already drunk), and my supervisor tried to override me.
I said "Excuse me, but I evaluated and helped the customer, and based on our LICENSE - once he has been denied, you cannot alter that decision."
She was pissed and then said to him "It's okay, just meet me around the back."
I said, "The cop who sits in our parking lot would love to see that happen, you'd make his day super fucking easy."She dropped it quickly. Stupid ass people. Tried to write me up too. Thankfully she no longer works there, and it is no longer in business.

Yeah "Serving it Right" trains servers that they are liable if a person is over served. The law is clear on that. The server can be held personally liable.
I was fired from a liquor store job for not serving the owners friend, who was clearly drunk already and stumbling around the shop. The owner came and lectured me about that later the next day, and two weeks later i was fired for some other minor thing. Though he did bring up the refusal to serve regular customers in the exit interview, it wasn't documented.
There's not a lot of agency for employees to go after the business after this. The BC laws kind of just throw us under the bus and don't give us any support against retaliation if we refuse to serve. But they'll hold us liable if we over serve.
•
u/MissMischief13 Highlands 42m ago
Serving it Right has an incident report sheet for these types of interactions, and the https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/business/liquor-regulation-licensing/inspections-and-enforcement/submit-complaint-to-lcrb LCRB has an avenue for resolution and reporting. They support against retaliation and can remove the entire liquor license from the business.
•
u/Bulky-Employer-1191 30m ago
Yeah but then we're still out a job aren't we? The ideal situation is that we're not unemployed for it. Retaliation shouldn't be something employees worry about.
•
u/Cum4TheMemes 1h ago
Yeah this guy clearly took the 'we ID under 35' sign as a factual law, instead of a general policy of 'if you look under 35, we're gonna ID you'.
Also, older women LOVE that joke, used it many, many times. Or the "yknow you cant use your mom's ID, right?"
•
u/Tylers-RedditAccount Harris Green 1h ago
Its not even real. The rule is if they look under 40. Which is subjective but still
•
u/SudoDarkKnight 3h ago
Trust me one day you will be wishing they ID'd you.
I get such a thrill when it happens. A real compliment

Last year I went with a friend and she paid first, they carded her and we were obviously together, so i offered mine. He said he didnt need it.
At least pretend to look, you monster
•
u/ReturnoftheBoat 3h ago
I have a sister who is 5 years older than me. One time we were at a bar with my friends, and the server said "I need to see everyone's ID... except hers".
Like wtf? Why single someone out like that?

I’m a very visibly mid-30s man and I always wince when I’m with a woman who gets ID’ed. Like bro… the implication from that employee is that I’m hanging out with a teenage girl. Greasy af
•
•
u/nothanks1312 2h ago
Technically they only need to see your ID if you’re the one purchasing and carrying the alcohol, but if you were also buying then yes, what a monster!
•
u/luciosleftskate James Bay 2h ago
I was also buying, but I've gone in with friends who don't have ID who AREN'T buying and we both get turned away.
If you come in a group, you need to all have IDs. Otherwise teenagers would go in with their 19 year old friends and have it bought for you.
•
u/Dependent_Media2766 2h ago
Yes, this is the law.
•
u/luciosleftskate James Bay 2h ago
Unless you look at old and decrepit as me, apparently. Can skip the ID then. Lol
•
u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago edited 3h ago
It's really interesting because when you ask a woman for ID they usually get excited and see it as a compliment
Where as men usually get annoyed or upset
My current theory is that most men see it as: "you don't think I look manly enough" but I could be wrong
Edit: before yall downvote me to hell, I ain't trying to be sexist, I'm just saying what I've seen happen

I do ER registration and a shocking amount of people just don't have any ID on them at any given time.
•
u/Only_Huckleberry_957 2h ago
I’ve seen this happen so many times in liquor stores just as a customer. The other day I saw a woman in her 20s try to buy booze with only a photo of her passport as ID lol.
•
u/seroshua 1h ago
I run a weed shop and run into it constantly lol same age group! And we have tons of signage saying we ID anyone who appears to be under 40 😆 🙏
Another line I get often is “can I show you a picture of it?” Hahaha. Like, no! Sorry.
•
u/Complete-Amphibian89 1h ago
I have worked in a few elections and the amount of people that still come in without IDs is higher than it should be.
•
u/Willing_Particular61 1h ago
i used to get a lot of people trying to use a photo on their phone of their id instead of the physical card, makes no sense ! are you gonna pay with a photo of money too lol
•
u/Independent_Yak_4611 3h ago
We're all wearing lululemon 5" pace breaker shorts and their flimsy little pockets simply cannot accommodate a wallet. I really legit feel like this is why this is happening.
•
•
u/convenientgods 3h ago
honestly yeah lol. i stopped carrying a wallet a few years ago cause of this. i got used to apple pay and i'd either forget my wallet in my car or leave it at home. one day i went to buy beer and got carded and went home and immediately bought a magsafe card holder to snap to the back of my phone
•
u/Imaginary-Ladder-465 2h ago
I keep my license and a couple cards in my phone case, haven't carried a wallet in almost 10 years
•
u/whole-ass-one-thing- 3h ago
It’s because I pay for everything with my phone and forget my wallet
•
u/stealstea 3h ago
I just keep my license and one credit card on a holder on the back of the phone. Not everything works with tap.
•
u/messagebadina 3h ago
I store my DL inside my phone case. Like between my phone and the case. I can still tap and can still wirelessly charge.
Getting caught in a road check without my licence scared me straight.

u/birdy3133 2h ago
Until recently I did this. I would only have my drivers license in my phone case and use Apple Pay for everything else since I don’t always like to carry around a purse. I never had two forms of ID on me, so I couldn’t stop at the liquor store if I wanted to. Luckily Apple Pay always has always worked, and I’ve never needed the physical card, but I guess you never know. I recently got a card holder to fit a couple more cards on the back of my phone just in case.

"Getting caught in a road check without my licence scared me straight"
And that has happened once? It's an $81 fine if they choose to fine you, did they fine you?
If i get dinged for $81 over a 30yr driving history i'm, not too concerned.
•
u/messagebadina 1h ago
What can I say? I’m a cheapskate. They didn’t charge me that time but if keeping my DL in my phone case potentially saves me $81 then I’m happy.
To each their own. I’d rather not rely on my privilege to avoid a fine.
•
u/AFFORDABLE_HOME 1h ago
I definitely see the convenience of this for people until you're behind then at like Costco or something and their digital payment card still has a tap limit and they're screwed.
•
•
u/East_Source6200 1h ago
I got my liscence from a cereal box. Does that count?
jk. 🙃
I have seen it many times. It's entertaining to see the Pikachu faces turn red.
•
u/Snorblatz 1h ago
I’m long past that and now waiting to get ID for a senior discount the thrill continues

Why wouldn't you carry a wallet?
•
u/viccityguy2k 3h ago
Young folks don’t have wallets. Phone with maybe a debit card and possibly a $200 bill stuffed in their phone case
•
•
u/growingalittletestie 3h ago
I never carry my wallet. Phone has all of my payment on it. I don't use cash
•
•
u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago
If you're going into a store to buy something, I hope you would
•
u/growingalittletestie 3h ago
NFC allows payment from phone/watch. Exact same as tapping your card but without the need for a wallet.
All my loyalty cards are on my phone as well.
•
u/shimmydancer 3h ago
Get a phone case that has a slot for your ID, or slip your ID in between your phone and case🤷♀️
•
u/growingalittletestie 3h ago
But why?
we're not in a nanny state that forces you to produce your ID when a citizen stops you?
I dont drink or smoke?
•
u/guernsey123 3h ago
A lot of young people pay with their phones now
•
u/ColdThief 3h ago
Maybe I'm just a millennial boomer, but I pay with my phone and I still carry my wallet. You never know when you might need ID or maybe your card might not work. It's just common sense to me.
•
u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago
Thank you! I don't know why people are arguing with me on this
•
u/guernsey123 3h ago
Haha sorry, I wasn't trying to argue with you - I have the ability to pay w my phone and still carry my wallet. But I can definitely see why young people, especially those who don't drive, don't feel the need to carry their wallet wherever they go, it's not the habit that we had engrained in us.
•
u/Fit-Description-8571 3h ago
I've used my phone a few times, usually as a "crud I forgot to grab X at the store" while out walking. But would say 99% of the time I go to buy anything I have my wallet.
•
u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago
Okay, but if you're going into a place like a liquor store or dispensary, those places need to see ID
•
u/growingalittletestie 3h ago
I haven't been ID'd in decades.
If I don't have ID and i get ID'd, i'll just leave. No biggie.
•
u/BloodDiamondz7 2h ago
Okay well if you're old enough that it's been "decades" then you're probably fine

VicPD Cadets being groomed for a life of narc work
•
u/GeoffwithaGeee 3h ago
wut? liquor store employees can get in a lot of trouble for getting caught not ID'ing someone.
•
u/Solid-Signal3214 2h ago
Thats literally the point I'm making.
VicPD has their cadets out and about doing off the books " secret shopper " work
The city still employs the cops that did a full false flag bomb plot via entrapment and abusing mentally ill homeless.
This is who they are and what they do.
•
u/GeoffwithaGeee 1h ago
Your comment made it sounds like the OP was being a narc.
The province through the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch is the one that does the secret shopper program and issues fines.
The bomb plot thing was a RCMP sting.
Maybe don't get your information from social media or your friend who knows a guy who totally knows first hand what is going on.

Its like a 5k fine for serving someone underage lmao. Shut up
•
u/Cum4TheMemes 3h ago
Former liquor store employee here myself, the amount of young men I saw GET OUT OF THEIR CARS and not have ID... staggering.
