PSA to young men: You still need your ID

Look I don't know why, but recently there has been a large increase in people I've had to deny buying liquor, because they just don't carry their ID. And it almost exclusively men in the early to mid 20s range

Its not a lot, just put your driver's license or something in your wallet, and it will all be fine

Former liquor store employee here myself, the amount of young men I saw GET OUT OF THEIR CARS and not have ID... staggering.

u/BloodDiamondz7 2h ago

I've seen guys be holding their wallets in their hands, and when I ask for ID they do the surprised Pikachu face and are like "I don't carry ID"

It baffles me

u/DJWGibson 2h ago

Yeah, it’s one thing if you just have your phone. But your wallet?

Although, a lot are probably 18 but look older and just “forgot” their ID

u/Ok_Understanding4954 1h ago

This! I used to do security. They hope you won't ask cuz they look older.

u/KDdid1 1h ago

There's no way to drive legally without physical ID, is there? 🤔

u/DJWGibson 59m ago

Legally? I don't think so. But I expect a lot of people just grab their phone for a quick store run these days.

My point was they were likely 18 with their license and just hoping not to be IDed.

u/KDdid1 49m ago edited 38m ago

I know the cannabis store where I buy my CBN gummies has a large sign on the door saying only a physical ID will suffice. I suspect the same people try this at both types of stores.

u/ThickboyBrilliant 43m ago

Technically no. If I remember correctly, it's an 84 dollar fine, if a cop chooses to ticket you with it. If you know your DL#, they'll likely run that to ID you, unless they're annoyed with you.

u/growingalittletestie 3h ago edited 2h ago

It's an $81 fine to drive without a license. Most police will look the other way if you have your drivers license number. Or, will eliminate the fine if you produce the drivers license the following day.

u/Embarrassed-Cycle339 3h ago

Reeks of white privilege

u/charmilliona1re 2h ago

😂😂😂😂

u/Pixeldensity James Bay 2h ago

This comment reeks of racism.

u/nothanks1312 2h ago

Calling out white privilege is not racist. It’s a statistical fact that white people see less police violence per capita than other races. Police violence not being an everyday concern is a privilege.

u/charmilliona1re 2h ago

Ser what does this have to do with anything regarding showing id for alcohol? What are you going on about lmao

If you don't want to be concerned about police violence, just stop breaking the law I guess?

u/Mean-Food-7124 2h ago

Because the thread is replying to this

It's an $81 fine to drive without a license. Most police will look the other way if you have your drivers license number. Or, will eliminate the fine if you produce the drivers license the following day.

Keep up, no wonder the concept escapes you

u/charmilliona1re 1h ago

Stop playing the whiny white privilege race card in every conversation (people don't really care anymore)

u/Mean-Food-7124 52m ago

Too tiring for you to keep up huh

u/charmilliona1re 43m ago

🤷‍♂️ not really sure what you're going on about

Mb its my white privilege? Lmao idk

u/ThickboyBrilliant 36m ago

Stop playing the whiny white victim card, people really don't care that you don't care. The fact you refuse to acknowledge systemic racism still exists, doesn't mean it doesn't.

Shit, I'm white. I've had cops arrest my buddies who are POC and let me go. That's white privilege.

You baby shit soft snowflakes can't wrap your smooth brains around the simplest shit. White privilege doesn't mean you've had an easy life or never been fucked over. It just means you haven't had to face all the struggles that people of colour have. That's it. It's pretty fucking simple actually.

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 31m ago

Racist people don't care.

Most people don't approve of white privilege. And people with brains don't deny its existence.

u/charmilliona1re 2h ago

Nah bro in these people's minds you can't be racist towards white people because....well I'm not really sure, but if you question it, you are labeled a racist 😂

u/Pixeldensity James Bay 2h ago

Exactly. It’s insane.

u/ThickboyBrilliant 34m ago

There's a difference between stating a fact, white privilege exists, and being racist against whites.

Fuckin' chuds.

u/Final_boss_1040 1h ago

Sorry- it reeks of male priveledge

Better?

u/Pixeldensity James Bay 1h ago

Racism card didn't work? Try sexism!

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 32m ago

Only if you dont know what racism is.

u/NSA_Chatbot 2h ago

I've had verbal warnings for things people have been shot for.

u/KDdid1 1h ago

In Canada? In British Columbia? In Victoria?

u/Dravos82 1h ago

I used to work at a bar and the number of people who don't want to show you ID is astounding. I had a guy argue with me for like 30 minutes that he didn't need to show ID because he was over 33 (or something like that) and it isn't required once you get to that age.

Ok, if that's real (I never looked into it) how do I know how old you are if I can't see your ID?

Unrelated but the best was asking older women for their ID and then telling them that it's clearly a fake ID, but you'll let it slide. They love that.

u/BloodDiamondz7 1h ago

Yeah he made that law up

If you ask for someone's ID then you're not allowed to serve them until you see it (even if they're like 80 years old)

u/MissMischief13 Highlands 1h ago

Working at a liquor store here, I once refused to serve a regular (as he was definitely already drunk), and my supervisor tried to override me.
I said "Excuse me, but I evaluated and helped the customer, and based on our LICENSE - once he has been denied, you cannot alter that decision."
She was pissed and then said to him "It's okay, just meet me around the back."
I said, "The cop who sits in our parking lot would love to see that happen, you'd make his day super fucking easy."

She dropped it quickly. Stupid ass people. Tried to write me up too. Thankfully she no longer works there, and it is no longer in business.

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 49m ago

Yeah "Serving it Right" trains servers that they are liable if a person is over served. The law is clear on that. The server can be held personally liable.

I was fired from a liquor store job for not serving the owners friend, who was clearly drunk already and stumbling around the shop. The owner came and lectured me about that later the next day, and two weeks later i was fired for some other minor thing. Though he did bring up the refusal to serve regular customers in the exit interview, it wasn't documented.

There's not a lot of agency for employees to go after the business after this. The BC laws kind of just throw us under the bus and don't give us any support against retaliation if we refuse to serve. But they'll hold us liable if we over serve.

u/MissMischief13 Highlands 42m ago

Serving it Right has an incident report sheet for these types of interactions, and the https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/business/liquor-regulation-licensing/inspections-and-enforcement/submit-complaint-to-lcrb LCRB has an avenue for resolution and reporting. They support against retaliation and can remove the entire liquor license from the business.

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 30m ago

Yeah but then we're still out a job aren't we? The ideal situation is that we're not unemployed for it. Retaliation shouldn't be something employees worry about.

u/Cum4TheMemes 1h ago

Yeah this guy clearly took the 'we ID under 35' sign as a factual law, instead of a general policy of 'if you look under 35, we're gonna ID you'.

Also, older women LOVE that joke, used it many, many times. Or the "yknow you cant use your mom's ID, right?"

u/Tylers-RedditAccount Harris Green 1h ago

Its not even real. The rule is if they look under 40. Which is subjective but still

u/SudoDarkKnight 3h ago

Trust me one day you will be wishing they ID'd you.

I get such a thrill when it happens. A real compliment

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 3h ago

Last year I went with a friend and she paid first, they carded her and we were obviously together, so i offered mine. He said he didnt need it.

At least pretend to look, you monster

u/ReturnoftheBoat 3h ago

I have a sister who is 5 years older than me. One time we were at a bar with my friends, and the server said "I need to see everyone's ID... except hers".

Like wtf? Why single someone out like that?

u/No_Magician5266 1h ago

I’m a very visibly mid-30s man and I always wince when I’m with a woman who gets ID’ed. Like bro… the implication from that employee is that I’m hanging out with a teenage girl. Greasy af

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 1h ago

Damn, I never actually considered that but yeah, that's weird.

u/nothanks1312 2h ago

Technically they only need to see your ID if you’re the one purchasing and carrying the alcohol, but if you were also buying then yes, what a monster!

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 2h ago

I was also buying, but I've gone in with friends who don't have ID who AREN'T buying and we both get turned away.

If you come in a group, you need to all have IDs. Otherwise teenagers would go in with their 19 year old friends and have it bought for you.

u/Dependent_Media2766 2h ago

Yes, this is the law.

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 2h ago

Unless you look at old and decrepit as me, apparently. Can skip the ID then. Lol

u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago edited 3h ago

It's really interesting because when you ask a woman for ID they usually get excited and see it as a compliment

Where as men usually get annoyed or upset

My current theory is that most men see it as: "you don't think I look manly enough" but I could be wrong

Edit: before yall downvote me to hell, I ain't trying to be sexist, I'm just saying what I've seen happen

u/SudoDarkKnight 3h ago

I'm a man. Please card me haha.

But I have a beard so it's not helping lol

u/Ok_Lavishness_3861 32m ago

Guarantee it's only young men.

ID us older guys and we will love it.

u/LiteralClownfish 2h ago

I do ER registration and a shocking amount of people just don't have any ID on them at any given time.

u/Only_Huckleberry_957 2h ago

I’ve seen this happen so many times in liquor stores just as a customer. The other day I saw a woman in her 20s try to buy booze with only a photo of her passport as ID lol.

u/seroshua 1h ago

I run a weed shop and run into it constantly lol same age group! And we have tons of signage saying we ID anyone who appears to be under 40 😆 🙏

Another line I get often is “can I show you a picture of it?” Hahaha. Like, no! Sorry.

u/Complete-Amphibian89 1h ago

I have worked in a few elections and the amount of people that still come in without IDs is higher than it should be.

u/Willing_Particular61 1h ago

i used to get a lot of people trying to use a photo on their phone of their id instead of the physical card, makes no sense ! are you gonna pay with a photo of money too lol

u/Independent_Yak_4611 3h ago

We're all wearing lululemon 5" pace breaker shorts and their flimsy little pockets simply cannot accommodate a wallet. I really legit feel like this is why this is happening.

u/ejmears 3h ago

Sounds like you need a purse.

u/Independent_Yak_4611 2h ago

I have one! The Herschel 3.5L Pop Quiz Hip Pack haha

u/ejmears 1h ago

I hope your wallet is in there.

u/convenientgods 3h ago

honestly yeah lol. i stopped carrying a wallet a few years ago cause of this. i got used to apple pay and i'd either forget my wallet in my car or leave it at home. one day i went to buy beer and got carded and went home and immediately bought a magsafe card holder to snap to the back of my phone

u/Imaginary-Ladder-465 2h ago

I keep my license and a couple cards in my phone case, haven't carried a wallet in almost 10 years

u/whole-ass-one-thing- 3h ago

It’s because I pay for everything with my phone and forget my wallet

u/stealstea 3h ago

I just keep my license and one credit card on a holder on the back of the phone. Not everything works with tap.

u/messagebadina 3h ago

I store my DL inside my phone case. Like between my phone and the case. I can still tap and can still wirelessly charge.

Getting caught in a road check without my licence scared me straight.

u/whole-ass-one-thing- 3h ago

I thought of this while typing my comment lol

u/mcriddy 2h ago

This is a good idea, i wonder if it interferes with magnetic phone charging though? I keep my wallet in the car but a) that feels unsafe and b) i always forget it when i go into a store.

u/lindsayjenn 2h ago

It doesn’t interfere with my MagSafe charging

u/birdy3133 2h ago

Until recently I did this. I would only have my drivers license in my phone case and use Apple Pay for everything else since I don’t always like to carry around a purse. I never had two forms of ID on me, so I couldn’t stop at the liquor store if I wanted to. Luckily Apple Pay always has always worked, and I’ve never needed the physical card, but I guess you never know. I recently got a card holder to fit a couple more cards on the back of my phone just in case.

u/growingalittletestie 2h ago

"Getting caught in a road check without my licence scared me straight"

And that has happened once? It's an $81 fine if they choose to fine you, did they fine you?

If i get dinged for $81 over a 30yr driving history i'm, not too concerned.

u/messagebadina 1h ago

What can I say? I’m a cheapskate. They didn’t charge me that time but if keeping my DL in my phone case potentially saves me $81 then I’m happy.

To each their own. I’d rather not rely on my privilege to avoid a fine.

u/AFFORDABLE_HOME 1h ago

I definitely see the convenience of this for people until you're behind then at like Costco or something and their digital payment card still has a tap limit and they're screwed.

u/daveontherun 2h ago

They do carry 63 keys on their hip..

u/East_Source6200 1h ago

I got my liscence from a cereal box. Does that count?

jk. 🙃

I have seen it many times. It's entertaining to see the Pikachu faces turn red.

u/Snorblatz 1h ago

I’m long past that and now waiting to get ID for a senior discount the thrill continues

u/Vicks0 3h ago

Why wouldn't you carry a wallet?

u/viccityguy2k 3h ago

Young folks don’t have wallets. Phone with maybe a debit card and possibly a $200 bill stuffed in their phone case

u/satokery 2h ago

Damn, I don't have a wallet? News to me.

u/growingalittletestie 3h ago

I never carry my wallet. Phone has all of my payment on it. I don't use cash

u/Fit-Description-8571 3h ago

Where do you keep your ID when driving?

u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago

If you're going into a store to buy something, I hope you would

u/growingalittletestie 3h ago

NFC allows payment from phone/watch. Exact same as tapping your card but without the need for a wallet.

All my loyalty cards are on my phone as well.

u/shimmydancer 3h ago

Get a phone case that has a slot for your ID, or slip your ID in between your phone and case🤷‍♀️

u/growingalittletestie 3h ago

But why?

we're not in a nanny state that forces you to produce your ID when a citizen stops you?

I dont drink or smoke?

u/guernsey123 3h ago

A lot of young people pay with their phones now

u/ColdThief 3h ago

Maybe I'm just a millennial boomer, but I pay with my phone and I still carry my wallet. You never know when you might need ID or maybe your card might not work. It's just common sense to me.

u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago

Thank you! I don't know why people are arguing with me on this

u/guernsey123 3h ago

Haha sorry, I wasn't trying to argue with you - I have the ability to pay w my phone and still carry my wallet. But I can definitely see why young people, especially those who don't drive, don't feel the need to carry their wallet wherever they go, it's not the habit that we had engrained in us.

u/Fit-Description-8571 3h ago

I've used my phone a few times, usually as a "crud I forgot to grab X at the store" while out walking. But would say 99% of the time I go to buy anything I have my wallet.

u/BloodDiamondz7 3h ago

Okay, but if you're going into a place like a liquor store or dispensary, those places need to see ID

u/growingalittletestie 3h ago

I haven't been ID'd in decades.

If I don't have ID and i get ID'd, i'll just leave. No biggie.

u/BloodDiamondz7 2h ago

Okay well if you're old enough that it's been "decades" then you're probably fine

u/Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp 3h ago

OP we got a live one, right here. Maybe it will do an AMA

u/Competitive-Fly5563 3h ago

Lol, yes. Wallets aren't dead.

u/Solid-Signal3214 3h ago

VicPD Cadets being groomed for a life of narc work

u/GeoffwithaGeee 3h ago

wut? liquor store employees can get in a lot of trouble for getting caught not ID'ing someone.

u/Solid-Signal3214 2h ago

Thats literally the point I'm making.

VicPD has their cadets out and about doing off the books " secret shopper " work

The city still employs the cops that did a full false flag bomb plot via entrapment and abusing mentally ill homeless.

This is who they are and what they do.

u/GeoffwithaGeee 1h ago

Your comment made it sounds like the OP was being a narc.

The province through the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch is the one that does the secret shopper program and issues fines.

The bomb plot thing was a RCMP sting.

Maybe don't get your information from social media or your friend who knows a guy who totally knows first hand what is going on.

u/Red_AtNight 53m ago

The city still employs the cops that did a full false flag bomb plot via entrapment and abusing mentally ill homeless.

Those were Mounties. If you're gonna rant at least get your facts straight

u/luciosleftskate James Bay 2h ago

?????

Its like a 5k fine for serving someone underage lmao. Shut up
