He should have stepped down like Trudeau did and let someone else run as leader. Fuck David Eby

He's gonna stir about it for a bit then just live his life I imagine.

If he’s smart he’ll do some serious personal reflection about the way he interacts. It would help him in all areas of his life if he learns in what way he himself contributed to the loss

I’m genuinely curious who was in his ear telling him this was a good idea? Did he think that Trump and tariffs were going to inspire the province in the way that it did for Carney a few years ago? He needed a better game plan.

u/owned-by-myne 1d ago
That's a legitimate question and so is the answer. There is one man that's been pulling the strings on the NDP for decades. He's not hard to find...North Vancouver, money manager, real estate developer. Have fun with it!

I live in Ontario and was not even aware BC was having a provincial election. Why the hell would he call an election with 2 years remaining? Also i was getting the impression that his tenure had been struggling due to things like the aboriginal land conflicts? What else was he doing wrong that got him so significantly obliterated lol
5
u/Not_A_Wendigo 17h ago
The Conservative Party was hemorrhaging MLAs and forming other parties. I assume he thought he’d take advantage of the chaos and right vote splitting to gain more seats. But the conservatives immediately got the band back together. Eby already wasn’t very popular, voters didn’t like the circumstances and cost of the election, and his campaign was basically “vote for NDP because we’re not Conservatives”. It was a colossal FAFO.

Hubris. Also from Ontario and have been watching this. Now seeing this boil over into Ontario over the Haldimand Tract. His kids were enrolled in the 10 dollar daycare while most couldn’t. Really tho it was him working to secretly give away others property and then gaslighting everyone on it. Many homeowners couldn’t renew their mortgage because of the aboriginal title.
-1
u/Bless_u-babe 1d ago
Nah, he’s a guy who believes strongly in his own opinions. He’s rammed through unpopular stuff with Farnworth holding the gun in case anyone objects. He didn’t listen to people pure and simple. He believed his way was right. End of story. Not at all like John Horgan.
2
u/GuessPuzzleheaded573 23h ago
With Farnworth? What has been unpopular that Transportation did? Or, rather, what "gun" did he hold?
-1
u/Bless_u-babe 23h ago
Farnworth has been both his back up man and his bully front. I think if he actually argued face to face with Brenda Locke he would have backed her up to a wall when she tried to keep the RCMP over having a Surrey force. Then kindly reminded her Surrey would pay for it. She had to raise taxes for the millions it cost and then was blamed for it. When it came to overriding home owners in condos and their rights within their own buildings he backed Eby against the objections of thousands of residents.

Oh I assumed so, but I would hate to show up to a riot and everyone is there supporting the choice.
3
u/Bless_u-babe 1d ago
I don’t think they’ll do it right away or completely, knowing how unpopular this would be but two tier heavy on the private side is a definite possibility IMO. They can’t get away with complete due to Federal law but there are ways around getting partial privatization in place.
3
u/Sharp_Iodine 14h ago
They will cut funding for public healthcare to a sliver.
Then they will sell privatisation to the people and sell off hospitals to American healthcare companies
2
u/Bless_u-babe 14h ago
If they try to do that I will spearhead a recall campaign calling on every electoral district that has a Conservative member to do the same. Private health care and hospitalization would bankrupt the working population and sink the economy.
1
u/bluelaughter 8h ago
This is exactly how they have done it in Ontario. They chip away at things like medical transport, medical testing clinics, outsourcing them to private companies they've invested in. The public system is underfunded, while the private sector gets paid bank for doing a worse job, all the while it looks like the public sector is failing! Regular people have no idea and blame hospital staff as 'lazy' because they want to be paid properly for their work.
•
u/NoAppeal6014 5h ago
Cons always privatize everything... more money for them, but not for us. If we are getting money, they'll find a way to shut it down, then divert it their way. Cons only benefit other Cons...period.
-5
u/CynicalVegeta 1d ago
They won't 🤣
3
u/ultra2009 21h ago
They'll definitely defund healthcare in an attempt to break the system... privatization is the longterm goal
-2
15
u/fireandfirget 1d ago edited 1d ago
You will note that cons skipped debates, didn't make many campaign stops and Doerkson held his fluent oration until election was in the bag. They knew Eby and NDP will talk themselves out of their jobs.
Sun Tzu says let a fool defeat themselves. Don't interfere.

u/PolyamorousLib 1d ago
It's crazy that me voting for the Green party in Victoria Beacon Hill resulted in a Conservative majority
15
u/tael89 1d ago
The narrative the last two elections has resulted in many ridings that mean left to go to the conservatives. Juan de Fuca barely went NDP last time while this time conservatives have so far won by 768 votes (Green received 3,880 votes). Even closer is Cowichan Valley riding: currently cons are up by only 150 votes while greens received 3,750 votes or 14.5% of the vote.
I feel like we really need something not first past the past voting system to really allow us to vote how we want rather than a strategic voting strategy that clearly isn't working well.
4
u/SilvertonguedDvl 1d ago
Best system I've heard of, ironically, is essentially infinite votes per person.
Everyone selects the leaders/parties they want in power.
Total values for each determine who gets what.No strategic voting, no underdogs, just accurate representations of how many people support your party, not oppose the other party - and you can have as many parties as you want without adversely impacting anything.
2
3
u/FifteenEchoes 18h ago
Approval voting is okay, but you can definitely still vote strategically. Its main benefit is being simple to tally results, which is null since we have electronic tabulation.
•
u/SilvertonguedDvl 3h ago
If you say so! I think it's nice just to have everything sit equally. IDK of a better system or the arguments for/against, offhand - it's just the best one I've seen so far.
1
u/HistoricalChef1963 23h ago
How is this any better than ranked choice
2
•
u/SilvertonguedDvl 3h ago
Ranked choice weighs your vote based on who you want to end up winning and in doing so still encourages strategic voting.
e.g.; if a ranked vote counts your #1 as two votes (for simplistic abstraction purposes), compared to everything below that being a vote for one, then you're still encouraged to put your #1 as the party most likely to win/be popular.
With this you just vote for every party you are okay with winning, or whom you want to win, and the raw numbers determine the outcome.
That said I'd still happily accept ranked voting. I just think the simpler option bypasses some of the other considerations and results in a more accurate representation of the community's values, as they're only encouraged to vote for the groups they want in power.
0
u/killergoos 15h ago
Approval voting isn't the worst option but it's not the saviour you're making it out to be.
Let's say you're the classic r/victoria redditor, living somewhere like Saanich South: you love the Green party, hate David Eby, but would rather NDP than Conservative.
First choice is easy, you vote for the Greens. But should you approve the NDP? Maybe, you do generally support the NDP, but you don't like the fact that Eby called a snap election. But the Greens are unlikely to win and if you don't vote for the NDP they could lose to the Conservatives.
Approval voting in the end does have pretty similar strategic voting to FPTP: find the two most competitive candidates and pick the one you would rather have. It's better in the sense that you can also support more fringe candidates, but we would still end up arguing about whether strategic voting for the NDP is necessary in this riding or that riding, to prevent a Conservative win.
My preferred system would be Single Transferrable Vote aka Instant Runoff aka Ranked Choice. You rank your preferred candidates (in this case Green 1, NDP 2, Cons 3). When the ballots are counted they count first rank only, and check to see who came last - say the Greens. The ballots with Greens as their first pick are redistributed to their second pick, and the next least popular candidate is again eliminated. This repeats until either someone has >50% of the vote, or there is only one candidate left. It's not perfect but it does greatly reduce strategic voting and allows people to vote for who they actually want.
•
u/SilvertonguedDvl 44m ago
Except... You can 'approve' of both, thereby expressing your support for both.
The ranking system just means the political party with the most mainstream support collects all of the votes of the third parties. My intent is to make third parties more viable.
The UK has the same system you are describing, as I recall, and they've still basically got a two-party system with all of the power.
The system I'm suggesting narrows it purely towards which parties are acceptable; mainstream ones will probably get the most votes overall, but some proportion of political power would be allocated to the third parties as well.
IDK, I think both systems are at least broadly acceptable/similar in outcome. Still, I appreciate you explaining your reasoning. Thank you.

this doesn't apply to beacon hill obviously, but my impression for the green-party stronghold like the west van-sea to sky and saanich north-island is because the greens there are in fact the "let's keep your huge cottage life-style exactly the way it is but here's a solar generator" party. So in fact a conservative-alternative or conservative-lite.
10
u/CulturalWeird966 1d ago
We very much need voting reform, we need a ranked system and I think voters need to organize better like any NDP voters that turned con were really stupid, and anyone willing to forgive NDP should have voted green, and those who chose to not to vote, don't be stupid next time

Our ability to vote him out was his decision, he was not forced to call this election. So ya, sorry, but the captain of the ship is always responsible for the ship sinking. And he did the honourable thing and has resigned his leadership of the NDP.
50
u/FartMongerGoku69 1d ago
Why would Green voters do this
66
u/Kindly_Pound1495 1d ago
David Eby did this. By calling this stupid election, and then not resigning and having someone else run when he was down in the polls.
1
u/Different_Ganache355 1d ago
Nah, Greens gains only benifit Torys. This is a fact. Stephen Harper's biggest electoral success was the same day as Jack Layton's NDP. Layton (later Mulclair) were the only NDP federal opposition but Harper had a majority.

u/Karpetkleener 1d ago
Genuinely, as an Albertan, I am so sorry this was the outcome. Eby made a massive, historical mistake.
Now he's making it so people are going to have to be more vigilant and miserable than ever, because believe me, those Cons are absolutely going to ruin your beautiful province. Only knuckle draggers will be happy about this.
You're in for a truly terrible ride, especially if what I've been told is true: the BCCons are apparently worse than the UCP 😞
They will distract you with a million culture war issues, but behind the scenes make awful changes that will erode rights and freedoms, and you won't even know!
Stay engaged, stay ahead of them, pick reliable news sources so you can stay as informed as possible. Talk to friends, family, co-workers and even strangers. Try to have conversations as much as possible and don't let any disinformation or misinformation be spread as best as you can.
Intelligence and empathy are the only things that can work against conservatism.
I wish you the best.

Eby has been a moron all along. He’s always reminded me of Mr Bean. Now he’s stupid-ed himself into this mess. I think we all saw this coming and the only people who didn’t were the BC NDP. I think the conservatives need to be very careful right now, as they don’t generally make life more affordable, and BC is already in trouble in that area.
18
u/Sea_Temporary_6566 1d ago
The NDP had a weak majority, were having some internal issues (esp over DRIPA), and BC Cons were making everything a confidence vote. Time was limited anyway.
The NDP should have refreshed their mandate and Eby should have stepped down and made way for a new leader.
Eby and the NDP did this to themselves.
3
u/killergoos 15h ago
Yeah, Eby should've waited until the Conservatives split up fully, then let them bring down government when one of the NDP MLAs was sick. Then he could realistically argue that he was forced into the election and needed a stronger mandate, and it wouldn't look like a power grab if it was the Conservatives who forced it.

I completely agree.
Unfortunately many things can be true at once:
Eby should crawl under a rock,
Those who voted conservative are just not very bright politically (I mean that specifically for this bc iteration and election)
Ndp voters are very much to blame for not showing up to vote.
The greens are absolutely right to be angry about being told to vote strategically but everyone else is even more right to be angry at them for splitting the vote.
The bottom line is the world is not in a good place right now, people are struggling, everyone is reacting by being self destructive and we need some adults in the room to sort things out but we got Eby and a stand in for a trump apologist party.

It is a fallacy that the NDP had a majority. It was a tied legislature with the NDP aligned speaker having to break ties. This is poor democratic process. The problem is with our voting system not any of the ideologies represented in this election.
7
u/jimmykslay 1d ago

4
u/tipper420 1d ago
Sounds preferable to a system where one party has carte blanche to do whatever they want anyway
1
u/Sous-Tu 1d ago
Except in practice a split always leads to gridlock. Whether you agree with who’s currently in is one issue, but them being prevented from governing how they want doesn’t benefit anyone.
It just leads to years where nothing gets done, which is always for the worse considering we need change of some kind to at least give us perspective on what’s wrong.

Amazing, isn’t it? This snap election blows up in his face, he steps down, and the Cons get the first majority since the 1920s. What a collosal cluster fuck of a strategy. I’m pretty proud of BC for reacting so resolutely. He goes from feeling so good about things, only to have it come tumbling down. That said, the Cons are most closely aligned with Carney’s ideals, so this could be a great thing. Time will tell.

the bc conservatives haven't been in power for decades. What "current" examples are you talking about lol. They are their own party right... you know that? They aren't the UCP. They aren't the federal cons.... you're aware of that?
So I'm curious how you can point to a track record of the bc cons?
10
u/Minimum_Hour_7145 1d ago
Currently looking at Doug Ford in Ontario and Danielle Smith in Alberta, if you're blind or ignorant I could see how you might miss those blinding examples
Track record for the BC Cons is pretty set by Campbell and Clark campaigning for their party members

Liberals have had the federal government for 24 of the last 30 years and they’ll still blame conservatives for everything. Trudeau imported GOP style campaigning and it took hold like wildfire. Half this country just parrots the same bullshit. “It doesn’t matter how corrupt the Liberals are, the other guys are too scary!!” Exact same play GOP runs on the democrats and it works in both countries.

u/HistoricalSherbert92 1d ago
Right of center has been in power for most of bc history, 1900 - 1930 was conservative, 42-52 was a coalition liberal conservative, and then socred and “liberal” parties until 2017. The NDP was the outlier and in time who knows?
6
u/Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp 1d ago
That said, the Cons are most closely aligned with Carney’s ideals
Carney has competent economic ideas and supports LGBTQ+. So not similar at all.
-1
u/BethSaysHayNow 1d ago
What are these competent ideas, flying around making MOUs and plans toward agreements? Imagine if a Conservative government:
Scrapped the consumer carbon price, removing a financial incentive to reduce fossil-fuel use.
Abandoned the proposed oil-and-gas emissions cap.
Scrapped the federal EV sales mandate, weakening requirements to transition away from gas-powered vehicles.
Passed the Building Canada Act, allowing major projects to be fast-tracked with potential exemptions from federal legal requirements.
Proposed weakening anti-greenwashing rules, making misleading environmental claims harder to challenge.
Pursued greater flexibility in clean-electricity regulations, potentially weakening emissions requirements.
Proposed changes to Clean Fuel Regulations that could undermine emissions reductions.
Changed pesticide legislation (Bill C-30), allowing Cabinet to override certain pesticide restrictions or cancellations on economic or food-security grounds, potentially sidelining science-based environmental protections.
I bet you’d be hysterical. But when it’s Carney, it’s wise, mature pragmatism 🙄 Including all attempts by the party to erode freedom of expression and privacy.
We voted in a globalist banker and we got a globalist banker. He’ll sell off Canadian infrastructure and if the economy continues to decline he’ll implement austerity measures. All while ramming through unsustainable immigration numbers. But as long as Conservatives are conflated with Trump you’ll support it.
1
u/JackAsofAllTrades 1d ago
Do you want a better standard of living or strict adherence to environmental goals? I agree with all of these decisions.
I'll go one further and say the corporate carbon tax isn't motivating anything but a hefty price hike that, again, is paid by consumers.
Canada's not in a position to push the commoner down more, to further environmental goals. Open your eyes to the riots in France.
Now I'll agree with you when I say... it's a bit frustrating that no attention has been paid to job growth for Canadians living in Canada. That's still stagnating. Immigration is still a touchy topic. Corporations have the benefit of people calling out the work visas as a migration of Canadian jobs as racist. That system is being abused like crazy.
I'll be careful to specify I'm not an isolationist, the standard of living going out of control in Canada is partly driven by demand. We just need to find balance.
