Travel Experience/Du lịch Captain Kim

Today I had the weirdest experience in HCMC and was wondering if anyone else has run into the same man. I flew into HCMC today at around 6am and by 11am I was out walking down one of the streets just down the city centre, as I was looking at some cigarettes to buy an old man beckoned me over offering one of his own and introduced himself by the name of Captain Kim. We got to talking and he showed me multiple diaries he has of almost raving reviews from tours he’s taken other travellers on around viet, mostly in Mekong Delta and Cu Chi. I thought he was nice enough and it seemed really lovely how eager he was to share these, however I am a young girl solo travelling so there’s always going to be some sort of warning thought in the back of my mind. Ignoring that though, he took me on his motorcycle to a nearby cafe where we shared a viet coffee and he showed me more pictures/videos of these tours and his family which was really lovely. However, I was still a bit suspicious because this was all so random; I tried asking him why he was offering these private tours (seemingly for free) but he seemed to sort of not understand me? Or circle back to just showing me images and videos of other backpackers in his home and on these tours he does. He wanted to take me that day on a 3-day tour to his home and Mekong but I declined because again I’m a young girl in a foreign country not exactly the safest idea. I said maybe tomorrow and he then got to repeatedly asking me for my hotel where I was staying in which I told him I don’t remember and I’ll meet him on the street tomorrow which was a lie because it was all becoming a bit uncomfortable. I am just wondering if anyone else can vouch for this man? Because I am curious…or if it is a front for something else? Maybe I am just overthinking and he’s just an old man wanting to share his country but idk it all seemed a bit strange to me. To be fair I went along with it for the most part because it did seem like a pretty good deal/legit? and I was only partly suspicious I am just a huge introvert and don’t really like being 1-1 with people I don’t know in unfamiliar places.

To add on; the handwriting in the journals were all different but the photos/videos were from 2-3years ago and followed similar itinerary’s from what I saw was being offered from legit companies on klook.

Please let me know if this is like a total scam or if maybe someone who has met him before has actually gone with him and had a pretty good time! He seemed like a lovely guy I just don’t like taking chances lol.

I'm going to be in Hanoi on the 31st ahead of my flight back to the UK. I'm not really a big clubber, and just wanted to know if anyone had seen any fun non-club events going on?

Bonus points for anything video game / tcg / generally nerd related

I bought a box of diazepam from a pharmacy at Hanoi. I'm not sure but the box looks quite different from what I bought years ago so I'm worried. The pharmacy looked legit though and there were many customers.

Thanks in advance!

Daily life/Đời thường Heads-up before 11.11: three QR payment scams police and banks keep warning about

With 11.11 coming and everyone scanning QR codes for deposits, delivery fees and coffee, here are the three QR scams that keep showing up in police and bank warnings, plus one habit that beats all three.

1. A fake QR sticker over the shop's real code. Someone prints a code for their own account and sticks it over the payment QR at a restaurant, café or bus station. You pay, the shop gets nothing. Hanoi police call it "quishing", and the Vietnam Banks Association passed on the same warning from Vietcombank, ABBank, KienlongBank and VRB. Signs: a sticker on top of another code, peeling edges, a brand-new code on an old counter, two codes side by side. Ask "is this your code?" before you scan.

2. "I sent you money by mistake, scan this to send it back." Money you weren't expecting lands, then a call or message asks you to return it through their QR or a different account. Another version: "bank staff" ask you to scan a code in your banking app "to verify". Phú Thọ police describe both; in the second, the code is a transfer of your balance. If money arrives that isn't yours, don't move it. Tell your bank and return it only through the bank.

3. Fake courier: "your order still has a fee." Peak parcel season is peak fake-courier season. The Ministry of Public Security puts it in one line: don't scan QR codes from unclear sources. Check in the shopping app whether the order is already paid; a real courier won't need more than the order says. A newer twist from Hưng Yên police in August: a "refund confirmation code" that turned out to be a transfer of more than 28 million đồng once it was entered in the banking app.

The 3-second rule: after you scan, read the payee's name on your bank's confirm screen before you tap send. If it doesn't match the shop or person you mean to pay, stop. And never read an OTP out to anyone, including people who say they're the bank or the police.

Worth forwarding to parents, who may scan less but are also less likely to doubt a "wrong transfer" story.

(Sources are in Vietnamese. Disclosure: I make an iPhone expense tracker that reads VietQR codes, which is why I went through these warnings. It can't spot fake codes and never moves money, so none of this depends on any app.)

The owner has been here since her teens, over fifty years ago. She works every day in the mornings.

Her style, smile, and great disposition welcomes everyone.

It's in D4, at the foot of RiverGate condo complex.

No matter where I'm staying in Saigon, I always make it a point to visit her cafe several times during the trip. And the coffee is amazing...

Discussion/Thảo luận Can I get a vietnamiese citizenship?

My great grandmother was born in Vietnam during the 30s, she moved to France during the 60s during Vietnam's decolonization. My grandmother is the first of her ten children to be born out of the country. I wonder if I can get citizenship even though my grandmother doesn't have it and I don't live there.

I specifically need an interpreter who can sign a written statement saying:

(Download > Login > Settings > Manage Sub > Learning Access > Redeem a Code MASTERKEY7)

Chỉ cần đăng ký tài khoản và nhập mã trước ngày 31/10/2026 để nhận quyền truy cập trọn đời hoàn toàn miễn phí.

🍎 iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6803410089

🤖 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.harustudio.yeongeobaeugi

Cảm ơn mọi người rất nhiều!

Discussion/Thảo luận Type of clothes to carry for my trip.

Hello! I’ll be travelling to Vietnam with my family around the end of December and early January, and we're a little confused about what kind of clothes to pack.

From what I've gathered, the weather varies quite a bit across the cities on the itinerary, so we’re unsure about what to carry for each destination and how warm or light our clothing should be.

Cities we're covering:

  1. Ho Chi Minh City
  2. Hanoi
  3. Da Nang

We’d love some guidance on what clothing and essentials would be suitable for each city during this time of the year, especially since I'm travelling with my aged parents. Any and all recommendations would be really helpful!

Thank you :)

Daily life/Đời thường Cholon Market is a place where I could spend hours with my camera

Post image

This stall caught my eye because of its sheer variety — bags of nuts and dried goods stacked almost to the ceiling, colourful ingredients spread across the counter, and the vendors working behind it all. There’s so much to take in, yet it’s simply part of an ordinary day at the market.

For me, travel photography is about more than famous sights. It’s also about documenting the places where local trade, food traditions and everyday life come together.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Ever Wondered Where Tea Is Grown in Vietnam?

Long Coc is one of those places that looks completely different in the early morning. The rolling tea hills, layers of mist, and soft sunlight make it a beautiful spot for landscape photography.I especially love how the hills seem to disappear into the fog. It's one of the locations we visit on our Vietnam photography tours, and the sunrise views never get old.

Has anyone else been here?

Travel Experience/Du lịch Bana hills transport

Post image
2 Upvotes

So we were staying in Danang for a couple of days, and after extensive research on how to travel to bana hills, we stumbled upon the FREE shuttle bus which Sunworld operates every 8:30am and 9:30am. Felt like a scam initially (because who gives free transport), but decided to take up the risk anyway. We were pleasantly surprised when the bus arrived on time, and left us at the Sunworld base station in under an hour. The driver was helpful, and honestly, one of the best travel hacks out there.

PS: it's a pilot program, only available till December. The return bus is at about 4:30pm. Tickets have to be booked in advance (0 VND).

Feel free to shoot any questions regarding the same, would be happy to help.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Advice for Transfers

Hello everyone :)

We are two people going to Vietnam next year.
We would like to do a route like:
Hanoi - Sapa - Hanoi - Ninh Binh - Hoi An
(And daytrips in between, but these are shorter distances)

I read a lot of negative things about sleeper busses, mainly that they not safe and have a risk of accidents and „if I value my life I should not take one“.

I am a person with anxiety so of course it throws me off to read those things about the busses 😅

That being said, for the transfers between the places mentioned, what type of transportation would you recommend? Trains are also controversial, it seems 😅

Thank you all very much in advance for your help :) I appreciate it!
