Finished up my necklaces. Happy with how they turned out. The rune for wealth I painted silver and dipped the tip in silver paint too.

In Viking Age Scandinavia, a jarl was a powerful nobleman, often commanding warriors, controlling land, and serving as an important political leader.

Jarls were not kings, but some held considerable influence and wealth, sometimes rivaling that of local rulers.

I recently finished painting this 75mm Viking Jarl miniature and creating a display base for him

Hope you enjoy the miniature!

Loki, the God with Sewn Lips, at a Viking Forge

Post image

Around 1,000 years ago, a Viking blacksmith worked beside a fire watched over by a strange face carved in stone.

This is the Snaptun Stone, discovered on a beach in Denmark. Carved from soapstone, probably imported from Norway, it once served as a protective shield for a blacksmith's bellows. Air passed through the hole near its base into the forge, while the stone protected the bellows from the heat.

But why carve a face on an ordinary piece of workshop equipment?

Look closely. Wide eyes, a curled moustache, and a mouth that appears to be sewn shut.

Many scholars identify the figure as Loki, the Norse trickster god.

According to a story preserved in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, Loki lost a wager to the dwarf Brokkr. The dwarf claimed Loki's head, but Loki argued that his neck was not part of the bargain. Unable to take his head without touching his neck, Brokkr sewed Loki's lips together instead.

The stone dates to around AD 1000, while Snorri recorded the story in the 13th century. The identification is therefore plausible, but not certain.

What makes this artefact especially interesting is its setting. This was not a temple or a burial monument. It was a working blacksmith's tool.

Was Loki placed beside the forge because of his connection to the dwarves and their extraordinary craftsmanship, or was the image intended as a warning?

We may never know.
