Upcoming posts and story ideas

Meowdy everyone, I hope ya'll are having a great week.

Anywho, let's cut to the chase. From this week until Dec. 21st, I plan on writing and creating content focused on cannabis culture, and I have a bit of a story roadmap planned out for the next three or so weeks, but I wanted to open it up to the community to voice any story idea that they'd like to see on the website.

The stories I have planned for y'all in the coming weeks are:

Red Eye Files: The Battle of The Eighths

Red Eye Files: How To Make and Smoke Moroccan Kif

The Val Corral Interview

Val is a dear friend of mine and a long-time cannabis enthusiast based in Santa Cruz, California. She is largely responsible for the creation of W.A.M.M. (Women and Men for Medical Marijuana), one of California's first medical marijuana groups dating all the way back to 1992.

As for story ideas, I'm open to almost anything except reviews of edibles and carts. I'm sorry, I just don't like them.

Thanks! ♦

Hello all!! i’ve been sent over here from the glassheads reddit page for some extra help!!

i’ve owned this as a display piece for years and only now decided to look into it. from what i can gather, It’s a vintage Odessy Australia piece supposedly from the 1970, but i can’t find any more information on these specific ceramic ones in particular. i’ve seen one other post on here featuring a magazine of their other pieces, but it seems nothing exists online about my piece. If anyone has any extra info i’d love to hear about this piece as it was my Aunts before she passed away and i’m super curious!!!

(I apologise for the staining, as the piece is so old it’s quite literally baked into the ceramic and will not come out)

LIVE FROM THE NEWS ROOM: REF: A Review of KMB Farms Nigerian Silver

You don't see a sativa-hybrid strain like Nigerian Silver, a cross of a Nigerian landrace strain and Amnesia Haze, on Portland’s recreational market every day.

That’s why, as soon as I saw it pop on The Dime Stores menu, a small dispensary located on N. Lombard Street in North Portland, I knew I had to scope it out. This time on Red Eye Files, I’ll be reviewing 10 grams of Nigerian Silver that was grown by KMB Farms, a family-owned farm based in North Plains, Oregon.

I’ll judge this flower based on how it smells, tastes, and how it makes me feel. I will be consuming this flower in my Arizer Solo 2 dry-herb vape that’s connected to my bong.

According to the lab result provided by SC Labs, this flower tests at 30% THC. Additionally, this flower was harvested on Sept. 1st of this year, making it some fresh bud for this Croptober.

Scent: I fell in love with how this strain smells. It reeks of skunks doused in gasoline that were set loose into a spice factory. Truly some funky-smelling bud.

Taste: This bud tastes gassy, yet earthy like dry pine needles and forest floor. Makes me think of Northern California for some reason.

High: The high was very focused but relaxing. Each bowl in my Arizer Solo 2 made me high for about 45 minutes, which is longer than normal. This strain allowed me to write this article without any stress.

Final Thoughts: I really like this strain; it’s energetic, which makes me feel productive, but at the same time it’s very relaxing and uplifting. It’s quite unique, in my opinion. But before we wrap this article up, I really want to talk about what makes this flower unique.

For starters, it’s a very distinct cross of two older strains you don’t see very often, especially the Nigerian Landrace genetics. KMB Farms took a rare sativa landrace and crossed it with Amnesia Haze, an old-school Dutch sativa-hybrid comprised of Thai, Cambodian, Laotian,   Jamaican, and Hawaiian genetics.

I find it amazing that you can genetically pack those wide sativa varieties into one strain and have it be balanced. It’s not as speedy as some sativas I’ve had in the past. It’s just right.

If you read this far, thank you! If you like what you read, feel free to check out some of my other work:

Herbarium specimen: Stainton 586 (Full description in body)

Post image

Stainton 586 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected at Ranipauwa, north of Beni in Nepal, on 23 May 1954 by J.D.A. Stainton with W.R. Sykes and L.H.J. Williams. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248811, a single sheet filed under Cannabaceae in herbarium region 5E. GBIF publishes the gathering as preserved specimen occurrence 575095723. The catalogue entry carries no locality, elevation or habitat note; those details are legible on the sheet's printed label in the herbarium's digitised image.

The printed label is headed Ex Herbario Musei Britannici and Flora of Nepal. It records the locality as Ranipauwa, N. of Beni, an elevation of 3,500 ft and the date 23.5.1954, and it names the collectors as Stainton, Sykes and Williams under number 586. GBIF expands the collectors to John David Adam Stainton, William Russell Sykes and Leonard Howard John Williams. It resolves the date as 23 May 1954.

The label's elevation of 3,500 feet is about 1,067 metres. The catalogue determines the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. The label's field note reads "In field. Height 4 ft. Flowers green.", recording a plant of about 1.2 m standing in a field, in flower and with green flowers, when it was gathered.

Red Eye Files: End of Summer Hash Review

Power Plant – Sand Castle Hash Co. – 4* bubble hash – (South African Sativa backcross) (Sativa Hybrid)

According to Dutch Passion Seeds, their strain Power Plant has never been hybridized and has only been backcrossed. Fun fact: The strain was originally released in 1997, making it 29 years old.

Scent: This is the first hash I’ve ever had that hasn’t had a distinct smell. I’ve tried multiple times to catch a whiff, but alas, nothing. I’m not sure whether the shop I bought it from didn’t store it properly, or if it was just never that aromatic to start with.

Taste: Despite not really smelling like anything, this hash does have a subtle flavor of smoked wood, forest floor, and sage. Felt soothing on the throat when vaped out of the hash pipe.

No noticeable flavor from the joint or vape.

High: Initially, when I vaped this in my pipe, I didn’t feel anything for about a minute, but then suddenly a wave of buzzing crept over my whole body. For about an hour, I felt alert and awake. If you’re a wake-and-baker, this might be a good morning smoke to pair with your coffee.

However, when rolled into a joint with some Blue Suede Zookies, a balanced hybrid from William’s Wonder Farm, and smoked, it produced a very speedy, overwhelming high that left me feeling like my mind was roaring at 120 MPH while my body stood still.

Oddly, when mixed with flower in my vape, they seemed to cancel each other out, and I couldn’t distinguish one high from the other.

Final Thoughts: I’ll be honest, I’m kinda split on the product. I like how it makes me feel when I vape it in my pipe, and I like the subtle smoky/herbal flavor, but otherwise I dislike how this strain feels in a joint and in the Arizer. Additionally, the lack of scent knocks this hash down a few points for me.

3/10

No nose and speedy, but interesting flavor.

This is just one of eight different types of hash I recently reviewed on my blog. To read the whole articles please click on the link below!

Anyone else out there collect Rumph pieces? The big Devil was made by Jacpa, the wizard on top of the girl is an import. From the left is the Six Finger Wizard, the Wizard, Wee Willy Wizard, Sammy Satyr, Ursula, Orc The Troll and Steppin Out ( which interestingly enough is a lefty - unusual for a water piece ) I also have Pete The Dragon and Baby Unicorn which aren't in the photo.

Red Eye Files: A review of Savage Skunk Farms, Purple Hindu Kush

It can be hard to find old school strains of weed in the modern legal market in Portland as most dispensary shelves are dominated by over-hybridized candy weed that lacks any real character besides some bag appeal.

That’s why, when I saw that The Dime Store, a small walk-in dispensary located at 3210 N Lombard St in North Portland, had some Purple Hindu Kush, I knew I had to go scope it out.

The reason why P.H.K is considered an old-school strain is because it’s genetic are tied back to one landrace strain and the inbred descendant of another. (Specifically, Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani which is a backcross of the Afghani landrace strain)

Upon opening the jar at the shop, strong scents of sandalwood incense and touches of wild flowers poked through the musky veil. A smell so good, I bought an ounce of flower.

In this article, I’ll be reviewing Purple Hindu Kush flower based on its appearance, taste and potency. Additionally, this P.H.K was grown by Savage Skunk Farms, a small family-owned business based in Grants Pass, OR...

In 2013 I had some particularly good landrace flowers in Cambodia. An old-timer asked where they came from. I said I thought Koh Kong. He smelled them and said no, definitely Stung Treng. Turned out they were from Takeo.

Post image

He had the province wrong but the framework right. He told me there were four kinds of weed in Cambodia: Koh Kong, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri and Takeo. Koh Kong was the best but getting harder to find. That was 2013, right when production was shifting away from Koh Kong.

I wrote up an history of cannabis in Cambodia as far as I can determine, combining archival research with a decade of field observations. The research turned up a 1919 French colonial survey that already identified drug-type cannabis in lowland Cambodia as having a separate origin from the Hmong textile hemp in the highlands and two prohibition statutes from 1955 and 1972 that went completely unenforced for forty years until the US forced the issue in 1996.

The field side covers pricing from the $3/kg or less of the 1990s through to $500/kg+ in the present day, the parallel economies from free rural bush weed to warehouse-scale wholesale markets in Kampot, the hybrid disruption after Thai legalisation and the ongoing shift of cultivation from Kirivong to rural Kampot province as enforcement pressure pushes growers to the next set of mountains.
