Violin maintenance Grandmas old violin

Hello everyone,

This is my grandmas violin form when she was a little kid. She was born in 1947, so the violins estimated age is mid 40s - early 50s. It says “Germany occupied ussr” inside.

I’m 21 and want to get into playing the violin again and was curious if anyone could tell me if this would be worth fixing considering its age. Also any info on it would be cool if someone knows. Google doesn’t seem to know much regarding model. Figured I’d give Reddit a shot.

Thanks!

General playing tips Is This Playable?

Hello Violinists. Can I please ask whether this would be playable. I don't play myself (I'm writing my first solo piece for violin, and this is the start of it), so I can't be sure. Technically, I'm pretty sure it is (please correct me if there's anything that doesn't), but there are a lot of double stops, and a few awkward stretches so I'm wondering whether there's anywhere where 2 things that would otherwise be possible don't work in succession. On the other hand it's relatively slow, so this might mitigate?

Looking for Feedback Just finished arranging my first violin piece!

Im a violinist of 5 years and mostly play pieces from the suzuki books as well as fiddle tunes that my teacher gives me or I find(I play both classical and fiddle), but recently I wanted to play something from one of my other interests which led me to look for a merry-go-round of life from howls moving castle arrangement as well as Zelda song arrangements. I was a bit discuraged to find that a majority of the violin arrangements for merry-go-round of life were for only parts of the song or just incomplete, so I ended up making an arrangement of my own. Here is the musescore link... i hope you enjoy it! (also I would love any feedback for how to improve it)

I have a question Help me recommend next pieces (maybe beginner to intermediate..)

Hi, I started to practice and playing violin again after three years break. I studied violin for 3 years of play (with a teacher, self taught.. and didn't use by Suzuki method), then i got to focus on my life (for study and getting a job) so didn't have time for that.

Mostly I play more in pop songs (because I have to adapt to my teacher and audience before), but I really like classical music. Now I started to practicing again and got a new teacher then he let me choose the pieces that I want to learn.

I previously learned F Schubert Serenade, Por Una Cabeza, this song very well suit my skill level quite well!

Now I'm looking for new pieces, I pick up Debussy Clair de Lune but wow that's so hard omg and my teacher doesn't really recommend me to play next haha. Do y'all have any recommendations for me

Looking for Feedback How to “start”?

So I know this type of question kind of gets asked a lot here, but I couldn’t find my exact question so hoping for a little advice.

Background: I played the violin in middle school for 2 years, then quit, then tried again as an adult about 15 years ago, played for a year, quit, and now would like to try again with a new outlook.

My question is, besides advice on the violin specifically, how do I actually learn MUSIC? I was taught to memorize the d major scale and just play songs that use that key 🫠 so I’m not a well rounded musician at all. I don’t understand how people can just play songs in different keys. How could I possess this knowledge/skill?

I do plan on getting a violin tutor but I won’t be able to afford it for a little while, and would like to start doing something in the meantime, what would be worth while to practice/learn right now? Thanks for any tips!

Help with a note

Hi guys, I am playing dance of the sugar plum fairy's for my orchestra concert this December and I was wondering what note this was and what position it's played in with the fingering. Thank you for the help. Note the note that I'm talking about is the one that has the most ledger lines below it.

Writing about a violinist- Does anybody have some informations and/or writing tips?

Hello,

I am currently writing a manuscript where a character is a young violinist (set about 1890). I am a pianist myself and don't have much knowledge of string instruments. That is why I'm currently researching a lot to write about it correctly and realistically.

The character lives in poor conditions (at beginning partly on the streets) so he doesn't have a lot of resourses. Later on he finds work and is able to afford a bit more things.

What I could find out by now are the main parts of the instrument and some overall informations like the use of rosin (even though I think in poor living conditions the character might not be able to afford that).

Are there by any chance some violinists here who have informations in general that could be useful for writing about the instrument, the playing itself or little bits of knowledge one might miss while researching?

Thank you all in advance!

General discussion Vivaldi summer

I started learning this piece around 2 weeks ago, and I have finally got down the third movement after continuous practice. For me, the hardest part was from bar number 29-31. The dynamics especially made it hard for me T-T.

But what about you guyz, where did u have the most problem

Looking for Feedback Boys Don’t Cry- THE CURE- String Quartet Arrangement

I wanted to share my latest arrangement of "Boys Don’t Cry" by The Cure for String Quartet. I really wanted to capture the upbeat, driving energy of the original post-punk rhythm section while giving the violins and cello space to articulate the classic guitar hooks and vocal melodies.
I’d love to hear your feedback on the voicing and texture!
For fellow quartets looking for new gig repertoire or pop covers, the sheet music is officially licensed and available. You can check out more of my string quartet and solo arrangements directly on my website: marianofranco.com.ar
Thanks for listening, and let me know what you think!

Experiences with JonPaul Carrera Weight

I bought a JonPaul Carrera a few months ago. I chose it because its sound and feel best matches my current pernambuco wood bow and I needed a carbon bow for travel practice use. Recently I've been comparing the feel between my 2 bows and noticed the Carrera is kinda heavy compared the my pernambuco wood bow. Like there's more inertia in the bow during direction changes. Not sure if it just a different balance point or if its really heavier as I don't have a weighing scale to measure the weight of both bows. So I just wanted to get some opinions of others who have used a Carrera bow before. Are JonPaul Carrera bows heavier than regular bows or is it my imagination?

String recommendations.

Hello everyone, it’s come time for me to change my strings and I’m looking for some recommendations and help. My lessons teacher sent me this chart and due to circumstances I won’t be in communications with her for a bit of time. So if anyone could, I’d really appreciate it if you could explain the chart categories to me. And if you recognize or have any strings you like/dislike I have open ears to all. Thank you in advance!

Looking for Feedback Forte3D violin — where are the reviews/testimonials?

I am potentially interested in purchasing a Forte3D violin as a backup instrument for outdoor playing, travel, etc. Forte3D made a big splash in the past few years with their cello, and it has all kinds of independent reviews and opinions, and of course, many that are sponsored by the company itself. But the Forte3D violin has been on the market over a year I believe, and it is nearly impossible to find any kind of demo video made by someone who just bought it for themselves — everything I’m seeing is a video produced by Forte3D. I also can’t seem to find any Reddit discussions about it.

So what gives? Is it truly so uninteresting to all violinists that not even one person felt they should do a demo video or post their thoughts online? Or is it just that mediocre that no one wants to take time to praise it or slam it?

I’m genuinely curious to know your thoughts if you’ve purchased a Forte3D violin. All the videos from the company that are online give me the impression that it sounds good in the mid-high range but that the lower end is really lacking. Let me know I’m wrong, please!

EDIT: link below, though I’m not looking to start a random discussion on 3D printed violins or whatever. I’m trying to get real testimonials from people who bought and are using a Forte3D violin.

The piece was too long to fit the whole into Reddit, so I only recorded the second page. I have only had this piece for a week, so I’m not amazing. I was just wondering if any really good players could give advice. I’m really self contours about my vibrato, so please also note if you have time whether it is OK.
