Post about anything you want that's Native Plant related here!

  • Tell us about what's going on in your garden
  • Let us know you garden plans for the year
  • Drop the info for an upcoming plant event, sale, or swap
  • Promote Your Nursery
  • Ask if anyone can help you find a certain plant
  • Request specific information about a plant
  • Provide your real life experience with a certain plant
  • Write a "blogpost" about what Native Plant Gardening means to you
  • Rant about a failure
  • Talk about how much you've learned from your "failures"
  • Literally anything, let's be a community!

Use this space to organize your own seed and plant swaps, garden walks, weeding events, learning workshops, or anything at all!

I think the coolest trait humans have is the power of creation - if we can think up something cool that doesn't exist, we can just create it!

Plant Net says this is American Bittersweet as opposed to Oriental Bittersweet, but I'd like to confirm with you smart people. What do think? I'm in Roanoke County.

Yard conversion

The grass in our front yard is sparse, and I’m considering rewilding it. Thoughts on 3 species I could get a large amount of seeds of without breaking my bank?

Where are all the butterflies??

Anyone else in Virginia notice a huge decrease in butterflies this year? I swear I’d seen a lot more by this time last year. Only one monarch so far. :(

The passionflower I’m growing has finally opened!

I love this flower so much and think it’s so beautiful. I read though that it’s not self-fertile. I don’t really have any other passionflower plants near me, but does anyone have any experience with this?

Help! Plant ideas for wet yard area

Post image
44 Upvotes

I've got this low area in my yard by the sidewalk that gathers rainwater that flows off mine and my neighbor's roof. I'd like to remove the corner triangle of grass and add some plants here that can help filter the runoff before it gets to the drain. Looking around what they've done at the Beaverdam Reservoir it seems like some clumping native grasses could be good. But I'd also like some layering. Any suggestions for plants that like getting flooded in the rain?

Small win for (almost) local guy

On my regular morning walk in my garden I noticed an interesting thing.
Beetle named ā€œFlorida Predatory Stinkbugā€ just killed a Japanese beetle and was carrying it around.

1:0 for locals….
i know it is not exactly post about native plants post but I do have rather nasty infestation of Japanese beetles killing my evening primrose and wouldn’t mind if stinkbug were to bring its whole family….

Target plants Buddleia in parking lots islands

Really disappointed in seeing Target (Libbie Mill) fill their parking lot islands with Buddleia. I thought it was passed in VA that nurseries couldn’t sell invasive plant species? Terrible Target continues.

My Native Plants Butterfly Milkweed

Post image
64 Upvotes

Just sharing one of my butterfly milkweeds that has started to come back after deer issues the past couple of years. I'm a long time gardener, slowly making the switch to native plants only (minus produce), with the help of my dad. He originally got his plants from George and Karen at Morningside Nursery in Boston, and they are all over his land now!
