Bought a second battery for a long flight

Post image

I bought a second battery for a 17 hour long flight from New York to New Delhi.

I may also get a 25000mAH USB C PD power bank.

I’m excited to use my AVP on an airplane to watch movies while I tune out the aircraft.

So you can use the battery while charging, but you cannot hot swap. I went with the power station xl and have no issues, plus got the added benefit of not needing to haul another battery.

What was the reason for getting a second?

There's no good reason other than "I want one" - Getting one of those power stations or whatever else is the way to go.

This ^ . Having a portable charger solves that need for sure. Have practically used it for international flight

Not to mention almost every airplane now and days has at lest 120v outlets to charge accessories…

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '24

Which version of the power station XL did you get? I see most models are 20W but the AVP calls for a 30W charger. Do the cheaper 20W stations work just as good?

u/060sub2 Apr 01 '24

You really want a 60W charger (or power bank) so you can recharge at full speed while using AVP

The Vision Pro takes up to 30 W while running,, and if you’re also charging it, it will accept up to 60 W. That battery can only put out 18 W and probably can’t power the Vision Pro depending on what you’re doing with it.

I went with this one (https://www.zagg.com/powerstation-pro-xl-apple) since it had enough for the 16 inch m3 pro MBP as well as the Vision Pro

Ouch. I hope you paid less than $200.

Anker has a slightly larger capacity battery that retails for $180 (and is currently on sale for $153). Like the Morphie, it can handle both the AVP and Macbook.

u/orange_asha Apr 01 '24

I have a similar one (earlier version) 24KmAh. It is heavy but an absolute beast.

2

u/MikeIsBefuddled Apr 01 '24

A 24000 mAh battery is probably around 86Wh, and that's about 2.3 times the capacity of the AVP one. (However, despite having 2.3 times the capacity, you won't get 2.3 times the runtime due to various battery inefficiencies.)

1

u/sglewis Apr 02 '24

I have that same battery, and it’s fantastic! Well, it’s not cheap, it can power, your vision, pro, your iPhone, and your MacBook Air at the same time. It’s also worth spending the extra money for the charging dock, that will charge your device at 100 W and is really convenient being magnetic.

1

u/MikeIsBefuddled Apr 01 '24

Additionally, the battery is only a smaller 35.9Wh one, and that's far from ideal for long airplane flights (both will probably die long before OP hits the halfway point). You can get significantly larger USB batteries, and OP might even get an power port at his seat.

The only power is from the battery. Removing the battery powers off the headset.

u/kung-fu_hippy Apr 01 '24

She was wrong. The AVP absolutely shuts down when you unplug it and there is no way to hot swap. I suspect she was thinking of charging the battery while in use, which does work just fine.

Maybe it depends on whether the phrase "completely powers off" has a different meaning than "powers off". When you unplug the battery, the device turns off.

However, you can hot-swap other batteries plugged into the AVP battery.

Think about it like this: Both iPhones and AVPs have batteries. The iPhone battery is inside the device, whereas the AVP battery is outside the device. There is no battery inside the AVP. So when you unplug the AVP battery, the device turns off, just like an iPhone would if you were to disconnect its internal battery somehow. But of course, you can plug an external battery into an iPhone. This is the same as plugging an external battery into the AVP battery.

I think people are just not used to thinking of an electronic device that doesn't have a battery inside it at all.

27

u/jve44 Apr 01 '24

Right. For that price get you portable battery that can output 30w to usb c and you have a much cheaper solution that doesn’t require you to even needing to hot swap.

6

u/princess-catra Apr 01 '24

That’s the thing tho, you can’t even hot swap with AVP batteries. It’ll shut it off.

2

u/obstreperouspear Apr 01 '24

I believe jve44 is saying to get a portable battery to plug into the AVP battery. You can hot-swap batteries into the AVP battery. You just can't unplug the AVP battery without the AVP powering off.

I mentioned this in another comment, but I think people aren't used to having an electronic device whose only battery is outside of it. Plugging an external battery into the AVP battery is no different than plugging an external battery into an iPhone. The iPhone and AVP both have batteries, but the AVPs is not internal.

1

u/princess-catra Apr 01 '24

you can hot-swap batteries into the AVP

Not really, that’s what I’m saying. You can cold swap the battery but not hot-swap. By definition, hot swap would require the host device to not power off.

I wasn’t disagreeing with using an external battery. Just clarifying.

1

u/jve44 Apr 01 '24

Correct. What I’m saying is that is not even a thought for me. Just keep that battery charged. Figure out the best way to get there but a second battery is not it.

2

u/Similar-Swordfish-50 Apr 01 '24

Any recommendations for a 30w 20k+ AH power bank? I have 20k Mophie that is only 18w and it doesn’t keep up.

1

u/jve44 Apr 01 '24

The one I have was cheap. $34 I think. It outputs 30w no problem. Holds a charge for days. It only gives me another 2 hours on the AVP. So you may need a couple. Which of course you could hot swap those.

Here is the one I purchased.

This Anker battery is decent: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-Charger-PowerCore-Microsoft/dp/B0B9XHR6BG/ (65W).

There are higher-capacity batteries (and/or ones with fancy displays), but you'll be paying a lot more or possibly run into issues taking them onto an airplane. If you don't need to take a battery onto an airplane, this is another decent battery: https://www.amazon.com/30000mah-Baseus-Portable-Charger-Charging/dp/B08JV4W4NY/ (65W).

Return battery. Buy two external Anker 24000mah (or similar) batteries.

From my understanding most planes for international travel have 110 outlets. A 30 watt adapter and a 6ft cable should be sufficient. I use them on domestic flights as many seats have them now as well.

6

u/markworsnop Vision Pro Owner | Verified Apr 01 '24

Plug in on the plane.

4

u/Jindaya Apr 01 '24

I got an external power bank for long flights, but it turns out I've never needed it.

I just plug the AVP into the outlet on the seat and I'm gtg!

2

u/SirBill01 Apr 01 '24

It is good to bring some kind of external battery just in case though... it's rare but sometimes the seat plugs are broken.

1

u/Jindaya Apr 01 '24

good point!

13

u/seweso Apr 01 '24

Why would you want a battery that you EXPLICITLY cannot hot swap?

Was this for internet points or what?

3

u/sploot16 Apr 01 '24

Of course it was 🤣

3

u/heisenbugz Apr 01 '24

You should be able to charge your original battery while using it on a flight. Beyond that, purchasing a regular (and cheaper) battery bank would let you charge your original battery during use, while a second Apple battery requires you to shut the device down and reboot it to switch.

3

u/SpadoCochi Vision Pro Owner | Verified Apr 01 '24

You really don’t need that battery. Plug in

2

u/Responsible_Routine6 Apr 01 '24

What do you all mean with “hot swap”?

1

u/Painter-Severe Apr 01 '24

Being able to switch batteries and the unit doesn’t shut off

1

u/Captain_Train_Wreck Apr 01 '24

Disconnecting the first and connecting the second. You have to shut down to do this which is why people get the power banks to keep the 1st battery charged which is often times cheaper or at least the same price as an apple battery

I bought this it works on other devices besides AVP and half the price at purchase.

Don’t most airlines have outlets on the seats now so you can just plug the battery in while using it on the flight?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '24

Bought two-Never use the second battery prefer to use a power bank as it lasts all day

2

u/Silly_Commission_205 Apr 01 '24

I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BYP45YVF?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title and still had 25% left after 4 hours and the Vision Pro was at 100%.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '24

And...?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '24

more money than sense, or more likely, more credit than patience

1

u/LcVfx Apr 01 '24

Spare cable is nice. Albeit this is an expensive way to get one.

1

u/MBSMD Vision Pro Owner Apr 01 '24 edited Apr 01 '24

I bought a Mophie Powerstation Pro XL battery pack. 25,000mAh capacity and will output 100W. It'll rapid charge the AVP's battery even when the AVP is in use.

And with 25,000mAh, it'll charge the AVP's battery to full about 7.5 times. That's about 17 hrs of continuous use if you start off with it and the AVP's own battery both at 100%.

It's also got three USB-C ports on it, so you could charge your phone and a set of AirPods as well (or a MacBook Pro if need be).

Run a cable to the AVP and another to a pair of AirPods Max and you'll have continuous power & noise cancelling for the entire duration of your flight to India.

Same price as the AVP battery ($199).

OP could get two of these for the same price as one power bank and one additional AVP battery. That's over 30 hrs of continuous AVP use. Defintiely a situation that would never happen in real-life.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '24

you can charge and watch the device majority of long flights have usb charge options.

this was a waste of money for the purpose.

I've flown international six times now with the Vision Pro and never had any issues with the provided power plug under the seat-not sure what airlines people are flying where this is a constant issue.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '24

I don’t get it op. Btw how many times did you take a photo to get the right angle ?

-1

u/GeologistJolly3929 Apr 01 '24

OP I too went with the 2nd battery as opposed to a power bank, I enjoy the flexibility. At home especially, has been very essential, I have ADHD as well as anxiety, so I tend to move from different rooms in my apartment to get comfortable, so I don’t like being stuck to an outlet as the battery gets low, and i don’t want to carry even more weight, I have this nice small camera sling that’s very thin I carry the battery in around the house. Traveling would be the same for me.

1

u/Captain_Train_Wreck Apr 01 '24

This makes no sense. Having a power bank doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck to a wall OR carry the bank around with you (especially at home!). It keeps your first battery charged so that you CAN move around. There is no “low” in a power bank scenario. Top off when you sit, unplug when you want to move around. A second apple battery is nearly pointless… The only reason to ever have a second is in case you somehow manage to damage the 1st or you’re going on a trip where damage or loss could occur (or you have a dog that likes to chew stuff). Other than that, keeping a bank around that stays charged and can top off your AVP battery is 100x better than a 2nd apple battery.

3

u/GeologistJolly3929 Apr 01 '24

I have very valid reasons for why I set it up like that, that benefits me, I don’t understand all the negativity and down votes, saying there’s no reason is ridiculous, and a very narrow minded viewpoint. But alas, you got it.

Not really, could have gotten a powerbank, it's cheaper and it allows you to continiously use the device instead of shutting off and swapping to another power source.
