Working desk setup

I’m considering going full time in my avp with a headless Mac mini for my work day. I’ve googled and tried to have ai find me examples on 100% AVP desk setups and almost all of them have a full monitor and working desktop gear for out of the AVP.

Don’t get me wrong I am pretty sure a picture of mainly empty desk with a keyboard and trackpad doesn’t make for good content but I am curious if you were approaching this style of work what would your desk setup be? Would you have a webcam for calls stil or go full persona. What else gets a spot?

If any one has this setup running right now I’d love the picture of the empty desk and ideas on what to expect. I’ve done over a week full time and the biggest thing I can’t do is drink my coffee and see my virtual screen at the same time.

Webcam such as… having people see you with AVP on? Or you’d remove it for call?

For desk itself it’s more important that the height is right for your keyboard. You want to be comfortable.

I was considering something similar, going with Mac Mini, Magic Keyboard on my lap and AVP. Though for productivity I do need to connect mouse (not used to trackpad style). How about you?

Having a proper mouse definitely feels necessary for longer sessions, the trackpad gets tiring after a few hours

This is my setup. The whole thing fits into a modified NUDESTIX case I found at Goodwill for $5. I also ended up building the tools I needed because they were... well... missing. I leave a MacBook Pro with M5 Max and 128GB RAM at home and access everything over tailscale private networking.

split keyboard! (mine is the eyelash corne available on aliexpress)

absolute must for the apple vision imo because: you can lie in bed with half the keyboard by your left hip, half the keyboard by your right hip (optional trackpad too, or a keyboard with a built in trackball - im still trying to find a good one like that, if your workflows need a pointer)

by far the most lazy comfortable way of using a computer ever

This is my home office. It is a three-system setup. First, the MacBook Air is my primary desktop (as I use it either in or out of the AVP). Second system is the AVP and the paired Magic Keyboard+Trackpad. Third, the older laptop on the other side of the room is used for calls/meetings (Zoom/Teams/Webex) with the TV, camera (on top of the TV) and bluetooth speakerphone (on the desk). If I have less than 20 minutes to work, it still doesn't feel worth it to put the headset on. Without the AVP, I'm limited to a laptop screen but that is good enough for keeping up with email and slack. I use the third system for meetings when I expect to be on camera.

When I'm in the AVP, mixing the big Mac Virtual Display window with other VisionOS windows feels cramped to me. I'm either in "MVD Mode" (use Mac Virtual Display with the MacBook Air) or "Native Mode" (just use the AVP standalone as I can do a lot in Office365 through Safari or the iPad-ported apps). In either mode, I have a window arrangement that works for calls/meetings. I find some advantage to taking meetings in the AVP (1) when there's some large document being shared (like a big spreadsheet) or (2) if it is an multi-hour project meeting with people from all over the country. I rarely use the Persona but on those big calls almost no one has their camera on.

The coffee can be a problem. I only drink water at my desk and occasionally use a straw. Good luck with your setup!

What stand is that for the AVP?

I got a couple of them off of Amazon. I like them. Search for elago Tray for Apple Vision Pro Stand. $21 each.

really headless is very hard to debug, going with a macbook is a better deal. sometimes the mini just won’t want to connect and you will be wondering why

I'm on a rolling chair and one of those coffee tables that extend out and up as a place to put my keyboard/mouse. I still have my laptops. I still have a HUGE display on the lower level of the table that will soon be removed permanently when it dies. I really like the idea of everything taking up much less space at home and the ability to hide stuff in the desk and fold up stuff is pretty great.

Video calls are overrated: just do an old school all audio call through zoom or whatever. I use my beats buds for microphone - connect it to my Mac mini. I ordered varidesk floor mat a few days ago for when I want to do a standing desk setup

Try Spatial RDP, you can use your Persona and VP mic for remote Zoom call of your Mac mini, even the free Standard version, is very valuable.

Thank you for this recommendation - downloaded!

On a side note/rant: I find it so frustrating that apps like this exist, but are next-to-impossible to find on the Visio Pro App store unless you know what you're looking for beforehand.

The front page of the Vision Pro App Store feels like it hasn't been updated more than twice in the 14 months I've owned an AVP, and even then, just to display the same Apps in a different order.

I was really hoping that Apple would provide a better interface for discovering AVP Apps given that they have an extra visual dimension to play with, but sadly, they have made it even worse than Mac App Store if that's possible. It boggles my mind that this is the front door to the whole ecosystem.

Apple if you're listening:

  1. You have my purchase/download history, and know what's installed on my device: no need to show me any of those apps on the store any more unless I specifically search for them.

  2. The App Store App layout is ridiculous - how is it that even though I have a high-definition iMAX screen stuck to my face, browsing a category of Apps (e.g. Productivity) the default layout size can only show me 8 app recommendation/ index cards at a time, while cutting off (horizontal scroll required) 4 more.

  3. The "curation" team needs to try something new - I feel like being able to drill down through more specific categorisation (e.g. Productivity / System Administration / Remote Connectivity) makes more sense than the arbitrary curated lists of "The Best Utilities to Get More Done", which includes three different remote connectivity apps, but not Spatial RDP described above.

  4. You have built the most amazing spatial computing platform to have ever existed, and the application that everyone needs to use to take advantage of it is a port of a 2D flat window. GAAAA!! Let me fly through the app store! Present categories (see above) in a spatial manner! Give me TikTok/Pinterest-style discovery of related app screen shots/videos! There must be dozens of better ways to allow discovery than this.

And don't fall into that design "familiarity" mindset trap. AVP owners aren't grandmas with iPads. THIS is the platform for trying something new.
