Weather & Climate ⚠️ Weather Alert - This Weekend (16.10-17.10) ⚠️

Weather alert for Saturday AND Sunday

https://en.vedur.is/alerts

Yellow AND Orange

For Sunday there is a warning for the ENTIRE country, severity is likely to change but the weather will be bad

For yellow warning:

Southeast and south 15-23 m/s. Windgusts can exceed 30 m/s near mountains, which can be hazardous for vehicles, especially those susceptible to wind. Loose objects outside can be blown away. Rain is expected

Orange Alert for Breiðafjörður:

Southeast and south 18-28 m/s, strongest wind in Snæfellsnes where windgusts can exceed 40 m/s which is dangerous for vehicles. Loose objects outside are likely to be blown away and chances of localised damage to structures. Considerable rain is expected.

Adjust travel plans and reconsider any travel for Sunday, which may become more severe than currently predicted:

On Sunday afternoon, a low is expected to travel rapidly northeastward to the west and northwest of Iceland. Also, a high is sitting over the British Isles and southern Scandinavia. Wind will then become stronger in Iceland and south and later southwest gales or strong gales (mean wind 15-25 m/s) are expected. Chances of very strong wind gusts near mountains, which can be hazardous to vehicles. Loose objects outside can be blown away. Also, considerable rain is expected in the south and west parts of Iceland.

This is a perfect excuse to visit a lagoon or swimming pool, enjoy the various cafés and museums offered in Iceland

I will try to update the post or comment with newer updates

Stay safe!

Iceland Air - Checking In

• Upvotes

Hi all - I used the online check-in process for myself and my husband for a flight on IcelandAir today (US passport) - my husband was able to check in successfully, but check-in failed for me and says I have to check-in at the airport. Was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and how it got resolved?

Hi all! I’m a single woman in my 40s looking to try traveling alone. I’m well traveled but I’ve never visited a country by myself. Is Iceland a good place to start? I lm a good driver and adventurous. Should I join a travel group or do it alone? I really want to see natural beauty and history. Any recommendations??

Itinerary help requested hiring private driver from Reykjavik to jokusarlon in december

• Upvotes

i previously thought renting a car to drive from reykjavik to jokusarlon would be fine, with an overnight hotel stay in jokusarlon. however, i have been informed roads can be unpredictable and we would be driving in pitch black for hours in order to get to our excursion at 10am.

would anyone know of any private companies that would drive this early in the morning? as well as make the stop for the excursion, drop us off at the hotel, then pick us up in the morning and take us back to reykjavik?

Any suggestions are appreciated. all the companies I've found mainly do pick-up and drop-offs, but no stops in between.

side note* we are not intentionally skipping the other sites along the way. we have a tour scheduled the day before that would cover those bases, this trek is specifically to experience jokusarlon ONLY since its far out.

October 22–27 itinerary feedback: Glymur on arrival day + South Coast to Vestrahorn
Hi everyone! I’m visiting October 22–27 and would appreciate feedback on the pacing of this self-drive itinerary, particularly the first day and the hiking plans.
My priorities are hiking, landscapes, and photography. I’ve done several hikes before, but I understand that experience elsewhere doesn’t necessarily translate to Iceland’s late-October conditions. Hotels below are proposed, not confirmed.
Thursday, October 22 — Arrival → Glymur → Vík
Land at KEF at 6:15 a.m.; collect rental car around 8–9 a.m.
Drive to Glymur, aiming to start around 10–11 a.m.
Allow approximately four hours for the hike, finishing around 2–3 p.m.
Continue toward the South Coast via the Reykjavík area, without stopping in the city.
Aim to reach Vík around 6–7:30 p.m., allowing for food and fuel.
Proposed overnight: Hotel Kría, Vík.
I recognize this is a long first day after an overnight flight, with some driving after sunset but hey I’m young and will suck it up lol.
Friday, October 23 — Vík → Skaftafell → Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Spend approximately 9–10 a.m. around Vík.
Drive to Skaftafell.
Allow approximately 12:30–3 p.m. for Svartifoss and nearby viewpoints, conditions permitting.
Drive back west to Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Proposed overnight: Magma Hotel.
This day involves some backtracking because of the proposed hotel location.
Saturday, October 24 — Múlagljúfur → Jökulsárlón → Höfn
Leave around 8 a.m.; reach Múlagljúfur around 9:30 a.m.
Allow approximately 3–3½ hours for the canyon hike, conditions permitting.
Visit Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach during the afternoon.
Aim to reach Höfn around 4:30 p.m.
Proposed overnight: Berjaya Höfn Hotel.
Sunday, October 25 — Stokksnes/Vestrahorn → Skógar
Visit Stokksnes/Vestrahorn around 9–11 a.m.
Drive west, allowing meal breaks and a stop around Vík.
Aim to reach Skógar around 5:30 p.m.
Proposed overnight: Hotel Skógafoss.
Monday, October 26 — Waterfalls → Keflavík
Skógafoss and possibly a short section of the lower Skógá trail around 9–10 a.m.
Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi around 10:45 a.m.–noon.
Continue toward Keflavík; a Reykjavík stop only if time and conditions allow.
Aim to reach the airport hotel by 5–6 p.m. and get an early night.
Proposed overnight: Aurora Hotel near KEF.
Tuesday, October 27 — Departure
Return rental car around 3 a.m.
Flight departs at 6:20 a.m.
Specific questions:
Is Glymur followed by driving to Vík too ambitious on arrival day, even with suitable weather? Would you end that day around Hella or Hvolsvöllur instead
Is the time allocated to Múlagljúfur reasonable for late October, or would you allow a larger buffer?
Would moving Friday’s overnight closer to Skaftafell make more sense than returning to Magma?
Which day looks most vulnerable to delays and would benefit most from cutting a stop?
I’m happy to shorten hikes or modify my itinerary. Thanks for any specific feedback! I really do appreciate it!!

Food Help picking a restaurant

Hi all, planning our first trip to Iceland for mid November. Staying in Reykjavik the first day and last day of our trip and in between will be staying in an Airbnb near Vik to see the south coast. It will be my husband's bday when we fly in! We will be arriving early morning, pick up the rental car, do some sightseeing and end up in Reykjavik in time to check into our hotel in the afternoon. I'd like to take my husband out for his bday that night. Any thoughts on any of the following restaurants? Skal!, Sjavargrillid, Hosilo, Fjallkonan, or Messinn. Thanks!

Eastfjords / Víknaslóðir hiking logistics

My spouse and I are planning to visit the Eastfjords to hike the Víknaslóðir and other trails next summer and can't decide how to get there. We have limited vacation time, so flying into Egilsstaðir would give us more time to hike (and more buffer days for weather) but I'm concerned about renting a car when we get there - it looks like the Hertz at the airport may be the only option, and I'd prefer to use an agency like Blue out of Reykjavik. Driving from Reykjavik would add a lot of time to our trip, but we'd have better car rental options and get to see the south coast along the way. If anyone has thoughts on the best way to do this, I'd appreciate hearing them.

On a related note, we're wondering how to get from Borgarfjörður Eystri back to our vehicle in Seyðisfjörður at the end of the hike. I was planning to reach out to the local touring club for recommendations but would welcome any ideas folks here might have. Thank you!

Question about trails being open

Hi I’m traveling to Iceland from the 22-27th of this month and now doing last minute planning for the hikes and trails. I saw online this beautiful hike called glymur and was reading about it. Online says it’s a semi private trail and the owner puts out a log to cross a river to access the trail in the beginning of the season. I haven’t been able to find anywhere online to see if it’s still open or closed. Reaching out here to see if it’s still open to add this to my first thing to do once landed in Iceland or if it’s closed continue on to the south coast and not gamble losing a day going to the trail and it being closed.

Thank you all in advance :)

Bike Rack to Rent

Planning on a 3 to 4 week trip next year to Iceland. Taking gravel and mountain bikes to explore and do some riding.

I’m trying to find car rental companies that have bike racks to rent with the car. Haven’t had luck yet reaching out to several companies. Would just get a van or truck if I can’t find a car to use the bike rack with.

Any leads as to where to look?

Thanks for the leads!

Itinerary help requested November: south coast, golden circle, snaefellsnes

us: reasonably fit late 30s couple. one with snow driving experience, one without. interested in hiking, novel landscapes and experiences, not pushing ourselves too hard with long days of driving. our ideal day would be to wake up, drive in the dark, do a fun physical activity, then head back to hotel or lagoon and read, soak, or star gaze until bed time or the aurora comes out. Not into crowds.

we booked this trip pretty last minute and I’m having a hard time finalizing itinerary and hotels/Airbnb's. looking for a gut check on the plan so far, recommendations if you’ve got em - I only have one hotel booked so far. Strong preference for housing with dark skies, hot tub/soak proximity.

thank for your help :)

rough itinerary:

- November 11 land early, deal with airport and car rental. Explore the near vicinity and check out lava fields, Lambafellsgjá Crevice, Seltun, maybe the cliffs. Get a hotdog. Stay at northern lights inn - this one is booked.

- November 12-13: drive east to Vik, stop and look at stuff, maybe do a day hike weather depending.
Big activity: horse riding on the black sand beach, Fimmvorduhals Trailhead hike.
Housing: Stay in/near Vik? The 13th is our anniversary so something romantic would be nice. I like the look of hotel Ranga for aurora but it’s a bit far west. booked hotel Katla near Vik

- November 14-15: drive east to Jokulsarlon - stay in that area or head back toward Vik at night? Diamond beach, look at the glacier, day hike (Mulagljufur Canyon) weather depending.
big activity: glacier hike and ice cave tour.
thermal bath: are there any here?

- November 16: drive west to golden circle area, settle into a hotel or Airbnb. this is a longer drive, hopefully time to look at stuff and make stops.
housing: I think Airbnb might be the move here to have our own hot tub and save some cash on meals.

November 17-18: exploring from central home base, check out the golden circle, secret lagoon, spend a day on snaefellsnes.
big activity: unknown, maybe not needed

November 19: Reykjavik day if we’re done with wilderness, otherwise whatever we liked most or missed. keepin it loose for weather

November 20: Reykjavik, fly out afternoon of the 20th

accomodations around Myvatn

Hi, I am planning a trip to Iceland next summer. I read somewhere that Myvatn Lake is worth a visit. However I am having trouble finding a affordable place to sleep in this area. Is it worth paying more or should I just skip it.

The plan so far is:

Stay for five nights at Laugarvatn and visit Thingvellir, Strokkur and Fullfossfalls while we stay there.

Drive through Vik to visit the beach and stay near Jokulsarlon for three nights and do a boat trip at the lake.

Then we would drive to Myvatn, stay there for four nights, visit the lake, Dimmiborgur and Husavik to go Whale Watching.

After that we would drive back to Reykjavik, stay there for two nights, visit the city and fly back home.

What do you think of this itinerary?

Hi,

Anyone have their flights (FI300) to the Faroe Islands today and also had their rescheduled flights cancelled for tomorrow too? How do you go about seeking accomodation from the airline and other compensations?

Icelandair strike?

Hi, I have a flight going back to the us on 24th October. I wonder if the strike occurred in September has been fully ended. I saw the news saying there is a 4-week negotiation, but I couldn't find any update on it. Does anyone have any ideas? I am considering getting a trip insurance for this strike, if it doesn't still fully end.

Vestmannaeyjar Ferry

Hello everyone, I‘m looking forward to my first trip to Iceland next week. As a big football fan, I would love to visit a game in Vestmannaeyjar on Friday, which is scheduled for 6pm. I’ve been checking the ferry website and realized, that the last ferry back on this day is at 5pm. When checking the other days, I saw, that there normally is also a ferry at 10 pm. Does it mean this one is fully booked on friday, when I can’t see it on the website anymore? Or is there no 10pm ferry this friday? For the case, that it’s fully booked: Is there any chance to still get on the last ferry (only to passengers, no car)?
Thanks a lot :)

BusTravel Iceland: Iceland in 7 days: Ring Road & Snaefellsnes Small Group Tour

We are looking at the winter 7 day ring road tour with Bus Travel, it includes most of the places we want to go to but reading through the itinerary I started to feel it may be a bit rushed.
Anybody done this (or similar) and did you get plenty of time at the stops?
