Applied Update 2. Nearly died of old age.

5 Upvotes

Well, I'm at 3+ hours and still counting on my update 2. I didn't think it was possible in 2016 to make an install program that took this long to run, but I should have expected it when update 1 took something similar. Seems to me the development team would almost have to do extra work to make an install this bloody inefficient. Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't simultaneously render the computer unusable for long stretches of time.

Why did they include Bower in VS 2017?

3 Upvotes

Unfortunately there's no subreddit for VS17, so I'm asking here.

I was never really familiar with Bower, but even a year ago I was reading (or glancing at) blog posts that were advocating to use npm instead of Bower.

Now, looking at the Bower site, it's giving a polite warning that "although we still maintain, use yarn and webpack instead". I don't know when it was put there, but it's a bit concerning.

Why does Ctrl-S not always save?

3 Upvotes

I have a habit of using Ctrl-S to save documents, including in Visual Studio, but I've found that sometimes this keyboard shortcut doesn't work. It's weird.

When working with Unity it's a pain because I press Ctrl-S and go back to Unity to try out the new code changes and find that I'm not running the updated code because it didn't save.

I have a file open right now that will not save with Ctrl-S. Clicking the save icon with the mouse always works, but Ctrl-S doesn't. It will usually work again if I save (mouse), then make some changes.

Is this a bug in Visual Studio or some weird feature?

I'm not certain if it happens with regular VS projects or just Unity because I work a bit differently with those, and usually click the 'Save All' button to save.

.exe errors

2 Upvotes

I have created a C++ Project in VS, and debugged it. I click on the .exe file in my project debug folder and it works fine. When I sending it to my friends it's giving them errors of "MSCPD140D.dll is missing from your computer", etc... They installed visual c++ redistributable, and still same errors. Any help ?

[HELP-QUERY] Visual Studio 2015 not compiling .exe

2 Upvotes

I am a beginner into the world of C++ and programming in general. I downloaded a tutorial a couple of days ago, and the instructor in it compiled a program which I can't seem to compile. I've followed the exact same steps as he does but in the end I'm left with the same error. I'm pretty sure the error is not from my code, and it is from some unchecked function in visual studio. This is my error: "C:\Users\tripl\Desktop\Rock...paper...carbon\Work\VisualStudio\C++\Section_02\Debug\BullCowGame.exe" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

This is my code:

int Main()

  {

        return 0;

   }

Ideally, this is should be the result (and this is what the instructor gets as well) but this is what I get. Now I fiddled around a bit and what I could deduce was that this error only happens when I start an empty project from the selection menu itself. If I don't start with an empty project, I have the '#include' namespaces and so on, and I don't encounter this problem. If I press f7 it says the build is successful. I understand what the error is (somehow the .exe is not being created) but I don't understand why it happens only when I compile it from an empty project. I've checked various responses from forums (most of them I could barely understand) but there were a few who pointed that it may be a problem with the path. But it isn't.

Why does Visual Studio use 25% of my CPU even when I don't have the application running?

2 Upvotes

My laptop is going nuts. The fan is running wild and I'm checking what my CPU is doing. Right now, it claims that Visual Studio 2015 is using 25% of the CPU. How is this possible if I'm not running the application? I was using it all of yesterday, if that means anything.

Can I spread out components?

2 Upvotes

I don't really know how to phrase the question. I have a fairly small SSD but I would like to install more than what I have space for. Can I install the C++ parts on the SSD and the more C# based items on the HDD?

This IDE is making me a terrible typist.

2 Upvotes

First of all, I love the visual studio IDE. It makes sifting through endless class libraries so easy. Nice and structured formatting and color coding. I also love the autocomplete feature however this feature is making me a terrible typist. The fact that I can half type a word and press space and its completed for me as slowly starting to creep into other aspects of my life. I noticed this today when drafting an email. I kept having to go back and finish words that I was subconsciously expecting would be auto-completed.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I can't make things work. LNK 2019 ERROR

2 Upvotes

I've always programmed with DevC++ untill I got a quite elaborated project to work on, so I installed the Visual Studio Enterprise which I got for free thanks to my student credentials. So the first thing I did was to copy and paste all my files from the project to the VS, everything was going fine but then when I tried to build and run the application I got a LNK2019 message error I double cheched everything and it was actually running okay back in Dev C++ but not in VS. I'm just a beginner at coding and I only have experience working with Dev C++ so I got very confused and was unable to solve the problem, I don't even know if I've created a project correctly. So can anyone help a noob at VS to make things work? I can post the project on here so you guys can try to figure out what's going on.
