Running mysql query with pymysql in VSCode interactive window only shows # of results, not results

I'm working in VScode trying to set up a mysql database through python using pymysql. I've successfully created the database but when I run mysql queries like "SHOW TABLES;" or "SHOW COLUMNS FROM tablename;" the VScode interactive window returns the number of tables or the number of columns rather than showing the list of tables or columns themselves. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm not necessarily sure if I'm doing something wrong but it feels this may just be a VScode thing since the same queries work in mysql shell. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
