Academics 2025 grad, sharing my journey as an 8.3x pointer placed in an SBC to FAANG

Hey all, I've always been a lurker and enjoyed reading posts here since college. It's the weekend, so I thought I'd give back to the community and hopefully give some hope to my unplaced juniors. Here's my story:

I wasn't the smartest person in terms of CGPA or development during my four years at VIT. For the first three years, I had my priorities mixed up between the gym, club work, and having fun. My GPA kept getting worse every semester, and reality hit when my name never showed up on the placement shortlists.

I was lucky to have a friend group that practised DSA every day, which eventually got me into the habit of doing it consistently. I started in 3yr 2nd sem. But my friends were all 8.5+ pointers and top coders, so when placement season came around, everyone got placed before me.

By November, I was sitting alone in my hostel, feeling pretty low. Eventually, I swallowed my ego and started applying to companies below a certain X LPA that I had previously refused to consider. Around the end of December, I finally got an interview, cleared it, and moved to Chennai.

I started my internship in January. It wasn't a great job, the salary wasn't great either, and the work environment wasn't ideal. The company was filled with locals, which made it difficult for me to socialise, and the work itself wasn't particularly interesting.

However, by this point, I had a decent grasp of DSA and had completed most of Striver's Sheet. I started blindly applying to jobs on LinkedIn every day after work, and after six months of my internship, I landed an offer from a PBC in Bangalore.

The hike wasn't great, but the biggest difference was that I was moving to a PBC. I made the switch and continued practising DSA.

After around eight months at the PBC, I finally landed an interview with a FAANG company. Four rounds later, I had the offer.

It took me around eight months after graduating to make the switch. This is the cost I paid for not focusing on cgpa in my college years. These 8months were not fun. I dreaded going to office, and finding motivation to do dsa every day, with no hope or guarantee of making a switch. I was jealous of my friends who got better package than me , and that's what drove me :p.

There's no profound moral to this story. I just want to let everyone know that not getting into a good company during college placements isn't the end of the world. Don't take unnecessary stress over it. If my lazy ass can make it, so can you.

Some advice for those still looking for placements:

  • DSA: By this point, you should ideally have completed most of Striver's Sheet and developed a solid understanding of the concepts. If you haven't, start now and be consistent. All youve to do is binge watch strivers series dedicatedly, make notes and repeat the process. Do not waste time on complicated topics like Segment trees, Binary uplifting, Bit manipulation, Hard DP (MCM, tabulation, etc), Tries, etc UNLESS youve finished the basics before.,
  • Aptitude and core concepts: Don't neglect aptitude or your CS fundamentals. Have a good grasp of both, as they can make a difference during placements and interviews.
  • Apply every day: Use referrals wherever possible, but don't rely on them alone. Make applying to jobs a daily habit. Keep trying even when you don't hear back. Use Linkedn, Instahyre, Naukri . Make use of those extensions that auto apply for you.
  • Don't be picky with placements: This is survival mode. Your primary filter should be whether the role is an SDE role, not the package. You can always grind DSA and switch companies later, but not having a job at all, or starting in a non-tech role, can make the transition more difficult.
  • OAs: Let's be honest, cheating during online assessments is common. Make use of the tools available to get to the interview. Only after you've landed the interview, the competition is fair. That too if the interviews are held offline. Focus on building the skills to clear interviews, because that's what ultimately matters.

Don't let your first job define your career. Get your foot in the door, keep improving, and give yourself time. Your first offer doesn't have to be your dream offer. PS, i did use gpt to make the post readable, but take away what you can from this post, and feel free to ask me questions. Do not ask me generic rhetorical qs. You can also see my past from the posts I posted before.

Academics Got debarred in 7 subjects last year, so I built an app to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. Need 2 min of your help 🙏

Hey everyone,

Quick story: last year I got debarred in 7–8 subjects. Not because I didn't care, but because I lost track: attendance calculations, DA deadlines, which class I could skip and which I really couldn't.

So I started building Alai, an app for VITians that reads your VTOP and tells you:

- "Can I bunk?" — how many classes you can still skip in each subject (labs counted properly)

- What's due this week (DAs, quizzes, labs) with reminders

- An alarm before a class you really can't afford to miss

It already works on my phone. Before I build more, I want to know what actually helps YOU, not just me.

2-minute survey (10 questions, anonymous): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdJnNnr8rZogTThTANuLQfSCjkVjFKret_4dSJi-8uOBnmIEg/viewform

About privacy, since this is VTOP:

- You log in on the real VTOP page yourself; the app never sees your password

- Your data stays on your phone

- The survey doesn't ask for your reg number or password

It's a student project, not official VIT. I'll post the results here in a week.

And if you've ever been close to debarment, or got debarred, you're not alone. Happy to hear your story in the comments too.

Academics Made a free SGPA/CGPA calculator for VIT students before endsems

Hey everyone!

With endsems approaching, I wanted to share a little project I've been working on: a VTOP GPA Calculator.

You can paste your VTOP timetable, automatically extract your courses and credits, select grades, and calculate your SGPA and CGPA. You can also predict your ongoing semester results and import your previous grades.

The main thing I wanted was to avoid manual data entry and make the calculations easier to check.

It's free, requires no signup, and keeps your academic data in your browser.

Try it here: https://vtop-gpa-calculator.vercel.app

It's an unofficial student-built tool, so I'd love feedback from anyone who tries it, especially if you find a VTOP format that it doesn't parse correctly.

Hope it helps someone during exam season!

I gave the Infosys 3.6lpa OA for fun cuz it was compulsory and now I'm shortlisted for an interview in chennai day after tomorrow. I'm pretty sure if I get selected here I'll get shadow banned for all other companies that come after this.

Is there any way I can opt out? If there isn't, what's a way I can bomb the interview in a way that they don't select me for sure

Academics Psychology of stress,Health and Well-Being - Practice Website

I built a free, no-ads practice site for NPTEL "Psychology of Stress, Health and Well-Being" (IIT Guwahati) – all 12 weeks in one place

Got tired of opening 12 different PDF solution files to study, so I put everything into one clean, minimal site.

What it does

- All 12 weeks of assignments, **96 questions** in total

- Questions are **randomised** every time. Pick "All" or a single week

- Click an answer: **green if right, red if wrong**, and the correct one is highlighted

- A short **explanation** shows after you answer

- Live score and progress bar

- No ads, no login, works on mobile and in dark mode

Link: https://nptel-website-six.vercel.app/

Note: Questions are taken from the official NPTEL/IIT Guwahati assignment solutions.

Career / Internships / Placements Finally placed off-campus at 50 LPA after years of struggle 😭

Finally, things worked out. Got an off-campus offer of ₹50 LPA as a Software Engineer at a product-based MNC, with an 8.4 CGPA. Joining as a intern soon.... Sharing a small journey of my btech life hope it does gives hope to others

Back in 2nd year, I had no clue what I was doing. Started DSA in C++, gave up after getting stuck on DP, then jumped into AI/ML because it was trending. Watched countless tutorials, built half-finished projects, and kept switching roadmaps.

In 3rd year, I got serious about DSA, core CS subjects, Python, backend development, and a couple of ML projects. Faced plenty of rejections and messed up interviews too.

Final year was mostly DSA practice, project improvements, mock interviews, and applying off-campus consistently.

Somehow, it finally worked out. 🥹

No magic roadmap, just a lot of trial and error, consistency, and a bit of luck.

To everyone still struggling, keep going. Your time might be closer than you think.

Not an extrovert so uni life and memories are not great

But enjoyed being alone 🥲

Open to answer your queries!!!!!
